It's not, no. I'd always wash my hands first, but I think anyone would follow that.

I would use utensils myself, but that's a "I don't want to put my hand in something hot", not a "this is how you eat it"

Depends on context, really. That's how they do it there, and so I would follow custom without trouble. But I would be put off if I saw it in a restaurant here.

I'm Indian and I do eat with my hands a lot. Rotis and naans etc.

But growing up in the UK. For some reason rice I don't eat with my hands as my parents do.

Maybe when I was really young but I stopped, probably because I was very messy with it.

Im South Asian so I eat with my friends. I remember my dumbass former friend would act so grossed out by that. Hes republican and became a christian priest.

Its fine. Ive seen my Indian friends do it.

We also use our hands to eat pizza, fried chicken, fries etc.

it's literally no different from finger foods which is supposedly fine but if people from another culture or country eat their foods with their hands then it's suddenly not fine

People use their fingers to eat chicken tenders, nuggets, and legs. Theoretically, isn't that just as gross?

Soups are about the only thing I would be grossed out about by eating using hands, honestly. Or dips. Everything else, as long as you're not flinging it everywhere I couldn't care less what you're using to eat as far as utensils or hands go.

Plain rice no. If it has some kind of sauce on it then yes, just because sauces often leaves your skin feeling sticky and gross until you wash it off.

I perfer a rice thats a bit sticky. So sometimes if I eat a bowl and theres some left I scoop it around with my fingers. So both actually

As long as its not family style where people are sharing a big center bowl. Ive seen that and Im not a germ freak or anything but I dont want to do that. Like yeah I get people probably do worse in their kitchen while making the food or in a restaurant that I used to eat it but still I dont want someone dipping their hands in a bowl, putting it in their mouth then dipping back into the bowl again.

Seems too messy to me, but ydy ig.

well obviously you eat a bowl of soup with your tongue. just roll it into a straw and suck it up.

Kind of an odd choice but not super outrageous. Using my hands to eat small wet things wouldn't be my first choice.

The only time I find it gross is when a bunch of people are digging in the same bowl with their hands. To me it seems a spoon would be easier unless it's a big ball of sticky rice.

Some foods like fried chicken can't be eaten any other way unless you want to struggle cutting it off the bone and eating it with a fork.

If you have the choice between using utensils and your hands, I'd say it's fairly strange to use your hands. It doesn't really feel analogous to other finger foods because most of those are large singular items.

I really don't care. Though genuinely it kinda depends on a social setting. I wouldn't expect someone to sit down at dinner with someone and use their hands there.

I'm Filipino and even I think it's gross.

I wouldn't call it gross and uncivilized, but if you're not eating rice that sticks together, like a rice ball, then using your hands would take more effort to eat it. So definitely inefficient in that case

Eating rice with your hand isn't exactly uncommon with Indians and it's not just a class based thing. It's entirely possible he grew up eating like that occasionally and there's no reason to jump to the idea that he's doing it purely for performative reasons. With his ethnic background it checks out.

South Asians eat with our hands naturally, its not a poverty thing. Easier to manipulate and mold the food.

Mahmoud Mamdani a Mira Nair have been public figures for literally decades in film and academia. Never once have I seen them eat with their hands or even mention it.

Maybe Zohran did grow up that way, but I honestly doubt it. It's not a major thing and he's obviously the best choice for NYC, but people refuse to believe the guy is a politician

Lmao what? Are you in denial that this is a common part of our culture? Dude, I eat with my hands almost every other day, and Im 32 and American. We have plenty of foods in our culture which work best that way. Just because we use utensils doesnt mean we never use our hands. Calling a South Asian performative for using their culture is deeply ignorant.

I've never once contemplated whether how someone consumes food is a sign of whether they are "civilized." Now that the idea is in my head, I believe it to be some Colonialist bullshit.

Eat however you want. There's a lot of food people eat with their hands that I try to use a napkin if possible. Also ate quite a bit of African food with my hands that would be considered soupy.

I do get grossed out when people cook with their bare hands, even though I know that's normal in certain circumstances.

It not inherently most gross than anything else traditionally eaten with the hands, but it certainly seems to me to be more trouble than it's worth compared to other food eaten with the hands. So many tiny little grains. I feel like m&ms are about the smallest sized food that it makes sense to go at with your hands as opposed to a spoon. But no, it would be stupid to say it's gross when we eat saucy chicken wings with our hands. That's much messier and I go HAM on wings, so...
