I've never understood the problem with the ship map at all. Can someone explain the issue with it to me? (The one with walls in columns 2 and 5 I get.)

I have around 380 stamina potions. I generally only use them if there's a lot of stuff I feel like doing and/or I'm repeatedly retrying a GHB/etc. to refine my strategy. I don't really care about getting more than the final seal out of Tempest Trials; I never do more than three per day ever.

The thing with Mario is I think if he was still the dude who was average, but did so in a way where he had a bit less lifting and movement speed and a bit more jumping he would actually be worth using.

I think Toadstool and Luigi overkill the ease in jumping where even a player who is only slightly good at jumps might actually have an upgrade over the sluggish lifting speed of Luigi and Princess Toadstool, which does actually matter in a lot of places.

He's too close to the Toad end though so for me at least it's pretty much always like "well, why not just use Toad" cause yeah there's not a single jump in the game that I can recall that I can easily make with Mario that I can't easily make with Toad as well.

Mario can make 4-block-high jumps with a running start, something Toad (and Princess) can't do. Those come up a fair bit. It's also much easier for him to jump over Cobrats, for instance, which is notable because "desert stages" are a place where pickup speed matters a bit more than average.

On the other hand, where does Toad's speed actually matter, outside of speedruns? I honestly can't think of any coin collection Mario can't do. Mario's more than fast enough for Birdo. etc.

Aw nuts, I had assumed Armoured Boots wasn't locked to armoured units for some reason. (Didn't see any restriction in the TT description itself.) Oh well, anything that makes armours more useful is good I suppose.

Also I had zero trouble with Xander using horses, Titania sneaks in and ORKOs the lancer to start the fight and aggro everyone else; mine even has Distant Counter so the cleric dies too. I feel like other axe cavalry should work similarly? Other movement types don't have such an easy in for that square.

Edgeworth/Franziska had almost 63% of the total dialogue, and Franziska had twice as much as the three below her. So yeah, playable characters and assistants are going to slaughter this thing. I'm curious to see how the distribution changes for the mainline games. We're going to have three trial-only cases before we hit the first full-length case though.

I'm mostly interested to see what % of dialog the prosecutor has, since that's a dynamic absent in AAI. The judge too, for that matter.

Obviously main + assistant are gonna slaughter investigations though.

I love SMB1 since it basically got me into gaming, but its controls are... definitely weird if you're used to any 2D Mario since.

On-topic, Princess is generally the best overall pick for long jumps + control, but Luigi can pull off some specific useful high jumps (the most memorable of which is the warp in 5-3; other characters can get there with far more difficulty but Luigi makes it easy). If you really want to pick up a lot of things (desert digging or a few specific coin-farming locations) I'd go with Mario since he's at least a decent vertical jumper (can clear 4 blocks with a running jump). Toad's pathetic jumping makes him relatively painful to use on many stages (and the pickup speed advantage over Mario basically never matters), but he runs slightly faster than normal while carrying an item so if you're a speedrunner this matters.

I tend to do one quick AA run a week involving seven pre-built teams. I probably leave 400 feathers/week on the table by not super-optimising my first team for points so maybe one day I'll be unlazy and reconfigure all my teams so the highest-scoring four (including a blessing) are up first.

I got my Valentines Lilina fairly easily. I wish she was a better unit than she is considering normal Lilina isn't that good either. I think she really needs Gronnblade+ to be effective but it will be a very long time before I can get one for her.

Normal Lilina runs Triangle Adept Radurraven Swordbreaker very well. I don't even like the character much but I use her sometimes and find her quite effective, since she has the only stat a raven mage really needs. I feel like Lyon may have powercrept her a bit but Lilina does retain some advantages (especially if you get an attack boon).

I feel like you're underrating the Valentine's version too, she's now tied with Spring Camilla for highest attack on a cavalry/flying mage, so you can put that to the usual good use with either Triangle Adept Raven or Bladetome shenanigans. With the 5 threat range and easy access to powerful buffs, it's close to impossible for a cavalry mage to be not good (though Leo does try).

I've not run the numbers but that sounds right.

Shared colour is one of those things which a lot of people seem to think matters psychologically but it really hardly matters at all for your chance at getting them over time. Flipside, "how many units are on the banner" is a factor people often overlook but it is far more important, because 3%/4 is very different form 3%/3.

The salt surrounding Ayra sharing a colour with Eldigan made my inner statistician cringe.

