https://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/yokai/images/6/66/292px-Yuko_Shimizu.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20140624032621

Fear: 6
Snake: 7.5

Perhaps one of the most well-known of the Japanese urban legends, thanks to widespread fame with the Pokemon Mawile and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, the Futakuchi-Onna is a legend that's a bit more fun than scary to me. I think it's sort of a "realistic" legend in a manner of speaking; a representation of the two-halves everyone has: a normal side, and a side that's different and secretive. In most Futakuchi-Onna stories, the truth isn't revealed until the very end of the story, and will usually involve a stingy miser looking to save money by bringing in a woman who rarely eats. However, the woman actually has a second mouth on the back of her head underneath her hair who eats twice as much as a normal woman would. It's a good creepy ending and a perfect "take that" to the greedy people out there. There's another much darker variation on the story where it is actually a curse afflicted on a evil mother who never feeds her stepdaughter enough food and thus she starves to death. This causes the mother's head to split open and causes her massive headaches and a never ending appetite as vengeance for her neglectfulness. Each variation is unique in their own ways but the primary message stays the same. Be generous, be kind, and maybe check under your loved one's hair if your food starts disappearing at double the rate.

33. The Shadow over Innsmouth (original story) (21 points)
Nominated by: trdl23
http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/soi.aspx

Importance: 6
Fear: 7.5
Snake: 7.5

Though disregarded in its time, The Shadow over Innsmouth's story of frog-men in a decrepit town remains one of the darkest and most tense horror novellas written by Lovecraft. With a protagonist modeled after Lovecraft's own personality, including personal fears of physical & mental illness, a penchant for cheap travel, and racism, Lovecraft pushes the boundaries of horror scene-setting and it's impossible to not feel literally transported to the world Lovecraft so carefully and tenderly builds. As with all Cthulhu Mythos stories, Innsmouth excels at making the reader feel so small and worthless in the grand scheme of things, as dread and uncertainty eventually envelope all aspects of the story. The escape from Innsmouth sequence will be one of the most frightening things you read all year, and it perfectly encapsulates Lovecraft at his best, when all his horror sensibilities are firing on all cylinders.

To me, IT is really stuck between made for adults and made for "kids" (I mean more like 10 & up) since there's a lot to its core that makes it similar 80s adventure or dark fantasy films that make it really relatable for that younger audience. Besides the opening and of all the things the Henry Bowers sub-plot, I don't think there's anything too bad that could make it too gruesome of an experience for a tween kid. I mean personally, I don't care about film ratings either way, but if I was looking at it from a general sense, that's my take.

34. Ash (Evil Dead) (21 points)
Nominated by: KokoroAkechi

Importance: 9
Fear: 5
Snake: 7

One of the biggest horror icons of all time, Ash is a rare example of a well-known icon who's a hero rather than a villain. Ash is an otherwise unremarkable man who slowly grows into the badass anti-hero we all know and love; before his boomstick, stump chainsaw, and one-liners defined his character, Ash was simply another supermarket employee, cowardly and even dim-witted. We all know now though that Ash was born to slay Deadites and he definitely wouldn't be near as well-remember as he is if not for his character growth in Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. The most extreme moments of insanity in the franchise really bring out Bruce Campbell's incredible talent for portraying a man pushed to the limits, and these are always the best moments for Ash. He's not really a character I call a personal favorite, but he's definitely enjoyable to watch.

Doesn't work too well for me outside the scene, as a track it's too minimalist to be a constant listen.

I definitely agree, that was probably their most botched finale easily and that's saying a lot. The main characters turned into near cardboard cut-outs and thankfully for Ally, Kai the super-genius planner and observer didn't realize his gun felt a little light there. And I got pretty sick of near every character having been involved in some kind of underhanded plan to explain everything away so it makes sense.

35. IT (2017) (21 points)
Nominated by: Corrik

Importance: 8
Fear: 6
Snake: 7

Unadjusted for inflation, IT is currently the highest-grossing horror film of all time. A simple film about children vs. a scary clown took the world by storm, and despite the original novel being released just over 30 years ago, 2017's IT is very much a product of its time and place. Thanks to the insane number of clown sightings seen last year, the clown has become just as ubiquitous as the zombie and is at the forefront of people's minds when they think of horror. With the concept of a scary clown being so real and tangible, IT was primed for success, and succeed it did. Pennywise was a prominent horror icon before, but now, he was the top dog. And it wasn't just the clown that made things as scary as they were. IT, of course, is fear incarnate.

The original IT miniseries is one of the first "films" I ever remember watching. I was 6 at the time, and it frightened the living hell out of me. That fantastic Tim Curry performance still gives me the chills when I watch the miniseries today, and I think it's a production that still holds up today as a chilling piece of horror fiction, one that's subdued and deliberately paced. It's always stuck out to me and I was skeptical when the remake was announced. I wasn't into the initial Pennywise design they showed off but the first trailer really shook up my expectations. It was exciting to become fearful of clowns all over again; and it was... good.

The children were great and the theme of facing your fears was explored quite compellingly. I was invested in their group and what would happen next, and Skarsgrd's Pennywise performance managed to thankfully differentiate itself from Curry's greatly. The film had great atmosphere and the town of Derry was fleshed-out and given a life of its own. Yet, it was still missing something. Aside from one or two scenes max, I was never really scared. There was of course that good old reliance on jump scares and when things got too over-exaggerated like with the violently shaking Pennywise head it just felt more goofy than scary. People will say Curry's more clown-like moments (https://youtu.be/wmjrqJcouIQ?t=1s) are the same thing, but for me, that just adds to the creepiness. You don't even really need anything more supernatural than that.

That's just my take on it anyway. Like I said, it was definitely a good film that told a good story and it wasn't without its flashes of horror brilliance when it remained subtle. Too often though, it lost focus on what makes IT actually scary in favor of shoving in popular modern horror elements to appease the crowd. Maybe Part 2 will buck some of those, but until then, I can't say I'm not looking forward to seeing more Pennywise grace the big screens again.
