7. The Last of Us (26.5 points)
Nominated by: SlantedSilver

Importance: 9
Fear: 7.5
Snake: 10

A landmark title that made the waves in the gaming community, it was considered a new benchmark in mature video game storytelling and character development. It reminds me a lot of horror/post-apocalyptic dramas like this year's It Comes at Night, The Road, Carriers, or The Crazies, though I think The Last of Us is more well done than any of those movies.

The Last of Us, right out of the gate, comes swinging hard. We meet Joel, our main protagonist, a single father who comes home late on his birthday, with his daughter waiting up for him. The game quickly establishes their close relationship, so when things quickly start going south, things feel tense when you start playing as Joel's daughter and you can't find your father anywhere. A car ride paints the picture that the world will never be the same, and at the end of the prologue, the game immediately makes you feel sadness over a loss of life.

It's a perfect tone-setter for the rest of the game. 20 years later, Joel is still surviving the fungal apocalypse, with his smuggling partner Tess. Hardened and toughened over the years, the Joel we play as is experienced yet still vulnerable. When tasked with escorting the young girl Ellie to a safe zone, Joel again is faced with having a young girl to protect and care for in his life, challenging his character. Joel & Ellie's relationship grows organically throughout the game, as they grow closer and closer together, especially after Joel is forced to abandon Tess after she is bitten.

Despite being an unrelenting narrative of survival, character drama, and horror, The Last of Us never loses sight of its humanity much like its principal characters. Joel learns to open up as Ellie, having never lived in the world prior to the apocalypse, is constantly amazed and enthralled by the remnants of society left behind. The Last of Us is chock full of small character stories as well, like the grumpy survivalist Bill, or the two brothers Henry and Sam, who share a lot of similarities to Joel and Ellie's relationship and travel with them for a little bit. Characters come and go, but they leave behind lasting memories for the player and the main characters.

In addition to strong characters, The Last of Us features breathtaking locales. The world as we knew still feels intact despite overgrowth or flooding in certain areas, and everything that happens is immediately more memorable and more emotionally resonant because your surroundings are so believable. Forests, fields and wooded trails are overgrown, dense, and lush. Abandoned villages and metropolises alike are eerie, silent, and crumbling. It creates the perfect horror atmosphere to get immersed in.

Speaking of horror, your enemies, human and fungal mutant alike, are dangerous and smart. Fighting is tense, up-close and brawl heavy, and fungal encounters can end swiftly with one wrong move. Though they are blind, their sense of hearing makes sure you or Joel don't even breathe. Though a bit of Batman Detective Vision is present in the game, it doesn't drop the tension too greatly if at all. Some of the melee finishers remind me of late game Spec Ops: The Line kills.

With superb direction, characters, voice acting, locations, and storytelling, The Last of Us remains one of the most stellar games of the last generation. It's worthy of every bit of praise thrown its way, a rollercoaster ride spanning the human emotion spectrum. It will frighten, move, and even delight the player through its entirety, and worth a playthrough right this very minute if you haven't already.

The devil is in the details always. The game can make an innocent looking room with no enemies, a giant mirror, and sink become the scariest thing you've ever encountered in your life. The game gets more character mileage out of Heather remarking about a barbecued dog than other games do with entire scripts and bombastic cutscenes. The game takes time to develop a character that's never even seen, a hospital patient with a crush stalking Heather through Brookhaven. He makes his presence feel known despite his physical absence and his arc is a little touch of creepy and poignant. You would never think a file-only character can be a character you say you like a lot. The game has some of the most devious puzzles you'll ever find in gaming; make sure you pack your Shakespeare knowledge if you're planning to play this on hard puzzle difficulty. How can you not love a game with the guts to make that an actual thing you need to learn and know?

I understand why SH3 often gets overlooked. Silent Hill 2 is a perfect game after all, a game so in-tune with all elements of its design that it almost can't be topped by anything. Silent Hill 3 is often criticized for not changing the gameplay enough, its short length, for playing it too safe. In my eyes though, Silent Hill 3 is every bit as perfect as Silent Hill 2. It's at some points scarier, has stronger characters, and the same excellent attention to every minor detail of the world. The best way I can sum up SH3 is as a different side of the same coin, expanding on what SH2 did right whilst adding some personality of its own for that unique horror experience that Silent Hill fans crave.

