Out of curiosity, I did the math, and 76% of the US population is contained in only 20 states, or 40% of them (compared to 3/13=23% of Canadian provinces/territories). If we look at the top 23% of states (11 or 12), they comprise 57-60% of the US population. That's also without counting US territories, which isn't necessarily a proper comparison because Canadian territories are being counted, but the numbers get more complicated if I start doing that.

To be honest I don't ask every food establishment I eat in "hey are you happy cooking this?" before I order.

It's almost like there's some degree of middle ground between being completely inconsiderate of workers and personally asking them if they're going to be annoyed or upset by everything you do. Obviously you don't have to take it extremes; I said "if you know you'll make them unhappy," not "if you haven't checked to see how they're going to feel about it." You know full well that workers are going to be annoyed if you sit down and order five minutes before closing, regardless of what the establishment's rules say. Ergo, choosing to do so means you are choosing to annoy them, and the establishment's rules don't change that that's what you're doing (unless you're really so clueless as to not realize what you're doing, in which case... that's what you're doing and now you know).

Does that mean you should never visit a restaurant near closing no matter what? Of course not. They are open that late, however annoying it may be, and sometimes that's the only time you can make it in. Just try to be considerate about it. If you can avoid it, try to. If you can't, try to make it easier for them, like ordering quickly, picking something that you expect will be simpler to make, and not paying in cash when they've already counted the tills. And tip well.

DocDelicious posted...
You're being paid to be there. Do your job.

Let's take that attitude to its logical extreme, and see if it holds up. Say there's a restaurant with a policy that they'll stay open past their posted closing time until they go 15 minutes without getting an order. Workers will still be paid full wages and even overtime for that full time, but they are expected to stay until the place closes no matter what their shift was scheduled to be. Knowing this, you organize a 120 people to call in orders at 10-minute intervals, starting five minutes before they close. This results in an additional 20 hours being added to their shifts.

Would you not, in this scenario, be an asshole (along with everyone who participated)? Would the workers not be entitled to complain about this steady stream of orders that resulted in them working obscenely long hours, despite getting paid quite reasonably for the time? Obviously, that's a stupid policy that probably violates a number of labour laws, so it's unlikely to continue after this particular incident draws attention to it, but the focus is on your decision to orchestrate these orders that so extended the shifts. Can you claim to be a reasonable, considerate person if you do this?

Quite simply, getting paid to do a job doesn't mean you can't complain about that job. That's an absolutely ridiculous attitude to take. There are reasonable limits on how much complaining is justifiable, certainly, but complaining about a customer who willfully makes the job worse is well within those limits. You know full well that most people in food service would rather go home at the scheduled end of their shift (which is often quite late, if they're closing) than make an extra 15 minutes' wages. Don't be that guy.

Considering how most humans who wind up on Hell's side turn into horrific abominations (like the Rogue player character from the first game becoming the Act I boss "Blood Raven" in Diablo II), you'd probably have to have radically different mechanics for each side, and you couldn't just palette-swap normal classes with either "good" or "evil" versions.

And that would take far more effort and cost more than they're willing to commit to on a game these days (even games with morality systems are rarely willing to do must to differentiate both sides), so I doubt you're ever going to see it.

If they did, I imagine they'd sell it as two games, possibly with one being available as discounted DLC if you own the other (like Nintendo did with FE14). It'd be a lot of work, but I don't see that being an issue provided they can come up with a model that can make it profitable.

For that matter, I've had normal sushi where the rice was still a little above room temperature. I was a little put off at first, but it actually tasted really good because that was a good fit for how the rice was seasoned. The temperature of food affects which of your taste buds are more active, and therefore how the food tastes. Ice cream's a really obvious example of this, because being cold reduces the activity of sweet taste buds. As such, while it tastes fine cold, once it gets warm, it often ends up tasting too sweet.

My apartment's currently set up to have a single HDMI cord running to the TV that I swap between the WiiU and Switch as needed. As it stands, I use the WiiU for Netflix, but it'd be kind of nice to not have to swap the cable back and forth. Beyond that, given my lack of a smartphone, it'd be nice to have it available for portable use, since it's more convenient than a laptop in that regard.

In practice, I personally wouldn't end up using it all that much, but there's definitely reason to want Netflix on the Switch. I understand Netflix dragging their heels on developing the app when the Switch was new, given that there was no guarantee it would be successful enough to be worth the effort (especially after the WiiU), but it's done a good enough job so far that they should get on that.

