sonic 2 and sonic mania and even cd (as flawed as it is) have the best kind of open level design: it's pretty dense and full of content, but the layered design means that you can almost always fluidly and easily go from one path to another, making discovering routes and playing around with mechanics and physics easy and safe

i don't know how you can enjoy diet sonic and slow sonic but not gamma, who at least had an actually good narrative and gameplay that didn't overstay its welcome

the samey aesthetic is unexcusable though, as good as the gameplay may be

gamma's an excellent character but he would be really weird to come back
with shadow you can at least say "well, he's not really dead" but gamma (the bird) was reunited with his family and there's no really good reason for him to be stuffed into a robot again

as a generic robot model it could work (gamma was playable in sonic shuffle, and a similar-looking robot model was used in battle) but having gamma himself come back would be odd

it's weird how people are still so apprehensive about lgbt+ people being in literally anything ever
"queerness" has to be some sort of secret that you can only uncover in some obscure side event, so people can happily pretend it's not actually there, lest it be "too obvious" or be "too big a deal"

it had a million different hack writers trying a million different dumb things

writing is mostly good but the art style, simple character designs, and animation are notably lackluster
they have the gall to throw in a canned transformation sequence (as padding, obviously) despite it not actually being very impressive, like they're trying to show off their animation at its bestwhich is still not very good
when it tries to be funny it can fail pretty badly and sometimes it's kinda fillery

i don't like normal skittles as much as i like sour and bubblegum skittles

puzzles in the older tales games were never good
people really overstate how much "better" the older dungeons actually were

the early 3d tales games had some amazingly stupid cutscenes, though
the combat may not be nearly as fluid and varied as in later games, but there's just a special magic to the crappy voice acting, bad scripting, and pathetic action sequences

they probably just consider it part of the charm by this point

the game was really easy so the bad controls and learning curve weren't that big of an issue
the level design is just not very well suited for racing and is much better as a place for "explore and still make first place" challenges

people don't like hearing about how other people have it easier, are more successful, or are more skilled
