10 y/o Tamarion Wilson, a 5th grade student at North East Carolina Prepartory School in North Carolina was PUNISHED after he kept calling his teacher MA'AM" repeatedly in class after she asked him not to out of "respect"!!

So he was forced to write out MA'AM repeatedly during class as punishment!

His mom, Teretha was shocked when he returned home from the public charter school with the sheet of paper.

The teacher warned the class not to call her "ma'am" although the reason for the prohibition is not clear. The term is sometimes reserved for MARRIED WOMAN or those presumed old enough to have children but in many parts of the South, it is used for woman of all ages.

He was hospitalized last month for a seizure that included hallucinations and memory loss as the teacher was not aware of this. Teresa said the teacher said if she had something to throw at him, she WOULD!!.

The teacher has been there for several years and admitted in a parent conference that she would throw something at him as a joke.

Now Teresa and Bryant, the father said want their son placed in another class and it was granted by the principal.

They raised their children to address their elders as "sir" or "ma'am" as Bryant said "As a father, to feel kind of responsible for that..kknowing that i have been raising him and doing the best i can, it's not acceptable"

Do you ever call men and women "Sir" and "Ma'am"?

Totally came into this thread expecting the teacher to be a trans man. Instead, I'm just confused. Isn't that how students are supposed to address their teachers who are women? Like even the relatively young and hip teachers were still ma'am and sir.

It was "Sir"or "miss" for me back at school if we didn't want to use the teachers last name all the time. Hell even now such as at the bank or whatever the worker called me "Mr *insert last name here* and I have no issue at all with it. It seems some folk just want to be offended these days.

Usually it was title (Miss or Mrs) + name. Otherwise, you just called them teacher. Sir and Ma'am kinda sounds like some boarding school shit.

To my knowledge, nobody has ever suffered any sort of health consequences from not saying "ma'am" that are comparable to those associated with not breathing. At worst, you might get a case of OCD or a similar disorder where not saying it results in a panic attack, but in that case that justification would have been presented and probably accepted before this became an issue.

It's a pretty arbitrary thing to punish a kid over, but if somebody tells you they don't want to be called something and you keep calling them that (beyond reasonable forgetfulness), you're pretty clearly being a dick. I'd say it's a bit of an overreaction, but not an unreasonable lesson to teach a kid.

Because those things are in any way comparable and because teachers have jurisdiction over a child's breathing.

Used to use sir and ma'am a lot in retail when dealing with anyone, whether it be on the floor or at the register. Sometimes people would say they're too young to be called sir/ma'am but whatever. 99% of people never gave a shit. Teacher is definitely on crack.

Respectful is calling people what they want to be called, not adhering rigidly to a name that the person doesn't want because it's arbitrarily been deemed the most polite. It's good to have a baseline that most people can be expected to be fine with, and to consistently make an effort to follow it, but if somebody doesn't like being called "ma'am," calling her that stops being respectful.

If she's somebody you see on a regular basis, and you let her know that you're not a fan of being called "love"? Yes, it is disrespectful for her to disregard your feelings on the matter and keep doing so. Good intentions don't mean a thing if you ignore how your audience feels about what you're doing.