Zeus posted...
Oh look, *another* thing it doesn't need. After Sony discontinued Linux support, I think I used an internet browser on my ps3 a total of zero times. Likewise, the Wii had some sort of a browser I barely used because, honestly, what's the point?

I used the browser on the WiiU on a number of occasions to look stuff up for the games I was playing. For something like Monster Hunter that has a lot of external resources to reference, it saved me having to have a laptop setup nearby, or run between rooms to use my desktop. Already I can say that would have been handy on the Switch for Xenoblade 2, to say nothing of using it as a general-purpose browser while out and about.

Does it *need* it? Of course not. It's a game system, all it *needs* is to play games. However, other conveniences are, well, convenient, and these are extra functions that have been standard on consoles for over a decade. It's really not unreasonable to expect that they get a browser out, nor to want them to do so.

Nintendo and Blizzard didn't arbitrarily revoke games. Updating WoW is not destroying people's games, people just get butthurt that their FotM class gets nerfed. Making digital purchases system-based instead of having a proper account system to allow transfers between systems was a dumb move on Nintendo's part, but it wasn't arbitrarily revoking them. And PT was just one more reason Konami's so universally hated by the gaming community now, so that exists as a cautionary tale against any other company doing the same.

-Accept that you also consider operating systems to be malware (in which case we laugh at you and then also sob a little because Windows 10)
-Explain - using solid, well-reasoned logic - how operating systems do not in fact fit your definition
-Amend your definition to be less broad and vague and apologize for being so arrogantly confident of something so silly

Of course not, because it'd be highly impractical (especially where you're so paranoid as to cloister yourself away like you do) and do more harm than good with the bad press it'd generate (also true of digital), but they are legally entitled to it.

You've defined malware (as you see it). By stating a definition, you are applying the label of "malware" to anything which fits that definition. Ergo, in your eyes, a number of OS's can qualify as malware.

Of course being the first to deliver the infection if I saw 'Steam required' on the box I wouldn't know what that meant.

In which case it's your own fault for not heeding the "warning." Nobody sneaked anything onto your system, you just didn't pay attention. Probably clicked blindly through the installer, too.

DPsx7 posted...
Yeah it's no secret Steam is a large reason why I despise digital releases today. Physical lets me control the gate, nobody else.

We've been over this. If a publisher wanted to stop you from playing a copy of their game, owning a physical copy wouldn't protect you from that. It's easier with digital, yes, but in practice that'd just mean you'd be slapped with a lawsuit if you continued to play the game, rather than being able to revoke access directly. It is no less illegal to distribute copies of a physical game than it is a digital one. Digital's just easier to enforce.

DPsx7 posted...
I never wanted anything running in the background when I was gaming, no matter how little resources it used. Rather than keep my PC top of the line I'd just turn down the settings if I got something more demanding. You shoulda saw me playing Doom 3 on my Win ME system. None of the enemies had any textures.

You explicitly said there was nothing wrong with your computer when people blamed your computer for your troubles with HL2. If you were barely scraping by the minimum requirements such that you didn't have the extra RAM needed to run Steam in the background, I think we can safely blame your computer for your problems.

DPsx7 posted...
No it doesn't. I distinctly recall the game being disabled because they were working on the lines. Broadband was new to the area at the time.

I couldn't tell you about 10+ years ago, but nowadays, offline mode is pretty seamless, even if you don't enable it before losing connection. If that was a problem, it's not anymore.

DPsx7 posted...
I know what it did, what it would continue to do, and wanted it gone. It left traces in the registry. Besides, it's not a terrible idea to clean out the system once in a while.

It isn't, but that's entirely ancillary to the claim that you had to wipe the drive to be rid of Steam. Saying that you "knew what it would continue to do" hardly qualifies as substantiating your claim.

DPsx7 posted...
Nah OS's are way easier to work with.

Irrelevant, your criteria could still be applied to them. That's cause to review your criteria, not double down on them and add explicit exceptions.

Communicates with a central server of some sort. In the case of malware (specifically spyware), that's for the purposes of relaying personal information from the victim of the infection to the entity that infected them. Pretty much any internet-connected program relays some sort of information from the client to the server, though, since that's just how they work, so that's kind of a ridiculously broad criterion.

That was your own decision made out of absurd paranoia, not a decision made after failing to remove it by normally uninstalling all associated processes.

So... you're 1 for 6 there, and even that's being pretty generous given that it sounds like you're just describing ordinary DRM restrictions. Heck, with criteria that vague, you could make a case for most operating systems being malware, and then we'd really get to laugh at you. You're arguing about something you know nothing about, then calling others - who have actual experience in the matter - ignorant for disagreeing with you. It really shouldn't surprise you that you're being laughed at.

