36. Big Daddies (BioShock) (21 points)
Nominated by: Johnbobb

Importance: 7.5
Fear: 7
Snake: 6.5

I wonder if Big Daddies are the most memorable enemy to come out of the 7th generation of gaming. I certainly remember seeing them everywhere back when the original BioShock came out and there was much hype made over being made to play as one in the sequel. The one type of Big Daddy everyone knows is definitely the Rosie, with it's iconic drill and bulky diver suit design being both striking, deadly, and fitting right in with the underwater world of Rapture. It was a perfect storm of design and danger that enthralled BioShock players with a system of risk and reward while fitting right in with the lore of BioShock. I really like how Big Daddies will not just attack the player unprovoked, they will wait until the Little Sisters they protect are in danger, and even so will let you off with a warning as long as you take it. And to most players, it was a good deal, as Big Daddies are resource-draining encounters that will destroy you if you're not fully prepared to fight one. Slaying one always felt like an amazing accomplishment, but with accomplishment comes pain, as it now becomes up to you to decide what to do with their Little Sister, distraught over losing their guardian. It was a moral choice that resonated with most players (in my opinion, it's flawed but that's beside the point) and made each Big Daddy one to remember. Not many enemies can claim that.

37. The Hanging Balloons (Junji Ito comic) (20.5 points)
Nominated by: Pirateking2000
https://imgur.com/gallery/i2IJ6

Importance: 2.5
Fear: 8.5
Snake: 9.5

This is one of my favorite Junji Ito stories I've read to date. As usual, Junji has a way of unfolding the story that feels really natural and simple at first, but gradually peels back layer upon layer of juicy details that makes the story so effective. After a popular TV personality named Terumi commits suicide, a wave of copy-cat suicides soon follow. Of course, her rabid fans believe the boyfriend is to blame, and their taunts and assaults only add fuel to his already burning guilt over what happened. Suddenly, in the sky, a ghostly apparition appears and it looks just like Terumi. It's initially debated if it's a hoax or not, but our main protagonist, Kazuko, gets to see it for herself when Terumi's boyfriend invites her out to see it with her own eyes. And that's when things start getting terrifying in the way only Junji Ito can portray. The floating Terumi head makes her boyfriend commit suicide and it's soon revealed where the title of the story comes from as the boyfriend becomes one of the titular balloons and even more show up throughout Japan, one for each and every person. Some of the most horrifying imagery is when the balloon heads pop and the real, breathing counter-part suffers the same fate. The balloons are smart and use trickery to lure in their victims and eventually Kazuko believes herself to be the last person still alive, aside from her brother who went out and has yet to return. With the omnipresent ghosts forever outside her window, a true sense of isolation and permanent entrapment is always felt, and that's always where Junji Ito gets you the most. There's just no escape from The Hanging Balloons.

38. Silent Hill 2's In Water Ending (20.5 points)
Nominated by: Axl_rose_85

Importance: 2
Fear: 9
Snake: 9.5

One of the most powerful endings in gaming (though actually not my favorite ending of SH2), Silent Hill 2's infamous In Water ending sees James confronting his wife Mary and what he did to her at last, admitting his hatred towards her in her final moments and suffering for his actions ever since. Mary forgives James and allows his suffering to be enough to comfort her. Following this, James carries Mary out of her sickroom, and then drives at full speed right into Toluca Lake, finally able to be with Mary again at last. Like in all endings, Mary's full letter plays over the final scene, and here in the In Water ending, plays over an eerie underwater backdrop as the sun shines above and bubbles rise to the top. Though obviously there is no true canonical ending to Silent Hill 2, In Water to me fits in perfectly with the depressing tone the game sets and expands on throughout the journey. Masahiro Ito, the creature designer on Silent Hill 2, specifically designed Pyramid Head with the In Water ending in mind. Pyramid Head, the punisher for James' sins, is constantly chasing James throughout the game, forcing him to face what he had done over and over again as he executes Maria multiple times before his very eyes. James gets away every time, but deep down, he knows he should just die for what he's done. Cleverly, Silent Hill 2 makes the ending your (and James') choice, as you gain the In Water ending by acting suicidal: keeping your health low, mesmerized by the knife you take from Angela, anguishing yourself over files and notes. As always, Silent Hill 2 delivers a true, player-driven experience that ties gameplay and story inseparably, and as the game makes you earn certain endings, it just makes it that much more powerful to experience for yourself.

