I currently dont have much luxury to "prepare." Everything is so expensive now im not really saving jack. My salary has increased by like 30% in the past 5 years and it just seems to be keeping me up with inflation in all honesty

Why would you get into a relationship with a "pass around girl"?

We all gotta die at some point. I want to enjoy life when I'm young and capable. If I made it to 60s I'd be content. I dont want to be 70+ and ****** myself in public and struggling to survive.

I can probably work in my field for another 5-10 years then grab an odd end jobs. If social security isn't around for me then I'm toast. Iv got a 401k and ira but they're nowhere near where they should be for someone my age.

Ugh.

The thing is, when Social Security was first introduced, life expectancy was only 60 years old.

Social Security was originally meant to be something that only some people would collect (because a lot of people would die before they ever reached 65), and then not for very long. Sure, some people might live into their 90s and subvert the system, but it was never meant to be something that everyone would wind up collecting for like 20+ years.

It also doesn't help that Social Security is basically a pyramid scheme, where the young are paying to support the old, so differences in birth rate mean that a ton of pressure is being put on the young (which is why people have been pointing out that Social Security reform has needed to be a thing for decades now). We just have a really hard time ever touching how it works, because the elderly are one of the strongest voting blocks, and they hate whenever a politician talks about Social Security reform.

Plus, telling people for their entire lives that they can retire and collect Social Security at age 65 and then telling them you've changed the rules is a good way to alienate your entire voter base. Which is why most changes at this point wind up having to be grandfathered in (like if they changed retirement age to 75 tomorrow, they'd probably add a clause that everyone born before 2020 was still valid for the old threshold).

If anything, full retirement age should probably be something closer to 80 now. But that's a hard sell when generations of people have grown up seeing Social Security as something they're entitled to, not just something they might be able to collect if they're lucky.

Unless you are in your 60's now, Social Security ain't going to exist when you are 70.
