Actually, yeah, there's a good chance Athena is higher than Mia just because DD and SoJ are so much bigger than the OT games, and many of Mia's appearances are brief.

Yep. Athena probably has the #1 most dialog in AA5 in particular (she's the only character with a major role in all six cases aside from the Judge, believe it or not), and that's a long game. AA6 she's not in nearly as much, but she still gets 6-4 as a player character, 6-2 as a partner, and a lot of dialog in 6-5 as well. That's still a big resume. She's definitely top 10.

I'd be really shocked if Gumshoe beat Maya. I guess there's AAI to consider but..

I know it seems surprising but actually think about it

None of Gumshoe's appearances are particularly brief. He takes the witness stand SIGNIFICANTLY more frequently than any other character in the series, he's in every case in the original trilogy except 1-1 and 3-1, and he's in every case in both AAI and AAI2 as well, interjecting a *lot* of dialog. Every time you talk to him it's a fairly long conversation, since he's dumping a lot of case details on you, and you almost always see him more than once every time you do see him. He is everywhere in this series. Maya talks more than Gumshoe in the cases she's in, but she's actually in FAR fewer of them, for the reasons I said (so many of the cases in which Maya is important, it's because she's gone).

I don't disagree - but Maya in a case of hers is 2-3x a Gumshoe case. I bet she doubles him in the OT. Gumshoe's also off running errands a lot so Kay can get some screen time.

The fastest way I can think of to keep track is to play in front of a keyboard and tap a letter for each line (doesn't have to correspond to the character, just use q for phoenix, w for edgeworth, e for maya, whatever), then do a count

Gumshoe's screentime is greatly reduced in AAI2 especially because of Kay.

Maya:

1-2 (defendant, court partner)
1-3 (partner)
1-4 (partner)
2-1 (court partner, briefly)
2-2 (defendant)
2-3 (partner)
2-4 (very brief)
3-2 (partner)
3-3 (partner)
3-5 (witness)
6-3 (defendant, court partner)
6-5 (witness)
6-6 (partner)

Gumshoe:

1-2 (detective, witness)
1-3 (detective)
1-4 (detective, witness)
1-5 (detective)
2-1 (witness)
2-2 (detective, witness)
2-3 (detective, witness)
2-4 (detective, witness)
3-2 (detective, witness)
3-3 (detective, witness)
3-4 (witness)
3-5 (detective)
4-4 (briefly a witness in 4-0)
E1-1 (partner)
E1-2 (partner for some of it)
E1-3 (he's around)
E1-4 (defendant/witness)
E1-5 (tags along for nearly all of it)
E2-1 (he's there but not for a lot of it)
E2-2 (tags along for nearly all of it)
E2-3 (pretty much always there in the future parts)
E2-4 (he's around)
E2-5 (around, although off doing his own thing for much of it)

I don't think this is clear cut - it may be that I'm overrating how much text he contributes to his appearances, especially the AAI games, but I also think you might be underrating it

he's pretty much bumming around in the entirety of AAI and those are long games

Only ten characters have 10+ appearances in the series:

1. Phoenix - 28
2. Judge - 28
3. Gumshoe - 23
4. Edgeworth - 20
5. Maya - 13
6. Apollo - 12
7. Trucy - 12
8. Ema - 12
9. Mia - 10
10. Athena - 10

And Franziska has 9, with Pearl and Kay at 8. I don't know that anyone else is in serious contention for top ten most lines beyond that other than maybe Blackquill just due to how big DD is.

Blackquill does talk a lot in his six cases, to the point where I think he probably beats out Pearl, but I doubt he's top ten even so.

I'm kinda skeptical Ema is in the top ten despite all her cases because it feels like she talks way less than the norm for a detective, and her AAI cameos are relatively brief. Have to think Franziska and/or Kay, who are significantly more important in their screentime, push her out.

She's there a lot in 1-5 but it's still only one case! Most of her other appearances are surprisingly light on lines IIRC, though my memory of AJ is a bit rusty at this point. I do remember thinking she got significantly less than Gumshoe per case though.

EDIT: For instance, is there any Ema case aside from 1-5 where she has as many lines as Franziska has in any of 2-2, 2-3, 3-5, E1-2, E1-4, or E1-5? I kinda doubt it. Kay probably has a similar list.

Haha, I might delve into them just for the heck of it since they're pretty short anyway.

regardless this would only be an estimate anyway because there's a decent chance I miss out on dialogue a bunch

actually I guess I need to save frequently and prepare myself to do a lot of soft resets and whatnot especially if I want to get all the wrong answer dialogue

There's a lot of questions about what does and does not count depending on how thorough you want to be - for instance, flashback textboxes, or textboxes that do not have a name associated but you know who's speaking

Shaky guess on 11-30 here. Didn't bother to order these, I'm just guessing who will crack the top 30

Mia Fey
Larry Butz
Winston Payne
Wendy Oldbag
Pearl Fey
Godot
Dahlia Hawthorne
Klavier Gavin
Shi-Long Lang
Calisto Yew
Justine Courtney
Sebastian Debeste
Gregory Edgeworth
Ray Shields
Simon Blackquill
Bobby Fulbright
Rayfa Padma Khura'in
Nahyuta Sahdmadhi
Dhurke Sahdmadhi
Datz Are'bal

I'm probably like, going to be wrong about some of these and some of the top 30 will be a random witness who only appears in one case but just talks a lot anyway (Adrian Andrews maybe since she's also in 3-2. I dunno whatever)

also depends on how you decide to separate Iris and Dahlia, have fun with that!

Yeah, what can I say? Like I said, this will probably take a long time because I'm already feeling like I can probably only handle an hour at most at a time and that hour will cover less ground than usual.

Although I think the AAI games will be the most difficult because of all the extra NPCs and the fact that you can move around on the screen instead of just pointing and clicking a background.
