Any alternatives? Do I have to change browsers now or is there another comparable extension?

I would normally say Firefox + uBlock Origin, but Firefox is beginning to get enshitified with AI garbage and data mining. Commonly recommended alternatives to Firefox are LibreWolf and WaterFox.

I would stay far away from Chrome and all other Chromium-based browsers. Google is getting a little too uppity with their need to control how websites are displayed and limit the end user's ability to have that same control. Fuck google.

I've already accepted the reality that there is no world in which my browsing and data is truly safe, private, and protected from harvesting and resale. As much as people want to try duckduckgo and spinoff browsers that claim to protect their data... it's just futile to think that either A.) they are actually protecting you, or B.) they aren't selling your shit anyways even though they claim not to be. (Or C.) - they actually are keeping your data private today, but will sell it at some point in the future when a big enough check is offered)

It's too much work. They have my data, they have yours, they have it all. Accepting that reality has made me sleep a lot easier.

I admittedly am 1 for 1 so far. Not a big sample size obviously. But gamefaqs immediately went to its u-block levels of usability, which is a good start. The reddit ads are gone too.

You can re-enable ublock in Chrome even though they insist that it's not supported. Presumably it won't be able to receive updates, though, so that's only a temporary solution.

This is an unfortunate mindset to have. But whatever makes you happy I guess. It's not as if I'm sitting around stressing about my precious data. I'm just against the practice in principle. We are essentially products for these giant tech companies whose greed is utterly insatiable. Double-fuck them.

Firefox has been one of the best private browsers. It's free open source software and has been the default browser on Linux for a long time. Up until now there was never a concern about them mining data or adding useless AI crap that nobody wants or needs.

Use LibreWolf + uBlock Origin. Brave and Edge are Chromium and thus only useful for downloading a better, firefox-based, browser.

Yeah if pi continues to work like this then I won't bother re-installing ublock because you're right, eventually google will do something to undo ublock and ublock won't be able to update to match it.

Oh yeah I mean fuck them agreed. I just am resigned to the fact that nothing is truly private anymore. Your computer, your phone, hell your car is listening at this point.

Librewolf + ublock has a couple of mentions ITT now, so maybe that's my next step if pi falls apart.

For this small sample size, yes. I've started 3 videos now (one of which was just a second of the trailer for s2 of Andor, which obviously would've had an ad) and none of them had ads. Again, still small sample size, but so far so good.

Brave is a Chromium browser. Most of the problems you face with Chrome are going to apply there as well. If not now, almost certainly soon.

I didn't know this was possible. I have to install my browsers and stuff to a new PC and when I tried installing uBlock on Chrome again it wouldn't let me download it. Not to worry though as I just went back to firefox that supports uBlock for now and use Chrome as a secondary browser as and when it's needed.

It wouldn't surprise me if you can't install it anymore, but if it's already installed and you get the message that's all like "this extension is no longer supported because we're greedy poopoo heads, so we've disabled it. Do you want to remove it?", you can decline removing it, go to your extensions menu, and enable it directly against Google's "advice."

Then what's the solution? What good does it do to worry about something when there is no feasible way to correct it or protect oneself from it. Acceptance of a situation doesn't necessarily mean you need to resign from taking common sense practices in protecting your own data, it just means accepting what you can't control. It's probably in your best interest not to fully trust any corporation or what they promise anyways. Never rely on them to have your best interest in mind.

That's how it was for me. Not sure about installing it new, but thankfully I was able to re enable it. I only use chrome to play Granblue, so it's not a huge deal.

If I didn't make it clear, I pretty much agree with all of that. The person I was replying to isn't just accepting the situation, they're throwing their hands up in defeat. I understand it's not a big deal for many if not most people.

That's where I am at. It gives me peace, actually, as I no longer worry about it or think that it's in my power to change that reality. I have an opinion, make no mistake, but have the liberty to keep that in my pocket.

Use Zen Browser or LibreWolf.

Waterfox has some strange problems with windows turning white when you have multiple open side-by-side.

Avoid Brave. It's still Chromium-based, plus some crypto nonsense and a scumbag CEO.

Oh yeah it's bad. Gamefaqs has to make all their money from the 10 or so people that don't know how to use an ad blocker.

This isn't great advice. The Lite version only exists because Chromium is dog shit. It doesn't even support custom rules, which I use to fix various aspects of youtube and block annoying elements on other websites.