Checking CYL, the most popular armour knight not yet in the game is actually Kellam but there's a joke to be made about that. The next most popular are Benny (this makes some sense) and Gillaim (which weirds me out; I'd have pegged him as one of the least popular SS characters). Oswin and Kjelle are modestly popular too. Gatrie doesn't seem to be (nor any of the other non-Zelgius Tellius armours). But yeah, none of them are particularly marketable.

Do armours actually make it harder to rank in the arena? The effect of BST on arena score is practically nothing these days. I don't really have a good sense of how volatile the scoring thresholds are, since for the past while I've been in a zone where it's easy to go from 19->20 but almost impossible for me to stay in 20. So they seem stable-ish to me but someone who is right at one of the cutoffs probably has a better sense!

Lana Skye also has the final testimony of the case, doesn't she? (Since blah blah Gant plot contrivances) Clearly the defendant having the last testimony is one of the marks of a bad case!

On average I'm not a huge fan of the defendant testifying. Such testimonies are often kinda awkward because the prosecutor should be the one cross-examining them (the defendant is generally gonna want to make himself/herself look good, potentially even lying to do so, and the prosecutor should be shooting those lies down), but that's never what AA does (which is justified gameplaywise, mind). Sometimes it absolutely works, though, like in 6-2.

I similarly know why Engarde couldn't testify, but it's a damn shame he doesn't. I can't help but feel that 2-4 would be even better if Engarde had a bit more screentime during the trial itself.

Isn't it an option in the menu?

I'm the opposite, DD and SoJ earn by infinite respect for letting me skip lines on a first playthrough (and yes, having a transcript you can check if you accidentally skip something you don't mean to).

oh and grats on the Rhajat. i also got her somewhat recently. it's nice being able to kill Blyn in one hit from range. i think that's the only character i have that can do that while she has Mulagir equipped.

Dunno which of these you have, but... Micaiah, almost any Brave Bow user, most keen Wolf tome users (need ~30 base atk), and TA Raven users with high Atk (need ~34 base atk) unless Lyn runs Cancel Affinity. I've occasionally seen people claim that some stat besides Atk is the most important one for Raven tome users. Anyone claiming that is incorrect, as Bow Lyn illustrates; TA lets you pull off OHKOs but only if your Atk is high.

I didn't draw from the original Hero Fest either. I dunno, Distant Counter is nice and all but the banner as a whole didn't really grab me then, and it would grab me less now as we've gotten better dancers + Takumi has fallen off even more. Actually I'm not sure I drew extensively from a any of the banners you call top five, aside from CYL. <.<

(If we don't count 6-5 as one case, then it's probably Edgeworth in E1-5 or E2-5, yeah. Interesting how it's probably not Phoenix regardless! I wonder what case he has the most lines in? 2-4? 1-5?)

Had a recent discussion on the subject of who the ten best NHL teams were overall since the 2004-05 lockout. Thought folks here might be interested.

Obviously how you score teams is subjective. Still, here's what I came up with. Order isn't too important, but I went and added one in anyway.

1. Pittsburgh: 3 Cups, 1 finals loss
2. Chicago: 3 Cups, 1 Presidents' Trophy
3. Detroit: 1 Cup, 1 finals loss, 2 Presidents' Trophies
4. Washington: 3 Presidents' Trophies
5. Los Angeles: 2 Cups
6. Boston: 1 Cup, 1 finals loss, 1 Presidents' Trophy
7. Vancouver: 1 finals loss, 2 Presidents' Trophies
8. Anaheim: 1 Cup
9. San Jose: 1 finals loss, 1 Presidents' Trophy
10. NY Rangers: 1 finals loss, 1 Presidents' Trophy

Pittsburgh and Chicago are obvious. They've won 3 Cups each and have the longest active playoff streaks (for now). It's honestly too bad that they never faced each other in a final. Detroit is only slightly less obvious, I feel; they were crazy dominant in the first few post-lockout years, with two Presidents' Trophies (and a third year where they lost the tiebreaker for it) in addition to the Cup and finals appearance. And their playoff streak is well-documented.

Teams that won a Stanley Cup aren't going to be contraversial for this list generally. I still excluded Carolina because they've been really bad since, only making the playoffs one other time. Otherwise, the rest should all make the list for sure. Los Angeles probably has the fewest points of any team on this list (and has made the playoffs the fewest times) but I can't argue with two Cups. Boston has a second finals appearance and a Presidents' Trophy. Anaheim doesn't have notable hardware besides one Cup, but their rate of making the playoffs is extremely good. (It's funny how the California team which has made the playoffs by far the least has had the most success in them.)

