I'm just passing along the news, please try not to get hostile. I think I'm in a good place, no confirmed cases in my town and we're small and close knit enough to weather this thing fairly well, but a closure of this scope is unprecedented in my lifetime you know. I'm honestly pretty worried, even though I'm fairly confident I'm gonna be fine.

There's a Chinese family who run a local fish and chips shop, I'm worried about them. I went to TAFE with a Muslim Lady who runs a restaurant with her husband. They'll be getting stimulus money most likely, but how soon will it come in? How will it affect their lives? What's the mental health impact going to look like at the end of this?

Supermarkets, petrol stations, freight, banks, hospitals etc. - they're staying open. But the retail sector for non-essential things like clothes, electronic goods etc. are going to be closed for a possible 6 months or longer. So are restaurants and gathering places like pubs, clubs, halls, and cinemas. The decision came down about an hour ago from the PM.

The full details haven't been hashed out yet, and we'll have more information within 48 hours. But right now, it looks like a lot of places are going to be shutting down by noon tomorrow.

I don't know if you've read past my post before I edited it, so I'm gonna leave the edit in a new post. Please understand that I'm not trying to make you even more upset, as hard as the information might be - I just think that this is worth seeing in regards to your situation. Please take the time to read and process it, if you haven't already.

I only read the OP, but I assume the question has been raised regarding whether you'll be able to stay with her until the end. Here's the thing - for those 15 years of life, or however long you've had your dog, you have been that dog's entire world. If you're not there when it passes, it will look around for you and wonder where you are. Your dog will die not knowing what's going on or where you are.

Being there for that will be so tough. But you owe it to your dog to be there and comfort it as it passes on. Its last sensation in this world will be your voice, or your touch, and it will pass peacefully knowing you're there. Please, be there for your dog when they need your presence most.

No it doesn't.

The enemy traps are designed to surprise you and overwhelm you. The tone of the game feels like you're starting from nothing, and slowly building an arsenal of weapons to take on bigger and harder threats. If you're playing the game in episodes, rather than playing it as one long campaign from start to finish, you start off with a pistol three times and have to build your way back up each time - facing increasingly more overwhelming odds just to stay alive. Not to mention the dark rooms full of enemies and labyrinthine level design in places.

Doom 1 feels much more atmospheric in places, where you have to inch forward a step at a time in fear of being swamped by a hidden compartment full of enemies kicking your shit in, or coming face to face with a swarm of enemies you can't realistically handle. Yes, it's fast and it's action packed. No, it's not as intentionally atmospheric as System Shock. But elements of Doom 1 can be seen as espousing the basic tenets of survival horror, whereas Doom 2 goes balls-deep on the action front in comparison.

MrMallard

Without good teachers, the populace grows stagnant and societal decay really starts to set in.

Conservaturds say that gay marriage is where the degradation of society begins, but it's when the teachers fall below par and a majority of the population becomes shitty and uneducated that society really starts to go down the tubes. Essential skills and a passion for learning get thrown out, because everyone's too stupid and entitled to make an actual effort in their lives.

MrMallard
03/19/20 11:58:32 PM

I think it might have been. Queen feels like they have a more solid grip on pop culture than Elton John, but Bohemian Rhapsody is basically the crowning example of a formulaic, by-the-numbers biopic in a genre that had already boiled the formula down to a science. On top of that, the whole Mr. Bad Guy arc of the movie painted a dead man as a coked-up waste who would have only fallen to pieces and destroyed himself years earlier without the band, which I thought was incredibly self-serving and disrespectful.

Maybe I'm not as up to date with the band's history as I could be, but with the movie depicting Freddie Mercury telling the band that he had AIDS a good 2 or so years before he would test positive for HIV, and with that absolutely wank scene of Live Aid's donations increasing by a million or two during Queen's set alone, I'm not so willing to trust Bohemian Rhapsody's timeline of events.

