My other topic I just made about the Oompa Loompa songs inspired me to make this poll. In the original 1971 film, the four naughty kids each had some memorable lines. Which one is your favorite?

Apparently the original song was going to focus more on her poor manners; and in fact, even in the final version the Oompa Loompa song for her ends with "given good manners, you will go far." But I guess they figured they would go right to the point, since her gum-chewing was pretty much her defining characteristic.

Good start, but I feel it's missing the black comedy aspect of the songs

Hmm, good point. The original songs have a bit of a shameful tone ("What are you at, getting terribly fat?" and "What do you get from a glut of TV? A pain in the neck and an IQ of three!")

The only original song that sort of commiserates with the child is, oddly enough, Veruca Salt. It puts the blame more on her parents than her.

In the original 1971 film, the Oompa Loompas sang about vices that were the undoing of the naughty children. Gluttony, being spoiled, etc.

Each song consisted primarily of a five-line stanza in an aabbc rhyming scheme, plus the "doompa dee doo" embellishments. I thought it could be interesting to come up with some Oompa Loompa songs that might be in the movie if it were made nowadays. My first thought for an updated vice: social media addiction. Here we go...

Oompa Loompa doompa dee doo
I've got another puzzle for you
Oompa Loompa doompa dah dee
If you are wise you'll listen to me
What do you get when you stare at your phone
Do you have friends or are you alone
Why don't you try calling them to talk
Or you could join them on a nice walk
Then you'll really be friends!
Oompa Loompa doompa dee dah
If you are social you will go far
You will live in happiness, too
Like the Oompa Loompa doompa dee doo!

Part of the issue here is semantics. If you verbally asked someone "What is negative four squared?" that question implies, or is typically interpreted as, what mathematically would be symbolized as (-4)^2.

That's not -4^2.

16. A negative number is its own entity. The idea that the answer is -16 exists simply because we dont have a special symbol to indicate negative numbers and instead borrow an operations symbol. This can create issues so something like -4^2 is treated a 0-4^2 just so that the - is always an operations symbol and not actually part of a number.

Again

(-4)^2 = 16
-4^2 = -16

You can Google this shit if you want. It is what it is.

Since there are no parentheses its safe to assume you mean -4 x -4 which is 16.

The lack of parentheses around (-4) means exponentiation is conducted first: ergo, 4^2 is carried out, then the negative multiplicative identity is carried out. So it's -16.

Bought a 3-pound pack of thick-sliced applewood-smoked hickory bacon, a two-pound bag of dark brown sugar and a bottle of butter-flavored maple syrup.

Mix all the brown sugar and most of the syrup bottle together in a pitcher, along with about half a cup of water to loosen it up.

Then lay some of the bacon strips in an aluminum baking pan until they cover the bottom, then drown them in the sugar syrup mixture; lay more bacon strips, drown them; more strips, drown them, until all the bacon and syrup mixture is used up.

Put in the oven at 300 for a couple hours; then remove the bacon strips from their pool of syrupy goodness, and put them back in the oven for about 20 minutes to further caramelize.

So good.

For instance, something like socioeconomic philosophy or advanced mathematical concepts require actual critical thought to comprehend; raw memorization won't be very helpful.

Whereas something like capitals of the world's nations, abbreviations of the chemical elements, etc., pretty much necessitate rote memorization because it's just raw data.

I'm trying to make a list and study those things. Any suggestions?

It refers to the fact that the 762nd to the 767th digits of pi are all 9s.

Mathematicians regard it as odd that an irrational number like pi with a seemingly random endless string of digits would have "999999" (or any string of six consecutive identical numbers) in a row, especially so early (relatively speaking) in the decimal expansion.

Belmod never "controlled" Jiren. And the way Belmod was talking during the Tournament of Power, even he (Belmod) knows that Jiren would beat him in a fight. Belmod himself said "Jiren is a being who will never lose. No matter who he's up against."

The reason why Jiren respects Belmod's position as the GoD is probably just that: Belmod is a god, and Jiren doesn't want that position of being the destroyer. He's a warrior of justice.

Frieza withstood the Hakai attack of both Sidra (an actual GoD) and Toppo (a quasi in-training GoD). If he can survive that, then Jiren -- who absolutely rofflestomps Frieza -- can certainly withstand Beerus's Hakai, IMO.

Josiah_Is_Back
02/21/20 12:29:31 AM

I think Anton Chigurh's apparent mortality was an intentional device to further reinforce his characterization as the personification of fate. He's not invincible, and that's the point. As he tells Llewelyn's wife at the end: "I got here the same way the coin did." He is subject to the same vagaries of chance as everybody else, but it is perhaps his acknowledgement of this fact and his complete acceptance of it (even embracing it as his own raison d'etre) that allows him to survive time and time again.

A lot of it also has to do with perception. Remember at the end when he tells the boy with the bicycle "take the money... and you never saw anything. I was already gone." Anton thrives on the reputation and mystique he has built for himself. Even if he knows he's mortal, that doesn't matter as long as others look at him as a ghost, or an unkillable force. Which then reflects back at us, the viewers: how do we perceive Anton? And is our perception accurate, or merely the byproduct of the story presented to us by the Coen Brothers?
