Except that one of those things was a series of actual, serious crimes, while the other is a guy kneeling down for a minute or so each game while a bunch of fragile republicans get their panties in a knot over somebody making a political statement they don't like. Equivocating them like that is pretty disingenuous. You can say that it isn't really a relevant thing to bring up because the other guy's already done his time and repented, but you really, really shouldn't even try to put them on the same level.

Portable devices have to be bigger or heavier to compensate because if you think about it, the constant recharging is going to wear it out fast.

And then the customer has to buy either a replacement battery or a new device, which is perfectly fine from the perspective of the people developing and selling the devices. Toss in that being smaller and lighter generally makes the devices much more usable for as long as the battery lasts, and that those batteries are still going to be good for a few years of normal use (about as long as people expect their portable devices to last), and there really isn't much incentive to put bulkier batteries in there.

That does make comparing them commercially less valid, since the Holiday Special was never expected to do as well as proper movies, but it's still part of the franchise, and it's still a notorious flop. I'll give them "commercial flop," but in terms of actual quality, I highly doubt Solo was anywhere close to that bad (though I haven't actually seen Solo yet).

I remember how surreal it seemed when I heard about it ending that shit like that was still around. It sounded like something that should have been gone by the 1950s, and instead it was still around in the fucking 1990s.

I'm assuming that's why so many people are thinking that it's something that happened a long time ago - because the idea of a racial ethno-state seems like something straight out of the 1800s, not something whose demise is younger than the internet.

A similar thing happens with Canada's residential schools. It's easy to think of them being this really bad thing that happened some time in the distant past, and to downplay the impacts accordingly, but the last one only closed in 1996, and the program was still very much in effect when most of our parents were growing up. It's very much still fresh, especially considering how much of the harm arising from cultural genocide like that is inter-generational.

I think it can be a lot of different things. Like yeah, I could make a whole cake for about the same price that they charge for a cake. But that also means I have to actually make it. Or I can try to make something they sell at the restaurant, but I have to make it. And there is no guarantee that it will taste as good. Or good at all if it's not something I make often. So, convenience and time spent and taste can definitely all be factors. Like, I know I'm good at cooking some stuff. But probably pretty bad at others. My mom's a great cook. But everyone has stuff they are good at cooking and bad at cooking. Plus, it nice to not have to cook. We still go out as a family to a restaurant when I go home at least once. I think it really depends on the person when justifying going out to a restaurant... I forgot. Also, portion sizes. I could make a whole cake, but maybe I was just in the mode for a slice. Now I have a whole cake I have to either eat, or share with someone to eat, or it goes to waste. That can happen with certain food products, too. Especially if you're not use to cooking a smaller amount. I rarely cook small amount of certain foods because I usually cook it for bigger groups. But it could be a little difficult cooking a smaller portion, depending on the food... Or finding the right amount...

Oh yeah, there are still plenty of reasons to go out to eat. The "it's tastier than anything I could make" attitude just seems weird to me, because making restaurant-quality meals at home seems so normal.

To be fair, I'm not sure the numbers were certain when he said that. Now, saying something so definite just because the numbers haven't been confirmed is pretty dumb, but I'd be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and only mock him for that instead of for thinking 13<4.

Being the world's largest producer of guns actually makes it easier, since you can cut it off at the source. Well, easier from a logistics standpoint, at least. The arms industry has an awful lot of money that it rather enjoys using to influence legislation and keep feeding the populace the NRA's propaganda, making it decidedly less easy to get the government to act on the issue.

My point is if you remove guns, they'll use knives, hammers, rocks, arrows to the knee, etc., to commit the act of violence.

And then their victims will spend a couple weeks recovering from their injuries in hospital and go on with the lives that they still have.

That's not to say that you can't lethally attack somebody with any of those things, since you can lethally attack somebody with a toothpick if you know what you're doing, but guns are far more lethal than most alternative weapons would be. There's more to the issue than just guns, absolutely, but anyone suggesting that the availability of guns in the US isn't contributing significantly to its homicide rate is either clueless or in denial.

To my knowledge, nobody has ever suffered any sort of health consequences from not saying "ma'am" that are comparable to those associated with not breathing. At worst, you might get a case of OCD or a similar disorder where not saying it results in a panic attack, but in that case that justification would have been presented and probably accepted before this became an issue.

It's a pretty arbitrary thing to punish a kid over, but if somebody tells you they don't want to be called something and you keep calling them that (beyond reasonable forgetfulness), you're pretty clearly being a dick. I'd say it's a bit of an overreaction, but not an unreasonable lesson to teach a kid.

Breakfast is usually cereal, sometimes with fruit or something on the side, but other than that pretty much every meal is home-cooked to some extent or another. This week we alternated between cashew chicken over vermicelli and stuffed portobello caps for dinners, and while we're out of the mushrooms now, we're going to use the leftover sauce for pasta for at least one more meal.

This is an attitude that always seems weird to me, because I grew up with a mother who could cook quite well. Going out to a restaurant to eat just meant different food and the fun/convenience of going out, not anything inherently tastier than I'd have if she cooked. I've kept that up cooking for myself, too, and most meals are something just as good as I'd get in a restaurant, usually much cheaper. In particular, I find it very hard to justify paying for restaurant desserts knowing full well that I could make that entire cake for less than what they charge for a slice. Going out can still be fun, but it's never a matter of looking for something better than I could make myself, just of having something tasty that I can't/won't make at home.

Years ago, I was in Minneapolis and had lunch with my girlfriend and her mother, who worked for General Mills at the time, at Dairy Queen. I remember having onion rings with my burger; then getting violently ill afterwards to where they had to take me home. It was years before I could bring myself to have onion rings again, even from a restaurant that wasn't Dairy Queen. I will NEVER eat Dairy Queen's hot food; rarely will I even come close to getting an ice cream or blizzard from them because of my experience.

Most food poisoning takes 2-3 days to kick in. It's very rarely the last thing you ate that makes you sick; odds are you were sick already and incorrectly attributed it to DQ.

This is no different than seeing multiple doctors to treat the same injury. No matter how many you see, the amount of injury they treat can't exceed the injury you have.

It is different, though, in that insurance uses money as an intermediate representation of fixing the problem. You could hypothetically be paid repair costs multiple times, despite only actually needing one repair. Hence there are rules prohibiting it.

"Hitting back" is generally not the most sensible course of action, since pointless retaliation is, well, pointless, but if you're going for equality then there's more than just "you hit me so I'll hit you" to consider. If you hit them harder than they hit you, then your response is not equal, and you can't claim to be acting on egalitarian principles.