I haven't seen Rocketman, but from what I've heard - i.e. the artists actually fighting to keep risky subject material in the movie - it seems like a slightly more genuine product. At least, as genuine as you can get from a 100 million dollar budget jukebox biopic. If nothing else, I don't think the movie shoehorned in a fake character to tie into an old SNL skit, or actively dragged anyone's legacy through the mud.

Because there are dozens of phone manufacturers who use Android on their devices, but there's only one company that uses iOS. That's my guess - Apple can afford to keep prices high for their products because Apple products are considered to be status symbols, while you can shop around for Android phones with highly different specifications and features. So when last year's model gets outdated, companies reduce the price to offload stock so they can compete in a wider marketplace.

The worst part about taking the high road is that when you do eventually do stoop to someone's level, that same jackass is the first one to turn around and throw it in your face. It's like when someone's pushed and pushed by the one person who's trying to push them to he breaking point - and then the day finally comes, and the person who spent all that time pushing is the first one to cry foul. "So unprofessional, I can't believe you would treat someone like that, absolutely disgusting behavior!"

You can sit here saying "two wrongs don't make a right", but "ok boomer" didn't stem as a one-to-one comeback. Gen Y, millennial and Gen Z articles have been coming out for decades, and there's always this focus on participation trophies, reliance on technology and a perceived softness. That turned into an indictment of my generation's entitlement, which was then used to paint a broad picture of millennials in regards to low revenue reports in non-essential industries. It's been news article after news article, from the earlier Gen Y label through to millennials, and it had just started on the Gen Z label when "ok boomer" started making as big of a splash as it did.

There were a good three wrongs before any action was taken to combat it. I know this is a shitty troll thread, but it can't be boiled down to "oh well two wrongs don't make a right!" That's the same bullshit that sees bullies get away with the shit that they do for so long, only for their victims to get suspended the first time they fight back.

Eventually, when you take the low road too many times, the people who keep getting fucked over will stoop to your level and sock it to you in the same way. Suck it up, or get out of the way. You wanted to play these games, and now you're getting what you deserve.

Boomer picked up so much steam because of all the millennial shitflinging. There was a point where tons of headlines were coming out about millennials killing certain industries, complaining that they don't spend enough money, even though wages have stagnated for nearly 40 years and younger generations don't have the scratch to blow on useless bullshit like expensive cars or excessive cereal consumption.

The backlash against boorish older assholes came about because millennials were sick of being slagged off in headlines and thinkpieces. The media just loves to heap load after load of bullshit onto the newest generations - the Greatest Generation started doing it to the Baby Boomers, who did it to Generation X, who have basically worked with the Baby Boomers in their upper echelons to do the same thing to Millennials, Gen Y and Gen Z.

The backlash against Boomers didn't emerge in a vacuum. After the better half of a decade of print media pushing and poking and prodding at the younger generation for not being as successful as older ones, younger folks started using the same tactic on the old, stuck-in-their-way pricks who made a living talking about how they were all failures compared to the older generations. Millennials buying less cereal is cutting into Kellogg's bottom line, but that's rich coming from a generation of fairweather hippies who put on suits when they got sick of "fighting the power" when it was clear they stood to gain nothing from activism, and a generation defined by avarice, waste and the rise of white collar crime. In short - oh, millennials are so bad for the country? Gen Z are going to destroy multiple industries and tank the economy due to their low wages and supposed entitlement? Okay, boomer. Whatever you say, you stupid, irrelevant hypocrite fuck.

I beat the Spiderdemon in Doom 1, it took me about 10 hours to get there. Probably a few more, the Switch times are kinda bad so I can't get an approximate timeframe.

Seeing as Doom 2 seems to have done away with episodes and maps, I can't really gauge the length of the game. I'm hoping to have Doom 2 done by the end of the week, because the sooner I play 3 and get it over with, the better. That game is nearly 9gb, and I need to make room on my Switch for Animal Crossing.

Group A goes fucking bonkers over the coronavirus. They panic-buy everything - TP, frozen/tinned food, condoms, ammo, pasta, anything they can get their hands on in the event of quarantine.

