This does a lot of things right within the framework of being a Pokemon game, but unfortunately that framework is going to place a ceiling on the rating no matter what, at least with me.

One of the weaker gens tbqh

In 2000 this would have easily been a 10 but now there are better Pokemon games. My main gripes with these games are that most of the Johto Pokemon are terrible (in battle, not design-wise) and the level up movesets are dreadful. Like Heracross doesn't get a STAB move until level 44. Of course, as a kid I just rolled the entire game with Feraligatr

Truly incredible for its time. The sheer amount of places you can go, things you can do, and all that still holds up pretty well, and the Pokemon selection is still pretty good. The one thing that sucks, however, is that the Elite Four are too strong compared to everything before them, forcing you to grind up a level or two. They also needed a remake to fix Silver having a Crobat despite him being an abusive trainer.

But on the overall, the nostalgia outweighs the bad things. There may be other Pokemon games I like more at this point, but this one is still great.

HGSS obsoletes it and the final two bosses save it from being the worst mainline games (until SwSh).

Amazing dex, but you can scarcely find the Gen II pokemon in Johto, the map is kinda weird and Kanto is so...it's indescribable what a feeling it was getting that reveal and walking through it as a kid, but you look back on it and it's such a shell, there's hardly anything there. It looks and sounds great though, and Crystal was essentially my first video game, so I have a huge soft spot for it.

Revisiting Kanto is one of the most memorable parts of any Pokemon game, and I love both the GBC aesthetic and the batch of critters it introduced, but this is probably the most jank 2D Pokemon game, especially as a singleplayer experience where it is super restrictive in terms of options until the post game