Washington having limited playoff success is obviously a bummer, but they've still won the Presidents' Trophy 3 times and have 4 division titles on top of that. IIRC they have one of the very highest point totals of any team post-lockout, though I dunno the up-to-date numbers.

Vancouver, New York, and San Jose have all had generally good records for most of the era (though a couple more years of the current Canucks will endanger this statement), and all have both won the Presidents' Trophy and made the Stanley Cup finals, so that's about as much as a team can accomplish without actually winning a championship.

Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Carolina (just for that one season), Philadelphia, and St. Louis all feel like honourable mentions but I think they're all clearly back of the top ten I listed. The weirdest team post-lockout has to be Buffalo; they were one of the very best teams for the first few post-lockout years and have been one of the very worst since.

I'm kinda skeptical Ema is in the top ten despite all her cases because it feels like she talks way less than the norm for a detective, and her AAI cameos are relatively brief. Have to think Franziska and/or Kay, who are significantly more important in their screentime, push her out.

Heavy Blade incorporates all active modifiers to combat, so I would think it's affected by Fire Boost. I know it's affected by Death Blow which is similar.

I felt most of AA3 was just a series of great performances by Phoenix. Only once does he go to trial and not secure a Not Guilty verdict within the day, and he has some pretty tough cases to fight his way out of! And of course in 3-2 day 1 he's so "good" he successfully argues a Not Guilty verdict for someone who doesn't deserve it.

Like yeah Godot isn't the strongest opponent but both the killers and the situations are, and Phoenix blasts them apart. The end where even Godot realises that Phoenix has become a great attorney kinda drives this home.

You're right about it being the least favourite and this never fails to weird me out. I felt like back when the games were new, SMB2 vs SMB3 was a real debate among people I knew and SMB1 was the one that was further back of the trio. (Fun fact: in grade... 4 I wanna say, I polled my grade on SMB2 vs SMB3 as a math project. I don't even remember which game won now, just that it was very close and somewhat divided along gender lines) I think SMB1 now gets a fair bit of credit for being such a formative game, while SMB2 took a real hit in its popularity when people figured out it wasn't a "real Mario" (sadly).

Players who won slams in the last decade other than the big 4

Stan Wawrinka - 3
Marin Cilic - 1
Juan Martin Del Potro - 1

Might be the most ridiculous stat in tennis. Literally 3 other winners in 40+ contested slams.

Never mind the last decade, it's actually the last 13 years now (Marat Safin, 2005 Australian). 52 slams, only 7 winners.

The crazy thing to me is how weak the generation after Delpo/Cilic/Murray/Djokovic is. All those players are born in 1988 or earlier (which yes, means they'll all be 30 by the year's end). I certainly have some hope for some of the younger players like Zverev, Chung, Shapovalov, Kyrgios if he gets things together, etc. But among people who are currently aged 24-28... man, that's an underwhelming group. It's entirely possible none of them ever win a slam. Raonic and Nishikori and Dimitrov are decent but they should not be the top players of that age range.

Compared to Raudrraven Sophia, Naglfar Lyon has +4 atk, +1 HP, +2 Spd, and +1 Res all in exchange for -2 Def. Even if you have an optimum boon for Sophia (i.e. Atk) she's still gonna lose Atk by 1 point. He's also cheaper to build (doesn't require sacrificing a 5* character). The only way Sophia has more potential is that she can be merged past +2, but that implies an extremely high investment in her which is only worth it if you really like her, because she's only so-so as a unit.

Basically, Lyon does the same thing as her but cheaper and slightly better. And yeah, has waaay better art (and is a significantly better as a character IMO, but milage may vary).

I'll probably upgrade him myself because somehow I actually only have three 5* red mages and one of them is a -Atk Leo (sigh), and I like his character+art a lot more than my current Raudrraven mage (Lilina).

No way is Ori as good as Metroid. You can make a case it does the exploration and platforming better - I'm pretty sure I disagree, but I can see it - but its combat is light-years worse. Metroid having fun combat really rounds it out as a complete package for me; I'm generally much less enamoured of Metroidvanias that don't. (or, why I can't really get behind the hype for SotN)

Disappointed I missed this until now; tag.

Zero Mission is a technically good game but never really grabbed me the way Super or Fusion did. The latter two are all-time favourites while ZM just came and went for me.

Ephidel?! Dude doesn't even fight(on screen)...

