Biggest problem with the Years contest is it ignored system releases.

yep the SNES being part of 1991 was the biggest reason I took it over 1994 and it never showed up in any match pics augh

pretty sure I could've finished on the final leaderboard if that match comes through for me and 1997 doesn't get jobbed in an epic fashion the likes of which we've rarely seen

In terms of critical reception, TLJ was incredibly well received.

It was the fan reception that was divisive.

Rivals was bad. It was nice to see Squall/Seifer make a deep run, I guess, but there wasn't much of note there.

My main memory of Rivals other than the Trainers was yoblazer getting eliminated from the Guru on literally the second day of the contest because he took Jill/Nemesis over Kirby/Meta Knight!

what a chalky bracket

I wouldn't even put Years above Rivalry Rumble. At least RR had the Pokemon Trainers as a memorable run (similar to Zelda in 2018, honestly), even if the best match of the contest technically didn't even count!

2015 was a really solid contest even if you completely throw the Undertale stuff out!

I get that the Undertale stuff is hard to completely ignore and soured people on the overall experience, but it was fun for the most part.

Crono has faced Link 1-on-1 and in 4-ways and didn't seem to get all that affected by him. He's faced Cloud 1-on-1 and in 4-ways and didn't seem to get all that affected by him. Heck, Crono made it to the final in 2008 because Mario and Samus LFF'd each other to death! CT has faced multiple Square and Nintendo games and nothing out of the ordinary happened.

I don't know what qualifies as a "true test" then because it's not like we haven't seen CT and its characters in a million matches!

Yeah, I think Games 2004 has to be Starcraft. It only had one uninteresting match in the whole contest, and that was 53% on Kingdom Hearts.

CT is a solid runner-up for running the Mario gauntlet, the wire-to-wire classic against LttP, and actually managing to lead FFVII for an hour or so after VII didn't even struggle with OoT.

I think you're selling Squall a bit short. His match against Jill was considered a toss-up because he only got 35% on Snake in 2002, and he 60/40'd her. People were hyping Luigi to be Mario level, so very few people were giving him a chance, and Squall 60/40'd him, too. I think the fact that his strength came utterly out of nowhere when we saw Cloud, Seph, and Crono be strong in 2002 is what makes him stand out that year.

But either way, I'd put Cloud 1st and Sephy 2nd. One of my favorite stats of all-time is comparing Sephiroth/Mega Man from 2002 and 2003. The 2003 match got 26,835 more votes than the 2002 match, and Mega Man's vote total across those two matches increased by...28.

Well, the 2002 field was pretty bad! There aren't a lot of candidates outside of the Noble Nine.

Scorpion is the obvious dark horse choice if you want a non-Noble Niner, and I'm not sure who else would even be in contention. He'd be like a 4th or 5th place finisher if you did actual voting though!

I feel there's a good argument for Link as MVP in the first contest considering we didn't know anything that first year and Mario was the overall favorite. Link was a 2 seed, literally the only time he hasn't been a 1 seed.

Link is like MJ or LeBron in that you can give it to him every contest he's eligible for (except for 2007 and 2013, I guess), but we'll look for a reason to give it to someone else. I guess it depends on what you value in giving the MVP award to people. Link very rarely has exciting matches except when he loses.

I think Mega Man deserves some consideration for back-to-back 90% performances and fighting Sephy tooth and nail.

This yeah. I get the feeling most people who like TLJ are people who either don't watch many movies or people who watch lots of movies. It's probably primarily people who really got immersed in the lore of Star Wars who hate these new movies so much, and I can't blame them.

Rise of Skywalker is I swear the most cookie-cutter modern blockbuster ever. The fact it has an RT score above 50% is honestly quite something, since it seems like something that would have been destroyed by critics.
