21. Scarecrow Nightmare sequence in Arkham Asylum (22.5 points)
Nominated by: Axl_rose_85

Importance: 5.5
Fear: 7
Snake: 10

Scarecrow has always been the villain in the Batman franchise capable of bringing the Caped Crusader down to his knees, preying on the hero's deepest fears, dragging him through painful psychological torture. Rocksteady managed to bring this concept to the gaming world, and it still remains to me as some of the most incredible sequences I've ever had the honor of playing through. Though Batman: Arkham Asylum juggles an ensemble cast of villains with aplomb, the Scarecrow sequences are the ones that stick out in most players' minds. The asylum location already invokes a survival horror feeling, with dead guards often littering cramped hallways, as a myriad of locked doors and tight vent travel creates a sense of claustrophobia. When Scarecrow makes his debut in the game, this feeling of fear is intensified. I absolutely love how the game subtly transfers control to the mad Dr. Crane. The first sequence leads you in by having Batman coughing coupled with taunts from the Joker, proceeding to show asylum guards going insane from the toxin, heightening the danger. The second sequence slowly transforms a familiar location into Crime Alley as Batman relives his childhood. By the third sequence, Rocksteady goes full Eternal Darkness on the player, glitching and restarting your game from the beginning (probably every player's worst nightmare), but there are always clues to help you work out what's really going on. It's yet another way Rocksteady immerses you into the role of Batman. The sequences are genuinely frightening and off-putting thanks to their ability to break the normally unflappable Batman, and are narratively strong as both you and Batman will your way through the nightmares. By the end of the third nightmare, you feel like you yourself have overcome your fears thanks to Rocksteady's strong direction and commitment to gameplay through story (i.e.: having Batman in the real world surrounded by real thugs who are represented by skeletons in Scarecrow's world). I really can't praise these sequences enough; they are the pinnacle of the Arkham series and an amazing example of Batman's mythos demonstrated outside of the comic medium.

23. Dolls (22.5 points)
Nominated by: Bane_of_Despair
https://imgur.com/gallery/P0zx9

Importance: 9
Fear: 7.5
Snake: 6

Dolls are capable of scoring easy scares with audiences. As with wax museums, they represent a sort of uncanny valley where we can't really identify too closely with them. Dolls put a childhood spin on this concept. As children, our imaginations run wild with the capacity to make our dolls, stuffed animals, toys, etc., feel as alive as possible. Horror media that deals with dolls takes this imagination and takes it a step-further into the realm of nightmares. This is exemplified best in Child's Play, when a child's simple birthday gift is actually possessed with a real human soul, and not just any soul, the soul of a murderer and criminal. Annabelle from the Conjuring franchise is a more classical doll who becomes a conduit for a dangerous and violent demon whilst it is believed to be the soul of a young girl. The animated puppets in the Puppet Master series are brought to life with an Egyptian spell and made to serve their masters. Basically all doll films by nature are supernatural and it can be easy for these films to turn too hard into camp without trying too hard. Still, there's a reason so many are made. It's easy for the fear of dolls to stem from childhood. Maybe grandma had a few too many dolls with cracked heads or missing eyes, or ones that felt like they were watching your every step. We don't really think of them as dangerous, just off-putting. Doll movies give dolls the power to contain that danger, however. Like the spells and rituals usually found in these films, dolls in horror take something seen as innocent and childlike and gives us pause the next time we see a similar doll that bring memories of films like Child's Play and Annabelle rushing back to us.