Hrm... I don't know why I imagined Linus with an axe when he wields both that and a sword in the fights with him(And he has a sword in this official art). Though him being an axe unit would round out the Four Fangs colorwise.

Ephidel's in more cutscenes than Linus (pretty sure, at least) and is quite good-looking if you're into that sort of guy (I've definitely seen fangirling over him).

Linus fights with a sword/axe in Four-Fanged Offence and again as a morph in the final battle, and uses a sword only (Runesword in Japan, Light Brand everywhere else) in Cog of Destiny. So yeah he's more sword than anything, for all that I agree that he should probably go axe if he ever makes Heroes just because we need more of those. (Obvious parallel with Raven.)

Linus had a Brave Sword and Tomahawk. tbh I'd probably just give him a Brave Sword (and maybe some unique skills) since he actually stood out for not having a special weapon in a battle where almost everyone else did!

Not that I really think Linus's chances of getting in any time soon are that great? In addition to Lloyd and Ursula, he finished well behind Limstella, Sonia, and Ephidel in the first CYL (and we know IntSys pays attention to that). The only FE7 villain he finished above was... Nergal. Ha!

MM7 has pretty uninspired boss designs (gameplaywise) and stage designs too IMO, but yeah, the cramped style doesn't work for Mega Man. Or many platformers really; it's why Super Mario Land 2 falls flat too.

I'm not really a big Sonic fan so I'll leave the defence of his games to someone else!

I mean, the title itself is in homage to Julius, so it's extremely NOT weird.

I dunno that I agree with that! It's at least as much a homage to Augustus, who was the one who actually became emperor of Rome and ruled for decades, pretty much establishing the Roman Empire. It became a title because it was the family name of the first five emperors.

In an alternate reality where Marc Anthony becomes the first emperor of Rome instead, there's no way the name Caesar catches on as a title.

The Australian Open finals weekend being terrible for my sleep is a proud tradition!

I have a hard time watching sports anything but live. It just loses something when I know that I can look up the results. I guess it's no different than watching a movie but my brain handles it differently for some reason.

Also: I only caught the final set of Kerber vs. Halep but it was pretty damn great. Definitely a finals-tier match IMO. That's the kind of match Halep needs to win to be a grand slam champ (a nail-biter after both blowing two match points and being down two match points, against an opponent playing quality tennis), and I'm pleasantly surprised she pulled it off.

I certainly think she's better than Wozniacki on paper but quite ready to be proven wrong if that's the way it goes. And if Halep does lose, it'll be to one of the few players who's as due for a GS title as she is.

I know it's only two games, but how am I the first person to mention Nier?

Oh well. Mega Man is certainly a worthy choice too.

... does Trails get better music after FC or something? Because I've only played FC and... yeah, mystified by any hype there.

I'm unfortunately not super well versed in exactly when Jesus began preaching, but I'm pretty sure Caesar was dead well before Jesus came onto the scene.

"Caesar" was a title used by many Roman emperors (and survived even into the 20th century as czar/kaiser), including Tiberius Caesar Augustus, who reigned for pretty much the entire period Jesus was active.

I think it's kinda interesting that when people say "Caesar" we tend to think of Julius. Blame Shakespeare.

Replacing Lotta with Larry makes perfect sense to me. It's crazy to think that Lotta had been in more cases than Larry at the end of AA2, the anime is merely fixing an egregious mistake. (Haven't actually seen the anime myself.)

Yep. Acro/Moe/Ben are all top tier case-specific characters in my book.

yeah, Nahyuta and Athena go together really well. those are both low tier lawyers in my book but I wouldn't hold that against 6-4. I think Athena's enthusiasm and Nahyuta's chill work well in contrast.

6-4 is probably the only case I actually kinda like Nahyuta in. "Let it go, and-" "NEVER!" is such a great moment. The rakugo bit is pretty damn funny, too (like has a similar bit in 6-2 with the burgers). I just wish those moments where Nahyuta did something unexpected weren't the only times the character did anything positive for me.

But yeah I'm all for 6-6 as one of the worst lawyer/prosecutor combos in the series, for all that I'd also mention 4-4. Klavier barely matters even when the killer is his brother, and Apollo barely matters because Phoenix is stealing the spotlight hard. But I'll freely admit I like throwing 4-4 under the boss at any opportunity!

Gaiden/Echoes getting #2 for story is the most baffling result to me.

And I like Echoes well enough for shaking things up (and having great art)! But that story is... very bad.
