By the way, in Turkish (and probably other languages) toes are considered fingers so we would typically have twenty.

No, the Turkish for finger is parmak and the thumb is called ba parmak which literally translates to head finger. As in the leader of the fingers, though ba refers to the body part as well. So in that language there is no distinction at least.

Although surely it would be eighteen and two anyway as the big toe is in terms of both form and function much more like a toe than the thumb is a finger. It is also called one.

My wife is one of those "the thumb is not a finger" people so I'm already well versed in this argument

finger originally came from the word 5 so I find this whole thing kind of funny.

Digit refers to fingers or toes.
Finger is the digits of the hands
toes is the digits of the feet

pinky finger
ring finger
middle finger
index finger
thumb finger

A thumb is just a unique type of finger. Saying a thumb isn't a finger is like saying that a square isn't a rectangle.

But a rectangle isn't a square!
