I'm rather awed that Modern Times, easily my favorite Tramp movie, somehow had blatant cocaine use in 1936.

The best part is that it's an especially hilarious scene. Modern Times is one of my most-rewatched films, and this scene always brightens my mood.

I concur that it's the best Tramp film. It's my favorite of Chaplin's films in general too. For a while, I preferred The Gold Rush, but Modern Times feels more purposeful and refined overall.

I don't think City Lights would crack my Chaplin top five. I'd for sure take Modern Times, The Gold Rush, Monsieur Verdoux and The Circus over it. I probably prefer The Kid slightly, as well. City Lights is still quite good - Chaplin's filmography is just that stacked!

I haven't done this, but I do have three Family Videos near me and I occasionally make the rounds to see what they have for sale. The movie and previous-gen video game deals can be stellar.

In the process, though, I've observed that people keeping their rentals is a common issue. I distinctly remember visiting my three FVs when Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver first began shooting up in value. Sure enough, the copies of both versions at all three stores oh-so-mysteriously vanished around the same time. My reaction:

https://vevmo.com/sites/default/files/interesting-miranda-cosgrove_0.jpg

If you're thinking "Someone might have bought 'em" - You could be right, but getting Family Video to (willingly) part with anything Pokemon or Mario is like pulling out teeth.

Link's Grandma - Mid Fodder. I see this joke going over about as well as Matt the Mii... but at least better than Sandal, or something?

Guybrush Threepwood - Low Fodder. I can't see him ever making a bracket again at this point. If he did, he'd get stomped even harder than his previous appearances. I think he's a great character, but too much time has passed since his heyday and he has little "apathy vote" appeal.

Tracer - Mid Fodder. I think she can beat the worst of the worst - like Guybrush - through sheer recognizability. But overall, GameFAQs took to Overwatch about as well as a college kid takes to decaf coffee, and I can't see her winning against most of the pack.

The myth that there's no way to read tone through text is flawed. Tone isn't conveyed solely through vocal inflection. Word choice remains the most powerful piece of how we communicate.

I fully agree - context clues don't just fly out the window once people begin talking online.

This is why the hardcore Poe's Law sticklers make me distinctly uncomfortable. It feels like they're trying to standardize and alter online communication in a way that just... dumbs it down, really, and makes it feel even less human.

Basically everything is against the tos here, all the rules are vague and essentially come down to the mods arbitrary decisions.

Think about the type of person you need to be to actively want to be a GameFAQs moderator in 2019

While particularly relevant to GameFAQs, since this site truly is an oddball relic now, this statement is dead-on and can also apply to Internet moderators in general. Power-tripping moderators - and the brown-nosers who think their overbearing moderation is totally justified and cool, ackshually - have ruined so many things on the Internet.

That's why I recently came back here after years of absence. Board 8 is pretty damn lucky compared to many other online communities, as far as moderation goes.

TheCodeisBosco
06/18/19 12:05:05 AM
#4
Roy: High Fodder. Fire Emblem gets a lot of flak from Super Smash Bros. fans. Roy isn't impacted quite as much thanks to Melee nostalgia and being included in the roster before the "too many FE characters"/"too many swordsmen" complaints began pouring in. But at the end of the day, he's a clone fighter, Marth's inferior and someone whose game was never even released in the States. I expect him to be weaker than Ike, who looked like ass last year.

Homer Simpson - Low Midcarder. As far as fictional characters go, I think Homer would do pretty damn well for himself. Nostalgia for The Simpsons has been at a fever pitch these past few years, and while Simpsons video games have a chequered past, several of them are regarded fondly: the arcade game, Hit & Run, Road Rage and The Simpsons Game.

Ecco: Mid Fodder. I concur with MetalmindStats here. Ecco's status as a cute animal and semi-recognized Genesis relic should allow it to at least beat the worst of the worst - Monokuma, Hat Kid and the like - without too much trouble.