8. Silent Hill 3 (26.5 points)
Nominated by: v_charon

Importance: 7
Fear: 9.5
Snake: 10

Too often overlooked by gamers and overshadowed by it's predecessor, Silent Hill 3 is just as artful, terrifying, devious, and masterfully detailed as Team Silent's previous efforts. In fact, it does some things even better than Silent Hill 2 does them, and that's a tall order. Silent Hill 3 returns back to series roots after the more stand-alone SH2, focusing on the malicious cult The Order and their attempts to make protagonist Heather Mason (last seen reincarnated as a baby Alessa) feel hatred and anger in order to birth the God they believe in. Compared to the deeply personal plot of Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3 appears grander and presents more stakes, but Heather is definitely the most well-realized character of the series and the story is just as personal. She's a far cry from the stoic everyman Harry Mason and the socially awkward James Sunderland. Heather gives us a younger perspective on being trapped in the town; she has typical teenage attitude and spunk, but also shows plenty of fear, confusion, and vulnerability to the dangers of the town. Initially anyway, Heather isn't really suffering from trauma or loss, and the game portrays a character getting acclimatized to this new twisted reality of strange monsters in a realistic manner. Heather is also well-characterized by her relationship to the ensemble cast of characters. She finds a father figure in the private investigator Douglas Cartland, a character who could've been himself a Silent Hill protagonist in any other game with the loss of his son. Claudia Wolf, the game's main antagonist, has a sisterly relationship towards Heather due to having a close relationship with Alessa when they were young, but Heather refuses to return the favor, and their arguments are some of the most powerful scenes in the game. Heather finds a sarcastic counterpart in Vincent Smith, a more reasonable member of the Order who straddles the line between ally and opponent whilst holding a conflicting view on God compared to the fanatical and zealous Claudia. Finally, despite not sharing any screen time really, Heather's love and relationship to her father is one of her defining aspects, so much so that her father's death at the hands of Claudia brought me to tears. Silent Hill 3 understands most of all how important character is at the center of the series. Each game brings a unique cast that's memorable and themed in their own ways, but the characters of SH3 always stand-out the most to me thanks to colorful, realistic personalities without being bogged down by only one type of trauma or one particular character trait.

Silent Hill 3 brings in a little more action to the series, with a larger variety of weapons to use and increased enemy counts in certain areas. Now, this still isn't Resident Evil 4 level of change, but it is a bit harder to feel afraid when carrying an awesome katana or SMG around with you. SH3 makes up for this though with great level design, tiny moments that will no doubt scare the crap out of you, and my favorite video game soundtrack of all time. Silent Hill has always been aces when it comes to atmosphere, and Silent Hill 3 continues to up the ante with a refreshing variety of locales. Just as you start to get tired of the Mall of America setting, the game shifts to a tense creeping through a quiet subway, and then an office building with a variety of businesses. Each location gives you something to remember it by; a near-fatal ghost encounter can be had in the subway, a piercing scream in Store Front Poseables will definitely make you change your pants, and later on, the game even takes you through a haunted house attraction that feels really unique.

Absolutely loved The Punisher, great performances from Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, great emotional core, brutal action with meaning behind it. It was the adaptation I was truly waiting for.

Of shows I continue to watch, I'm really enjoying the seasons of Legends of Tomorrow, Lucifer, and Gotham this year. Legends is pushing fun characters in fun settings and it's working out really well. Lucifer has one of my favorite episodes of the year with Off the Record. Gotham's storytelling is great and off-the-wall, despite a shaky start with stupid crime licenses. Of course, the Arrowverse Crisis on Earth-X crossover event was just as fun and exciting as previous years' crossovers. Oh, can't forget a strong season of Preacher either.

The Mist really surprised me this year and I was sad to see it cancelled. It had interesting changes from the film and novella and some good effects.

