Sometimes even different sects within those religions don't agree. Basically, the three interpretations are like this; - Satan is a prisoner in hell. He was put there because of his pride. - Satan is the king of hell, who rebelled against god and now has free reign over Hell (and sometimes Earth). - Satan is simply an agent of God. He's just doing what he is supposed to. What is important to remember, though, is that in the first two, Satan actually hates humanity for supplanting him in the eyes of God. In some versions, it's his refusal to bow down to humanity that's the breaking point. In the latter interpretation, he is God's employee and his job is to punish humans, and by all accounts, he is pretty good at his job. Either way, I can't think of any interpretation where Satan actually likes wicked people. He just uses them to prove his point and try and spite God. this about sums it up honestly. it can get more complicated and nuanced than this, but this is a decent enough summary. I may be mis-remembering on that one, though. this is one of those potential nuances. you are right, some folks hold them as two separate beings. or even still, Satan is a title or rank. and Lucifer is his name. Some even think Lucifer really isn't Satan given the meaning of the name. I'm not so sure about that one though, as I can't think of any way to reconcile that with any Christian doctrine. But I am okay within Christian doctrine calling Satan the rank title and Lucifer his actual name.
