Wait, was it embarrassing because he was wearing a Pac-Man costume, because someone forced you to wear the aforementioned costume, or are you just being wryly facetious about some traumatic incident of yours?

I never liked spooky stuff and still don't. I still despise Halloween. The creepy levels in DK64 and Banjo Kazooie were always a dread to have to go through. Never liked the Shadow Temple in OOT either. Although, Ikana Canyon was kind of a "cool creepy."

I backed Yooka-Laylie which was just horribly disappointing rather than embarrassing.

I think the only thing that qualifies as embarrassing that I can remember is wanting to try out the Harvest Moon franchise and going to Blockbuster to rent the latest iteration without doing any research, and so not knowing that it was the one where you specifically play as a cute girl and romance dudes. Which explained why the guy who rung me up gave me such a weird look.

The creepiest game I ever played as a kid was Mountain King on the Atari 800 (it was also available for the 2600 & 5600).

At the bottom of the mine there are passages containing a large number of diamonds and often a treasure chest or two. Very tempting for the explorer who wants to rack up points quickly.

But if you remain on the bottom level for more than a few seconds, you will hear a scuttling noise, and a few moments later a giant spider will race across the screen. You can't outrun him, and there are only a few places where you can try to jump over him. If he catches you, he will wrap you in a web. You may be able to struggle free by quickly moving the controller up and down. If you cannot escape before the spider returns, he will eat you alive as you continue to struggle.

Each level the spider gets harder to see and harder to escape, until level 8, when he becomes invisible except for his shadow moving across the diamonds, and becomes impossible to escape his web.

"created by the same team that worked on beloved classic game"

game ends up being a 5/10

why does this happen?

Because it's usually not the same team.

When it's the same studio name, but 80% of the original employees have since quit or been fired, and they've been replaced by relatively mediocre people who lack anything resembling the game vision, that studio is no longer capable of producing anything resembling what the original studio did.

It's like, if I wrote LotR bad fanfiction, but I changed my name to Tolkien, it wouldn't suddenly become a fantastic work of fantasy literature. It would still be bad fanfiction. Brand name alone doesn't mean anything.

Even in cases where it IS mostly the same team (sometimes under an entirely different studio name, like Obsidian being the leftovers from Black Isle, BioWare refugees fleeing to Archetype, or a lot of the CD Projekt people who worked on The Witcher games leaving to form their own studio), people aren't necessarily the same people they were 20 years earlier. Age can often impede creativity, and sometimes someone who helped create a culturally massive game decades ago simply don't have any worthwhile new ideas to do it all over again.

It's also not helped when the publisher execs tend to force commands down on the devs rather than simply saying "Okay, you guys, make a good game and we'll sell it." When the publisher is like "Hey guys, open-world live service model online multiplayer battle royale with season passes and recurrent spending are the popular thing these days, you should totally try to force all of that into the game, even if the previous game that was popular was mostly just a simple single-player RPG," it's probably not going to work out too well.

Most games these days are made by a massive team of talentless devs with no vision and misguided goals, being directed by clueless execs, being made to please investors rather than consumers, and wearing the zombie corpse skin of previously popular IPs rather than being a natural and organic continuation of them. It's not entirely surprising that most of them are either completely soulless or outright crap.

A rare game will slip through here or there where it actually feels like the dev team had good ideas and mostly free rein, and they somehow managed to make a worthwhile game in spite of all the potential hurdles. But it's becoming more and more rare, especially in the AAA sphere.

Just the sheer amount of stuff I've given away. My n64, various ps1 and 2 games. Then the stuff given to game stop for credit.

I really wish I'd have kept it all but back then I didnt think I'd be playing them again because the newer consoles were cooler.

I can play all of it through....methods...but how cool would it be if I'd have kept my n64 and 20 classic games?

One cool thing about having a drug-addicted sibling who sells your games to pay for meth is that I don't have to blame myself for all the classic games I definitely would've sold, lol.

Id be kicking myself all the time if it was me who sold my copy of aria of sorrow, ocarina of time, etc

Yeah I've backed prob a ten Kickstarters or so and they've been mostly positive experiences. Couple of the games were underwhelming but that's the worst of it.

The Ouya was a huge miss though lol

I have yet to finish FF7 for this reason. My 80+ hour save where I had bred golden chocobos and fought a couple Weapons and was on the path to fight Sephiroth got wiped out. Honestly killed my desire to finish the original. I doubt I ever will. I've seen the ending on YouTube.

Been playing the remake though

So what were you mad about? Was it too high? Because an 8.8 is nearly a perfect score.

I don't know how the game actually was, I never played much of it. And I haven't really learned what the general consensus is. I feel like the wolf part would be pretty divisive. It definitely was the thing that turned me off from the game.

In line with the creepy post from earlier, as a young kid, I used to watch my dad play resident evil. The game scared the crap out of me.

Ive been trying to beat the franchise, namely the remakes, and holy smokes, I sonfreaking terrified. Remake 1 was scary, as was 2 and 3 remake. 4 wasn't really scary for the most part since Leon is basically a super hero, and you have a ton of ammo, but there were some parts that scared me a bit.

I tried playing re7 and am just terrified. I dropped the game for a bit lol. I think I have some sort of mental scarring or something from being scared by code Veronica all those years ago.