In theory, but in practice it's fairly difficult for legislators with no experience in the field in question to legislate it properly. As such, unions exist to let workers drive that regulation instead of leaving it up to people that have no idea what they're talking about.

What were they expecting? The investigation after a young child dies is always very strict.

Tell that to all the times parents leave their kid in a car to cook to death and theyre not even charged because theyve already suffered enough.

I mean, if we're going with criminal charges and sentences as a means to deter them from ever committing the crime again, having a child die as a result of an honest mistake may well be more deterrent than a prison sentence could ever be. I think it largely boils down to how repentant the parents are as a consequence of their loss. There was a case in Alberta a couple years ago where a toddler died of meningitis after his parents tried treating him with naturopathic remedies instead of going to a doctor. That one ended up being controversial because it was challenging the parents' right to treat their child how they saw fit for what they believed was croup, ultimately boiling down to the fact that they had both a naturopath and a nurse friend tell them he needed to go to a hospital (at one point, he was so stiff that they had to drive him around on an air mattress because they couldn't get him into his car seat), and they disregarded that until it was too late (they took him to a hospital after they found him not breathing).

What swayed my opinion on that case was the fact that, rather than admitting fault, the parents are still denying any sort of wrongdoing. The father (who coincidentally has some degree of ownership a line of naturopathic products) spent his prescribed three months in jail, and they're still working to appeal the ruling (they were granted the appeal on the grounds that the jury didn't receive adequate instruction from the judge and there was too much medical jargon from the expert witnesses). Everything about their conduct says "I would do it again," which means their attitudes and behaviours need to be changed. There's a world of difference between that and somebody who is devastated by the loss of their child and will move heaven and earth to keep it from happening again.

Here, they don't exactly sound repentant. This also goes beyond carelessness because they chose to conceal what they knew was a medical problem. There's ample reason to expect that they will similarly neglect their other children, so a harsher penalty is warranted.

Not even once. If it wasn't them then I wouldn't have reached this conclusion. Customers, people who call phone support, anyone wandering the mall, telemarkers... There's also a growing list of turds here who need to be swept out to make room for more common sense.

You'd be able to find someplace else, right?

It sounds more like a list of anyone you don't like or anyone who doesn't agree with you. It doesn't really sound like it's them...

Argumentum ad populum is very weak arguing, but if everybody disagrees with you, that's usually a good sign that you should be taking a long, hard look at yourself.

whoa whoa whoa, hold on a sec. Steam link isn't cloud gaming(well, technically it is, but people mostly refer to cloud based gaming as playing games from on outside server), it's just streaming from your pc to whatever device you have your steam link on (or similar app).

It isn't, but it's a similar concept. Performance is very much going to depend on network speeds, so if your network isn't fast enough, you're gonna have problems. The difference arises in that Steam Link relies on ethernet speeds, whereas cloud gaming relies on internet.

I hope you're right. While the points all make sense I wouldn't put it past the s***tier companies (EA, Act, M$) to try anyway.

Oh, I'm sure they'll try. The game industry will try any bad idea at least once. Ultimately, though, it's just not going to work, and trying to push it after arriving at that very obvious outcome would be more idiotic than even they can be expected to do.

True enough, yeah. Streaming games doesn't work tremendously well for anything twitchy, unless the game isn't particularly demanding. Playing Rogue Legacy via a Steam Link was fine, but playing Dark Souls II didn't work at all. The concept of it being an "infection" is just laughable, though, hence I lol'd.

DPsx7 posted...
Infect is the word I wanted to use because this is something we can't allow to spread.

And that's laughable. Streaming games is never going to be more than an option for the vast majority of games. From a publisher perspective, digital distribution remains the superior option because it uses less of their bandwidth and computing power. From a consumer perspective, it's only ever going to be at all useful for those with a weaker system, and only then for games with relaxed timing. I'm sure some publisher will try making a streaming-only action game, but that's just not going to work at all and the game will flop too badly to inform anyone else's policy. Don't be so ridiculously paranoid.

I'm glad they stopped that. They weren't even putting warning labels on the stuff. There were pictures and videos of Indian workers unloading and handling asbestos with no protection whatsoever. While it's not entirely our responsibility to get them to wear PPE, the fact that Harper's government was so willing to say nothing about its risks was just disgusting.

Real question: Is asbestos more effective than contemporary products?

For some things. These days, with all the regulations around it, it's probably not cost-effective anymore, but the reason it ended up in bloody everything was because it was an extremely versatile and useful substance, as well as being pretty cheap.