Group B looks at the miles of empty shelves that Group A left in their mania. Their regular shopping has been interrupted by the mass outages caused by the first wave of reckless consumption. So when the shelves are restocked, they're buying up as much stock as they can to avoid missing out. They see their mass consumption as more noble than the coronavirus doomers, but their actions play into the ongoing shortages and panic and create more "noble-minded" mass shoppers who are worried about missing out.

Group C can't get to the store in time. They work long hours, and maybe they have a boatload of kids. The commute to go shopping might be upwards of 15 minutes just to get to the store - and that's on top of the long hours they work. These people are almost always the people who need these supplies the most, and it could be argued that they might be the most at risk of contracting the virus due to chronic exhaustion lowering their immune system, or being around multiple vectors of disease like children or germy surfaces.

Because the panic-buyers of Group A and the "won't miss out again" crowd of Group B are stripping the shelves clean, Group C are shit out of luck. Best case scenario, they can get that smooth tube pasta that people seem to be leaving behind (unless that's just an Italy thing). Worst case scenario, these people actually do run out of TP and food, and conditions get so bad they're not able to get their hands on some.

And it's Group C who are the most vulnerable to Group D - the dregs of Group A and B who bought all this shit up, just to sell it for disgusting prices online instead of out of any actual fucking need.

The panic buyers create more panic buyers, because their excessive consumption breeds the fear of more panic-buying related shortages in those who otherwise see no reason to hoard so much shit. While well intentioned, they play into the shortages along with the panic-buyers, leaving the truly needing consumers without essential supplies. Those people are them forced to turn to scalpers to get their essential supplies, which empowers those scalpers to keep mass-buying essential supplies and sell them for disgusting prices.

All of that stems from stupid fucking doomers who are worried that they're not going to have enough toilet paper for a maximum of two weeks.

I should have expected some conservatism in the country/folk scene post-9/11, but I've been vibing hard on Brandi Carlile lately and the only other folky sort of band I would listen to is Counting Crows who've always been pretty politically left. That and the Mountain Goats, which is more of a mixed bag, but which definitely has some folky influence.

I got recommended this song called She Don't Like Roses by Christine Kane on Spotify, and while it's a basic ditty with a pretty sound, I really got my hooks into it. Eventually I found myself on YouTube, and I clicked onto one of her live tracks.

Her preamble was an observational story about liberals criticising the president at the time - Bush - then making a joke about someone's "One People" bumper sticker - "they say one people, but they leave us out of it! Crazy, isn't it? Maybe just a little bit hypocritical?". Then after the song she goes on this dumb tangent about tie-dye hippie types she saw at a festival once.

Ultimately it wasn't too bad what she was saying, the discourse has grown way beyond the old "Bush-bashing" pearl-clutching and that last story was a bit silly but not really that pointed. But it jarred so hard with the mood of the song, and it put me in a weird mood during the song. It's a very pretty song, it inspires positive feelings, but for about a minute before she starts playing she's complaining about liberals.

Again, it's probably that I'm spoiled in my selection of artists that make country/folky sorts of music - I just wasn't expecting the singer to make a "wow, how about those liberals, huh?" comment before singing a song about falling in love.

But I thought back to that post-9/11 landscape, and in hindsight it makes a lot of sense. I mean, the Dixie Chicks got blacklisted for speaking out against the Iraq War - of course the country scene is going to veer towards conservatism around that time period.

In recent years I've been vibing more and more on that classic, pure country sound. Not bro country, not that "plant a boot in the terrorist's ass" sludge that falls back on basic nationalism - stuff like Return of the Grievous Angel, or a lot of Brandi Carlile's current stuff. My pool is kind of limited, but I also dig a lot of bands with folky influences like Counting Crows, the Mountain Goats and arguably the Weepies and the Weakerthans in places. It didn't even occur to me how conservative that scene might be in places, because I lucked out with some of the more left-leaning artists in that sphere of influence.

Like I said, it wasn't even that bad - just a bit jarring. But it made me appreciate the music I've already found, and it gave me a little bit more perspective on something I hadn't really thought about. The song is still very pretty, give it a listen if you want.
