Even as video games have become increasingly mainstream, I feel like the term "gamer" is still pretty loaded. /r/gamersriseup is Exhibit A - that shit spread like wildfire. I definitely avoid calling myself one for reasons similar to yours - I don't want to invite any stereotyping or negative assumptions.

That having been said, I don't judge people who call themselves gamers, and very few I've actually met fit the "WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY - BOTTOM TEXT" mold.

Banjo is by far the best DLC addition in the series. This includes Smash 4 DLC. His trailer is one hell of a Rareware love letter too.

A DQ rep was pretty much inevitable. The constant Erdrick talk reminded me of the persistent Incineroar rumors, and we saw what happened there. I think having the alts instead of just Erdrick made for a more surprising and interesting addition, though. I won't buy Hero, but I see the appeal and respect the effort.

We're finally getting a mainline Pokemon title on a console, after two decades of fan demand. And it's this. Honestly, this gen looks so fucking subpar and uninteresting in literally every aspect. I get that bloat had to catch up with the series at some point, but do we really have to pull this shit for the first console - and $60 - title?

To be fair, though, I was pleasantly surprised with Let's Go despite how bad it looked pre-release. Hopefully Sword/Shield will be the same way?

I've warmed up to the idea of playable Steve because of how legendary the "Creepy Steve" memes became.

I also think Steve would be much more well-received moving forward, since A) The Microsoft rep that core Smash fans actually wanted made it in, and B) Minecraft became nostalgic/cool again this year, similar to what happened with Pokemon circa '09-'10.

For sure! Longtime Smash fans have been hoping for B-K, accompanied by Spiral Mountain... and we got it! We actually got both specifically! Beautiful.

I understand the reasoning behind the more casual-oriented picks like Isabelle and Incineroar. They made perfect sense to include, even if I don't give a toss about them personally. But man, it's amazing to see the longtime Smash/Nintendo fans get such a big win like this.

Goomba - Low Midcarder. I really, really wish Goomba made the field back when joke characters were at their peak. I've always wondered how it would do. Nowadays, Goomba would have more of an uphill battle, but I think it still has enough novelty value and recognizability to waddle past the fodder line.

Diablo - High Fodder. His best days are far gone, but I still think he has enough apathy/recognition vote potential to beat much of the fodder crowd.

CATS - Low Fodder. Memes were so simple and earnest back then... I miss the 2000s Internet. And CATS. But let's face it, he'd get curbstomped by anyone except Neptune or something.

Galeem - Low Fodder. I expect Galeem to be noticeably weaker than Master Hand, or even Tabuu. World of Light left a much smaller impact than Subspace Emissary, and at least Hand has nostalgia in its favor. Galeem also wouldn't exactly have a pic advantage...

Kyle Hyde - Low Fodder. I adore Hotel Dusk. It's arguably the best game on the DS. But its sales were miniscule and a lot of time has passed since its release. Kyle might benefit from a match pic, though, since his character design and art style are superb and eye-catching.

Diddy Kong - Fodder Line. K. Rool impressed last year, and Donkey Kong looked downright sterling, but I doubt Diddy can do much. His initial Character Battle appearance was really bad, and he's just not a character people seem to feel strongly about.

I've met quite a few people who love Joe Dirt. I've always written it off because, as you said, it seemed like the usual Happy Madison style that lands with a thud for me.

A console -even a console/handheld hybrid- getting a mainline Pokemon game is monumental. Many people have been pining for this for two decades, or close to it. No matter how safe Game Freak and The Pokemon Company play it, it's still going to be a huge release and sell by the truckload.

...so of course, they're playing it as safe as possible, from the looks of these trailers. This was 100% expected by everyone, but it's still hard to be excited for, y'know?

The last few gens of Pokemon (and Let's Go) have gone on sale far more often than the earlier gens. I'm willing to pay a $30-40 sale price for this, because - holy shit, Pokemon on a CONSOLE! But I just can't justify full-price for this series anymore.
