Any on there you'd recommend beyond the obvious ones (like Resident Evil, Prey and Evil Within)?

Whilst I haven't played them personally I've heard really great things about Darkwood, Detention, Yomawari, and Stories Untold.

I'm of the opinion that the Silent Hill games wouldn't be half as good and scary if not for the memorable soundtrack work of Akira Yamaoka. His work touches on nearly all genres; the most principal being alternative rock, trip hop, industrial, dark ambient, and a little bit of heavy metal. Akira has worked on every game in the series with the exception of Silent Hill: Downpour, and has also played the role of producer on the series ever since Silent Hill 3. Akira designs each game's music with different themes and settings in mind. The original Silent Hill soundtrack is heavily industrial and is a very cold, harsh and unwelcoming OST to listen to fully, but it fits the game's atmosphere perfectly as the game invokes images of freezing, snowy streets and grungy grate metal clanging underfoot. Silent Hill 2 toys with alternative rock melancholy and ambient atmosphere that represents the game's more introspective nature. Silent Hill 3 combines many of Akira's compostions with the lovely vocals of Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, and to me almost feels like a concept album that centers around more the game's main characters and plays in with the game's larger emphasis on character relationship. Each track Akira composes bursts with personality and I can easily match them with where they play in-game because of their distinct feel and huge role in boosting all the games' atmosphere. Akira Yamaoka has done many other Konami games and has worked on the Suda51 horror games Lollipop Chainsaw, Shadows of the Damned, and Let It Die, though with those games emphasis on action and style Akira brings different genres to his compositions that aren't as moody as the Silent Hill series. They're enjoyable in their own way, but for me, Akira remains the king of video game music for being such a vital part of one of my favorite series of all time.

Sure, you can argue Nosferatu or The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari are the very roots of horror on film, the very beginning you can trace all horror movies back to. And yes, that's true, with the exception of some pre-1920s stragglers. To me though, 1931's landmark Dracula represents a more concrete beginning for horror films. It was one of the first horror films to feature sound, though it lacks a score and often has lengths of time with little dialogue. Bela Lugosi's magnetic performance brings to life the first huge horror icon on the silver screen. It launched a bloodline of sequels and a cinematic universe way before Marvel stepped on to the scene. It's crumbling Gothic architecture and defining of now classic vampire tropes continues to haunt audiences through every generation.

Dracula is a mystery film just as much as it is a horror film. Count Dracula in the film is presented as an enigmatic figure and there's a strong central narrative in figuring out what Dracula really is and what's he done to Renfield, an innocent businessman brought under mind control by the Count. With directing duties shared between Tod Browning and Karl Freund in secret, Dracula is built with a keen sense of meticulous atmosphere and pacing to its character development. Count Dracula here definitely isn't some between the scenes force with no presence. Dracula takes matters into his own hands and is just as capable of producing real fear with his icy stare as he is with his broken and deliberate speech pattern meant to invoke the idea of a talking corpse. Even Renfield is a stand-out as one of the creepiest characters in the film; Dwight Frye's performance is understated but it gets under skin with no trouble.

You can't deny Dracula is a true classic and huge milestone in horror. Every frame of this film is enough to invoke chills and frights on a cold, chilly night. It's endlessly quotable and has burnt the now iconic image of Lugosi's Dracula into everyone's minds. For those who have not seen it, Dracula bids you welcome!

Thumper - Survival horror/rhythm game that feels excellent to play whilst you are always teetering on the verge of death whilst getting assault by Lovecraftian entities.

There's a game called Driver Survival that's pretty close to a survival horror/racing game.

I find Batman: Arkham Asylum to be an interesting genre mix, with beat 'em up/stealth action mixed with a survival horror setting and atmosphere. Devil May Cry fits that mold too without the stealth.

Koudelka is a turn-based strategy RPG with survival horror elements that I've always loved.

I was with the Legends of Tomorrow (specifically Mick Rory, Sara Lance, and Vixen) in a sort of medieval village/celebration, and we had to rescue Taylor Swift because she had somehow time traveled to the time period causing an anachronism. We blended in at first enjoying the celebration, then a fight broke out and Mick used his heat gun to defend us as we grabbed Taylor. Somehow we all ended up in my neighborhood with a black van chasing us, and then the scene shifted again to a New York City street, where Taylor got kidnapped by the people in the black van and also grabbed Mick.

And that was it.

Arguably the most infamous and notorious serial killer of all time, as well as the most famous unsolved case of all time, Jack the Ripper continues to astound modern audiences, historians, and investigators to this day. He has become a legend, an almost revered historical figure, who's story has become a mixture of fact, folklore, pseudo-history, and fiction. We still don't know his true identity, and with over 100 theories put forth, it doesn't seem like we ever will. If you've seen the crime scene photos, you know how messed up Jack the Ripper truly was, with horrific mutilations done to his canonical five victims, all women and all prostitutes, often found with their organs missing. There are an additional six victims that some believe are connected to Jack the Ripper as well.

The case of Jack the Ripper was one of the first media frenzies to gain traction, generation a previously unseen level of hysteria and fear at that time. Sales of periodicals and newspapers were increased by the murders; we can still see a similar effect in news reports about mass shootings and murderers as well. These stories were often rushed and untrue, creating sensationalism and muddling the truth of the murders even further. The media also helped name Jack, creating a trend we see in later serial killers like the Boston Strangler or the Zodiac Killer.

As the Ripper has no real image or face, many sources have combined to create an image of what he would've likely looked at the time, including many fictional stories in the horror genre. Particularly, Jack is associated with Dracula and the vampire myth, with a cloaked look being prominent and the idea of sucking out one's blood being the biggest factors taken from that source. Jack has also been associated with high society and the look of a well-to-do British gentlemen is also a popular image of the Ripper. He has been used as a symbol of high society's corruption and wickedness towards the common population. Another thing to note is Jack's connection to Spring-Heeled Jack, another devilish and vicious attacker that was prominent at the time.

Despite Jack's overwhelming "popularity" and infamy, we should do well to never forget the truly horrific murders he has committed. Yet, there's no denying the draw of the case, and it definitely has become something even bigger than it was at the time. As always, it's our natural inclination to be drawn to the dark and terrible, and as such, Jack the Ripper remains one of the biggest influences on horror culture due to the intense mystery and intrigue surrounding the figure.
