It's the start of Pokemon's downfall in some ways, but it had some really good ideas too. It's easily the gen that did online the best, and it brought the main series to 3D for better or worse. In exchange, its main-game campaign was bleh due to the bad story and not knowing how to balance around the new EXP Share.

But it at least built a solid foundation. OR/AS showed how that foundation can lead to some amazing games. And then Sun and Moon squandered a lot of it and it's been a roller coaster of mediocrity to flat out bad since then.

I was in college during XY and it was such a good experience, arguably a once in a lifetime community gaming experience for me. People had 3DSes everywhere. Doesn't save the rest of the game, though, yeah

My most-played game in the series, after GSC, and one of my favorites. I know this is an extremely unpopular opinion but I just love going back to it. Really a great-feeling Pokemon experience for me.

Still enjoy Pokemon, even if this is probably its most by the numbers entry. Seeing it in 3D with that new depth of sound was great. Also this is the game that enabled me to get a living Pokedex which I sank a fair amount of hours into. The wide range of available Pokemon was a good compensation for that gen being a little lacking.

It was the turning point of Pokemon not being top tier anymore, but it's still good.

Pretty clearly the pokemon gen that I connected least with, I'm not even sure if I finished the main story and I remember almost nothing of the experience. I feel like S/M get a lot of criticism that would be better directed here - at least those games had some creative ideas and a fun sense of setting.

It gets a lot of points for its online multiplayer, a good region, character customization, and a few actually challenging parts; it is the last Pokemon game I recall needing brain cells for. On the flip side, the supporting cast is forgettable and the main story is by the numbers. It did a lot of things right and I have a lot of good memories from it, even if it's not the best Pokemon game.

X/Y is certainly the main turning point, but the 3DS Pokemon games were still generally good (outside of Ultra SuMo being lazy sidegrades released a mere year later). Whereas the Switch games are where things really went off the rails with stuff like Dexit, forced EXP Share, increased emphasis on catching Pokemon over battling (mainly in Let's Go and Arceus), and just generally feeling like lazy cash grabs.

I still enjoyed this one a fair bit, but I would agree that this was the beginning of the end for me

(Sword and Shield being what completely killed off my interest in the franchise)
