Why people willingly choose to live somewhere that you need to earn six figures to be considered not in poverty has always confused me but then again I've never tried it out myself. Maybe the pros of living there outweigh the cons of how much it costs. Most people cannot just up and move. You also compromise a lot to live in the less expensive areas of the U.S. In the more rural, less modernized areas you sacrifice food, culture, niche friends (like an astronomy club or D&D club), conveniences, entertainment, better job opportunities, etc. Those things aren't a big deal to everyone, but to a lot of people they are. Some of us have families & obligations & what not this is always a laughable response. I did. Went to a place I had pretty much never been to an area where I definitely had never been. Got some jobs lived in small apartments and less than a few years later buying a house.