24. Shaun of the Dead (22 points)
Nominated by: Xeybozn

Importance: 7.5
Fear: 4.5
Snake: 10

It's a film that hits the nail right on the head. The holy grail of satire, Shaun of the Dead dismantles the zombie genre whilst being a straightforward zombie film itself. By following the rules of genre conventions, Shaun of the Dead crafts a film that keeps its horror roots whilst making you laugh your butt off. Quite obviously, Shaun of the Dead portrays the human world as already being zombies before the infection even spreads. The same dead-end job, daily routine, it says a lot when Shaun goes through two different versions of his, one without zombies and one with the undead, and barely notices a thing. Shaun keeps this theme running throughout the film, as Shaun's masterplan for surviving the apocalypse is going to his favorite pub, and to other characters around him, it's like nothing has changed. That's really what Shaun of the Dead ultimately wants to get at. The zombies are really only a menial threat. SotD is more interested in commenting on human nature and keeping its characters grounded and realistic instead of grand zombie-slaying heroes. In a way, it's the most effective zombie film ever made, and it never even goes of its way to shock with gore or have jumpscares. It's just made with loving craft and a great eye for an excellent comedy.

25. Home (X-Files episode) (22 points)
Nominated by: Xeybozn

Importance: 5
Fear: 7.5
Snake: 9.5

Generally regraded as the scariest episode of The X-Files ever, Home was a groundbreaking moment for the series. The only episode to garner a TV-MA rating, Home was a brutal episode focusing on the Peacock family, a family of deformed farmers with a history of incest. It starts off with the burying of a sick, deformed baby and refuses to let up from there, with a house basically sealed off from the world that combines the worst features of the Sawyer's and Baker's house. It's an episode that explores family values and globalization in two different lights. The small Pennsylvanian town (literally named Home) exhibits classical nuclear family values despite being untouched by an increasingly modern world. Mulder himself desires the idyllic smalltown life. Meanwhile, the Peacock family, similarly untouched by the world, went through generations of depravity, inbreeding, and violence instead. Motherhood, a theme that plays really heavily in the X-Files mythology with Scully's own desire to be a mother, is twisted in the episode, exploring a mother's willingness to do anything for her sons. Mrs. Peacock's twisted offspring is even later echoed in the series when Scully becomes pregnant with a human/alien hybrid. Even beyond its heady themes, Home can be enjoyed as straight horror show as well; try not be shocked and terrified at Mrs. Peacock's quad-amputated body or the black humor of Wonderful! Wonderful! playing during a particularly violent scene. If you have to watch one episode of X-Files in your life, make this it.

Don't forget Jess from Triangle, who was her own final girl.

Yeah that's a great example!

Hey Snake, have you actually seen the movie The Final Girls? Been meaning to check it out for a while now

I actually haven't, been meaning to as well.

I don't know if Buffy should count as a final girl, but good write-up nonetheless.

While this is true in a sense, she's deliberately designed to be a subversion of the final girl. I think I've heard her described as the final girl if she was just as susceptible to vices whilst still being able to combat monsters.

The final girl trope is as common a horror trope as they come. Most famously associated with slashers (though it can definitely show up in other horror genres), the final girl is an important tool for the genre. It represents the finding of inner strength to overcome evil and turn the tides against the typically male killer. The final girl is usually pure and good, refusing to partake in the vices of her friends that leads to their deaths. She might even have a special connection to the killer, usually be family relationship. As written by Carol J. Clover in her book Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, the final girl is a way to shift audiences favor from the killer to the victims, with cathartic violence against perceived negatives (like alcohol, drugs & sex) shifting to empathy and a desire for good to triumph over evil. Films will even demonstrate this visually, as scenes shown from the slasher's perspective gradually phase out to show the final confrontations between the final girl and the killer. Many films subvert aspects of the trope. Friday the 13th features a female killer and thus the final girl in that film, Alice Hardy, feels unthreatened by the woman's motherly, innocent, and kind appearance. As this is not revealed until the final act, you would be forgiven to assume the killer up until that point was a man as was the norm at the time. Erin, in You're Next, is already a skilled survivalist and trap expert at the film's start, fighting back against home invaders with vigor, calmness, and strength from the get-go. In The VVItch, Thomasin gives in to the darkness that overcame her family. There are many ways in which the final girl trope can be used to tell a great story, whether you play it straight or twist and subvert it. It's a pivotal trope in the horror toolkit and I dare say even a necessity.
