27. Kuchisake-onna (Slit-mouthed Woman, Japanese urban legend) (22 points)
Nominated by: ihatethiscpu
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuchisake-onna
krBa3wC

Importance: 7
Fear: 7
Snake: 8

The last urban legend remaining on the list, Kuchisake-onna is yet another vengeful spirit from Japan and I think visually the creepiest one nominated. She was a woman mutilated by her husband, given a Glasgow smile with a samurai sword after she was caught cheating on him. She wears a scarf to cover her face, or in more recent retellings, a surgical mask. If you encounter her, she will ask you if you think she's pretty, and unfortunately no matter what you answer, it will end badly for you. Answering yes will cause her to give you the smile to resemble her, and answering no will cause to arrive at your home later in the night and murder you. She's a very proactive spirit, and I've read a few modern sightings where she chased children in South Korea which is pretty terrifying. Sightings have also famously caused hysteria in Nagasaki in 1979 which led to children having to be escorted home in groups. One of the best looks into the legend you can get is the film Carved, directed by Koji Shiraishi (of The Curse fame). An episode of Constantine also did the legend justice, and there are several other films, adaptations, and inspirations inspired by the legend, meaning Kuchisake-onna has quite the exposure and her horror will continue to live on as another resident of the high-volume Japanese urban legend canon.

I can definitely see The Babadook being one of the most iconic and defining horror monsters of the decade

I don't know if we'll ever see a sequel or anything like that but becoming the LGBT icon he is now has definitely helped give Babadook a second wind in becoming a true icon.

28. The Babadook (character/concept) (22 points)
Nominated by: jcgamer107

Importance: 6.5
Fear: 7.5
Snake: 8

"If it's in a word, or it's in a look, you can't get rid of the Babadook." The Babadook is one of the scariest new monsters entered into the horror canon, an analogue for mental illness, depression, anxiety, and grief trauma that pervades every aspect of the film of the same name. The film is capable of building a solid mythology around the monster without over-explaining anything, including a pop-up book that keeps showing up and a silent film style TV sequence that potentially shows the first summoning of the creature. Battling the Babadook is akin to going through the 5 Stages of Grief, as Amelia, the film's protagonist, grows increasingly depressed and anxious everyday since the death of her husband on the day she gave birth to her son. Her son, a noted "problem child", only makes her feelings even worse despite her best efforts to give her child love and attention. Though The Babadook may appear malicious, to overcome it means facing your problems and coming to terms with your grief. The Babadook may not even exist at all, at least not physically. Perhaps there's a Babadook inside all of us, pushing us to our breaking points and making us feel a fear that will only make us stronger in the end.

29. Thriller (music video) (22 points)
Nominated by: Great_Paul

Importance: 10
Fear: 5
Snake: 7

Easily one of the most legendary videos of all time, Michael Jackson's Thriller starts off as a genius short horror film with an amazingly well-done werewolf transformation scene (the make-up was done by Rick Baker, who worked on An American Werewolf in London). Jackson's initial "Get away!" with the first part of the transformation is actually really shocking and scary! It's followed by a tense chase through the woods, before cutting back to the real Michael Jackson in a movie theater with his girlfriend, watching the werewolf movie with his girlfriend, who leaves the film in disgust. Finally, the song starts getting going, and the lyrics describe a typical horror scene in a classic horror film, before narration from Vincent Price cuts in, as he describes a scene of zombies rising from the dead. They corner Jackson and his girlfriend, and the video gets a little goofy here as Jackson turns into a zombie and does the infamous dance with the group of killer zombies. It's so classic, and it's hard to not be amazed by the fun choreography and dance skill on display here. Thriller was a landmark music video, at a time when the music video format was still growing and fledgling. It didn't just change the game though; it set an astronomical benchmark for what the particular medium could do, and modern pop videos still try to match the theatrics, effort, and storytelling set by Michael Jackson's Thriller. With the video, it wasn't just about the song. It was about crafting a short film that could be enjoyed over and over again, and Thriller is 13 minutes of horror homage that's been a perfect mood setting for any Halloween party ever since.

Resolution, my favorite film of the decade so far. It's a pitch perfect deconstruction of horror films and storytelling in general, with an incredible slow-burn plot that unravels into one of the most spine-chilling mysteries I've seen played out in a film. And the lead actors are pretty great in it as well.

30. Audrey II (Little Shop of Horrors) (22 points)
Nominated by: PrinceKaro

Importance: 8
Fear: 7
Snake: 7

Don't let this charming, singing plant fool you; Audrey II is hungry, and the only thing to satisfy is more and more humans. When Seymour first buys the unassuming plant, it's initially a blessing in disguise, as the plant starts attracting customers to his flower shop on the verge of closing down. Yet, messing with the plant ended up being like taking a deal with the devil. The plant's demands blossom into murder, with the fame-hungry Seymour doing his bidding. Audrey II serves as a source of new-found strength for Seymour, but that strength is built upon greed, sin, jealousy, and vileness. And when Seymour tries to back off his relationship with the plant, that all comes back to bite him in the behind when Audrey II threatens Seymour's love interest, Audrey. It's easy to see why someone like Seymour could buy into the power Audrey II represents. It's in all of us to rise up in the world through whatever means necessary, and Audrey II's boisterous and charming personality could make anybody buy into what he's selling. Audrey II, through his big-wide grin and hunger for human meat, serves as a reminder that we must never take the easy way out of things, even if it means fame and fortune.

31. Perfect Blue (21 points)
Nominated by: JONALEON1

Importance: 5
Fear: 7
Snake: 9

A nasty film that studies the relationship we have between fiction and reality, and also takes a look at the dangers of stalking and the tolls that it takes on an individual, especially a celebrity who must really value their privacy. Directed by Satoshi Kon (you Paranoia Agent fans will obviously know that name), Perfect Blue doesn't shy away from excessive violence and fantastical scenes that show our main protagonist, Mima, who quit pop music to become an actress, going slowly insane from small, demeaning roles and a crazed stalker draining her sanity. And this is deep stalking we're talking about here. Every detail of Mima's life is scrutinized and recorded, and he apparently even murders the production crew of a film she's working on. Mima's growing dissociative identity disorder demands close attention from the viewer and the film will have you questioning just as much as its main character. It's easily one of my favorite anime films and an incredible horror thrill ride.