39. Halloween episodes of non-horror shows (20.5 points)
Nominated by: Johnbobb
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Halloween_television_specials

Importance: 9.5
Fear: 3
Snake: 8

The Halloween episode is a staple of television, a tradition that dates all the back to the 1950s and the increasing popularity of home broadcasting. Halloween episodes I feel are generally well-remembered and some even become required seasonal viewing for certain people if they're especially good. While very rarely are they truly scary, especially in sitcoms, it delivers a unique experience and memorable experience that shakes up the show and its characters, even if only for a week. It can bring out certain fears and facets of characters that we maybe normally don't get to see, or a chance for us to see Halloween traditions or close-to-horror moments played out in a humorous way. Though not as commonly used as it is in sitcoms, dramas can definitely play up a psychological or fearful edge, especially in crime dramas and can bring even strong-willed characters to a breaking point. I'm pretty sure it's a requirement for every animated series to have one of these at one point or another. They're always a fun addition to any show, adding even more charm and Halloween atmosphere to the October season.

40. Resident Evil 7: biohazard (20.5 points)
Nominated by: Axl_rose_85

Importance: 6
Fear: 6.5
Snake: 8

The dream finally came true. Resident Evil returned to its roots, and it was a glorious comeback indeed. After toying with survival horror/shooter hybrids in the Revelations series, RE7 switched to a first-person perspective previously reserved for spin-offs, with one foot firmly planted in the present but with a mind for the past and what made fans love the series in the first place. Survival horror was given a rebirth, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was the jolt to the system the long stagnated genre needed. It gave us a reason to conserve ammo and be afraid again, bringing back long-forgotten staples like item boxes, typewriters (in the form of cassette recorders), special keys slowly unlocking a persistent location, and Nemesis-style stalkers. It was the most faithful Resident Evil we had seen in an over a decade.

I'll admit, I had my reservations about this game when it was announced at E3. It seemed to me to be nothing like the series at all, whether classic or modern, and I thought it was following in the footsteps of P.T. and games like Outlast or Amnesia. Having no PS4 at the time, I waited until December to play the Beginning Hour demo on Xbox One, and that quelled any feelings of fear I had towards the game not resembling its predecessors. It frightened, it intrigued, it felt like the series had never left.

Then the game comes out, with a slow-burn prologue with some memorable moments quickly opening up to what is probably the most famous moment in the game, a Texas Chainsaw-style dinner scene with "the family" that quickly sets the tone and mood for the game, one that's pure Resident Evil: b-movie camp mixed with splatter film overtones that provides simultaneous levity and horror through its antagonists. The first hour is perhaps the best first hour in the series, throwing all sorts of RE Easter egg nuggets and references at the player whilst plunging them into the deep end gameplay wise, with the first enemies you face being bosses that are extremely hard to put down. Still, the pace slows down a bit eventually, giving you a chance to really explore the Baker estate and breath in that old RE smell.

There are a few downsides to the game. More enemy variety would have been great, I think the story nosedives a little in the second half, and the ship and mine areas aren't as fun as the estate was, but they're solid. The game's ending is honestly anti-climatic as well, with an enemy onslaught proceeding the final boss being the real final challenge; the game makes you think you're going to need your ammo for the last boss, but it ends up being the opposite. It felt like a cheap way to finish out, especially since the rest of the game is so deliberate with enemy placement.

Where does it rank with the other games in the series? For me, I think it falls in the middle. I don't love it as much as the classics, but they're hard to compete with, and I think it falls on the lower end of the main series actually. But hey, this is a series where I absolutely adore every game and Resident Evil 7 is no exception. After the messy, unfocused Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil 7 got the series back on its feet again and once again has me and many fans excited for the future.

Yeah, maybe. I was more interested in higher difficulty levels or other bonus content, cause yeah I think the controls are pretty okay on the GC. I'll keep it in mind should I ever see it at a steal, but lower priority that, I think.

Every subsequent version after GC includes Separate Ways (which follows Ada's side of the story), new costumes, and the new weapon P.R.L. 412.

41. The Curse (2005 film) (20.5 points)
Nominated by: Bane_of_Despair

Importance: 4
Fear: 8.5
Snake: 8

Perhaps the most underappreciated gem in found footage horror, The Curse is an unrelenting exercise of terror, shown through interconnected documentary clips about the fictional curse of Kagutaba. It's one of the best takes on the J-Horror curse I've personally seen, with so much care put into each clip that recalls past events with subtlety as the curse spreads like a viral outbreak. The mythology of the film runs deep and oozes with details, and the film is never afraid to linger on shots that make you feel like your breath is in suspended animation. The film may feel a little too slow at times, but I personally like slow-burn horror quite a bit, because it all adds to the atmosphere and realism of the film, and this film feels extremely real and it really is just like watching any documentary, with news broadcasts, informative sections, and face-to-face interviews punctuating most of the film. The ending sequence is one of the most disturbing endings to any horror film as well. Any horror fan owes it to themselves to seek out this excellent film.
