It's not necessarily laziness, anime tends to intentionally cut corners to get the most out of their budget. Often they just use the general pale human template without putting any defining racial characteristics unless the story specifically calls for it, like in the Sword of the Stranger example.

She's not allowed to play a trans character either. That role must go to one of the many avaialble trans actors like...um...Chaz Bono or....Chaz...Bonoooo.

(Sidenote, Chaz actually is a very capable actor who's roles have surprised me with how well he delivered.)

Or you know..... get a casting director who you know.... does casting calls and reaches out to find some?

And how's that working out? Has the lead been recast or have they said fuck it?

God knows, but the guy made no efforts and it's been clear as day she was recasted because he liked her work with GITS.

Honestly I think it just comes down to laziness/cheapness in that most of the time they just don't care enough to try and differentiate between races outside of hair color

The Japanese are naturally tan-yellowish/lite-brown/pale-white, so the issue would arise by assuming that Japanese only come in one color.

Yeah that's why I put cheapness in there. Here's a picture from that same anime of Hannibal from Carthage and Nobunaga

anime tends to darken the skin the males a little bit and the females tend to be lighter which fits with japanese beauty standards where pale women are seen are more attractive.

or at least thats what i've been told explains that trend in anime.

also straight up drawing their character yellow would be living playing into a self racism. at least by drawing them whiteish they get it close enough and keeps it homogenous which fits their culture.

2018 and people still don't get how turning a white character black is good because it adds representation but turning a black character white is bad because it takes away representation.

context is everything. not everything is a double standard. sometimes one way is fine but the other way isn't. that's just how it goes.

This excuse (which is all it is) would work alot better if black people weren't already over represented in media. If you were actually interested in being fair, you'd be promoting a Hispanic or Asian lead. Since they actually are underrepresented.

Did you post this dumb shit with a straight face

Percentage of population:

Black or African American 40,241,818 - 12.6%

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_the_United_States

Distribution of roles for cable scripted shows in the United States in the 2015-2016 season, by ethnicity

Black 13.3%

https://www.statista.com/topics/3342/minorities-in-media/

You can shut up now.

Man, you really dont think before you post the dumbest shit, do you? Simply amazing

Because no one is worse then anime fans when it comes to adaptations. Come on there are plenty of anime fans who refuse to watch any anime dubbed and think all dubs suck even when they haven't seen one in over a decade. Of course they would hate it if an Asian anime character was played by a white woman.

Adding reprensation by taking it away doesn't count.
If you say context is everything, then perspective moderates that context.

Rarely are there justified complaints about adding or making new, fully fleshed out characters.

I don't think you understand; most characters, especially protagonists, are white. Adding more white people to counter black people is literally enforcing an unfair status quo.

At that point, should we enforce a form of "Affirmative Action" on character race representation?

What is this about a buffy reboot? Ironically, we know of more non-white slayers in the Buffyverse than we do white ones, so I don't necessarily have an issue here. Whiteness is not integral to the character of Buffy, unless we want to imply there is somehow less horror movie victim potential to exploit in the character being portrayed by a black woman, and there were be if the role went to a while actress. Surely, y'all know better than to go down that rabbit hole.

No. My objection is the idea of a Buffy reboot at all. That's straight trash. I no longer trust Whedon with that series. I don't care if he made it. It's not needed. most of the original is still just as relevant now as it was then. Somethings need to be left alone.

I honestly have no issue if they choose to have a new Black Female lead for BtVS. As long as they continue the lore / canon already established by Angel / BtVS.

It's already setup so that almost any female can be a Slayer.

They can literally have Sarah Michelle Geller be in a "Teacher" role for the next generation of Slayers.

And the new Generation can have a new young Female Lead.

its a damn shame too because that GiTS movie was amazing. fucking SJW weebs ruined it.

The gits movie was fucking awful and it had nothing to do with scarjo

I actually liked it. And considering she is a robot the race thing was a weird issue, especially since scarjo is easily the biggest action movie draw and there is no Asian actress close.

Wasn't aware being white was integral to her character.

Kind of. Joss made her a blonde white girl, because blonde white girls were always victims in horror movies, and he wanted to change that. But that works for black females too. So...

It would have been cool if he made Buffy Hindi or Turkish...or Egyptian.

Or with a proper continuation based on the existing lore, you can literally have an Academy full of different types of women of all backgrounds & ethnicities from around the world.

Cyborg, as in from DC? Yes, he has always been black, though I dont think its integral to his character at all.

Anyway, I like having a new slayer and black is no problem. I just wish she was a student of Buffys or something like that. She doesnt have to be a reboot, unless maybe the studio doesnt think they can grab peoples attentions with a different character name.

IF they followed the lore of the Buffy-verse, at the end of BtvS: Season 7.

Every women who could be a Slayer, would be a Slayer.

Ergo, literally thousands of women around the World became "Slayers".

They can literally focus on a new Black Female lead for "BtvS: The Next Generation"

sounds like a good answer to me. Should have been /topic