American Gods was one of my favorite new shows of the year, with strong characters, direction, and storyelling.

9. Samara Morgan (26.5 points)
Nominated by: V_charon

Importance: 8
Fear: 9.5
Snake: 9

Along with Candyman and Pennywise the Dancing Clown, Samara Morgan was one of my biggest fears as a kid. Her unnatural movements and abilities shook me to the core. Older now, I still find her pretty scary, but I also better understand the tragedy surrounding her character now. From her birth, Samara was tortured and abused by her parents, especially her bastard of her father. When she was transferred over to foster care, Samara unwillingly tortured her new parents with psychic abilities, driving her foster mother to insanity. Samara was locked away in a barn and even a psychiatric hospital couldn't help her. Her foster mother eventually cracked and threw her down in a well, where Samara lasted for seven days before succumbing to her death. However, Samara lives on through a cursed videotape, inflicting death on anyone who watches it after seven days are up. Despite her apparent malicious intents and hatred for humanity, Samara merely seeks a mother's love again, showing that beneath her terrifying exterior, she's still an innocent little girl at heart. With this backstory in mind, Samara's actions become a lot more impact in both fear factor and the sympathy department.

Samara has been one of the defining characters in popularizing the common J-horror vengeful ghost for Western audiences, along with The Grudge's Kayako. From a pure visual stand-point, Samara is instantly unsettling, and The Ring does an incredible job in crafting horror scenes through unique and memorable imagery with Samara as their strong centerpiece. Samara crawling out from a TV set, dripping wet and appearing ragged with long hair and dirty white dress, is burned into my mind and one of my absolute favorite horror scenes of all time. It's creative and a good use of the viewer/fiction relationship. What if Samara could crawl out of your TV set next? Maybe you'll jump at the first phone call you get after watching the movie. Maybe it sounds silly and unrational, but it worked on me as a kid and I wouldn't be surprised if there were others out there with the same experience.

Samara's mix of tragedy and terror is one that has gripped American audiences since The Ring was released. She's still a vital part of western horror and character with similar design will always be compared to Samara. Whether she terrifies you, makes you feel bad for her, or hey, maybe even brings you some sort of amusement, Samara's curse will live on in one form or another.

They remade it for PSP. >_>

That's true but I think they can an even better job on PS4.

A full-on remake would've been so much better.

10. Capgras Delusion (26.5 points)
Nominated by: jcgamer107
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capgras_delusion

Importance: 8
Fear: 9.5
Snake: 9

Imagine waking up one morning, and seeing your mom, or brother, or even your beloved dog or cat. It's just like any other day, except something is off. In your mind, the person you knew and loved is not them. They've been replaced. You become scared and frightened of them, becoming completely untrusting towards them to the point of needing protection or calling the cops on them. For some people with schizophrenia, a brain injury, or dementia, this is an all too-real possibility. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like for somebody going through this, to be with someone you were formerly close to and who knows nearly everything about you while you become drenched with paranoia over apparent trickery and evil deception. On the flipside, the person on the receiving end of Capgras delusion will feel a sense of fear and concern and can certainly damage their emotions as well. It's a chilling scenario to imagine, and it's not as rare as you may think. Still, it's interesting to read up on the psychology behind it, and even some stories sound straight out of a horror film. It's certainly a complex issue, and one that still requires plenty of studying and more new information to be truly able to conquer and cure it.

I'm totally not fine with them living. The ending was set up for someone important to die. It was set up to be a capstone on five seasons - the end of the basic conceit of the show had come, and the island itself was pretty much done for the show's purposes. But of course - OF COURSE - the writers don't understand how to create gravity or substance. So everyone lived because of course they did.

I would have only kept the following alive: Nyssa (guest character), Slade (guest character), Black Canary (too new to get a handle), Mister Terrific (an actual name that matters).

Kill off everyone else.

I wanted them to do this so bad. And I think you still could've even had a more brutal Oliver with less deaths than you suggest if they still wanted to keep some primary cast members on. Could've moved to a new city, had some solo crime fighting or one partner, a real Longbow Hunters feel.
