Yes, its that time again, where we rank 30 animated movies. It is largely focused on the past two years, but there are handful that are older (and weirder). For the first time ever, the non-US movies hold a slim majority, largely due to domestic studios being obsessed with easy money grab sequels and... (insert long-winded rant about the state of the American animation industry here) But anyway, we have a lot of really good films this time around, which highlight the many facets of the diverse and vibrant art of animation. We also have Wish. One thing I'd like to mention about The Adventures of Prince Achmed is that some sources have it without a soundtrack, or with this annoying narrator tacked on, and I would highly suggest avoiding both of those. In retrospect I think Anomalisa was one of the films I underrated the most, I had it in 14th but I'd probably rank it like 2nd if we did that same list again. The ending where we see that Lisa's experience with Michael gave her a lot of newfound confidence even though from being inside his head the whole film we as the viewer see him as a deeply terrible person is so interesting to me. The Wild Robot and Nimona seem like two likely frontrunners for second place. On the bottom side I think Wish and Ruby Gillman seem like the most likely to unite everyone in thinking they're not good before films like Fantastic Planet and Son of the White Mare start dropping around 28. I'll be curious to see where Flow and Mario end up, those are two of the movies that seem hardest to call --- What says dunnock, drush, or dove? "Love me tender, tender love." ... I thought My Neighbour Totoro was a cute and sweet movie but it never had the same emotional impact for me as that last scene in Pom Poko where the tanuki accept that their world is lost but use their illusion powers to revisit it one last time. Well at least it made the top 10 and most of the films above it are considered to be masterpieces. Cat Returns and Castle in the Sky being above it does seem surprising though considering my understanding of what Ghibli fans generally consider the best movies. If you switch to the Letterboxd average ratings, My Neighbour Totoro goes up to 6, Grave of the Fireflies becomes 1st place which is cool because it would be my #1...out of the four movies on the list I've seen. The Cat Returns has the biggest difference and falls all the way to 18th, and the aforementioned Castle in the Sky also takes a big drop and winds up outside the bottom 10.
