changmas posted... If both players play 4 copies, you could end up playing 8 total games of MTG to decide one, which is incredible! Crazier than that, you can create subgames inside of subgames; playing four copies of Shahrazad allows you to create 15 subgames. If your opponent is also running four copies and dedicated to the bit, it escalates to a potential 355 subgames! https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/6bdh1r/the_ridiculousness_that_is_shahrazad/ If you want to see the math. That's not even getting into cards that duplcate or repeat effects, which allows for functionally infinite subgames. Legendary Yogg-Saron, Hope's End - As (primarily) a mage player, this card was awesome before it got nerfed. It kind of seemed like a turning point for me in accepting that Hearthstone really wasn't about being a serious and skill testing card game and said "random bullshit go". Back in my day, the 30 cards you put in your deck were actually the only 30 cards you were going to see. Then we got discover, and now it seems like at least half of the cards you play in a typical game of Hearthstone weren't even in your deck in the first place. But I digress. Yogg was so funny because it was the ultimate 'flip the table' card. If you're going to lose and you have more or less no way to win, just play Yogg and see what happens. I think in Mage you could get up to around 15-20 spells most of the time, which was usually enough to end the game either way. On average it heavily benefited the person who played it, even on an empty board just for the sheer amount of board clear spells in the standard pool at the time. Of course, who can forget when it casted DOOM! to clear a full board and also burn your whole deck, losing you the game on the spot! Pot of Greed Black Lotus - Maybe the only(?) MTG card to break into broader pop culture, The One Ring aside. This card, as virtually everyone knows, is just broken. get an extra 3 mana on a turn where you can still play your one land too. Cheat something out 3 mana ahead of when it's meant to come out. Generically good in literally every single deck ever. It's maybe more difficult to create a deck that this wouldn't make the cut in. Hearthstone had to nerf innervate eventually and that only gave you 2 extra mana on a single turn and it was still broken. Shahrazad Broken The Caverns Below Dominion (Neon White) Pedro Martinez's 1999 Strat-O-Matic card Raigeki - Destroy all monsters your opponent controls. No cost. Totally Broken, even with Yugioh's numerous counterspell cards. Was Yugi Moto stupid? Why did he not just play 4 copies of this card and trivialize all his matches with his Heart of the Cards ability? In any other game, this would both have an actual cost associated with playing it and probably a symmetrical effect to destroy your own board too! Cyber-Stein - Okay, this makes the Dragon seem really bad. I'm assuming this card reads "pay 5000 LP, do some extra deck nonsense, then win the game this turn". Your life points don't matter if you can win the game on the spot! If you can't win the game in one turn with a free Special Summon, it's probably bad. The Moops Remove Visor - Cyclops (OverPower) Interplanetarypurplythorny Dragon Great Thromok the Insatiable 4 (Sorry) - Having not played this since I was a child, I mixed it up with Trouble. I thought it had the little Boggle dice popper thing, but that's actually Trouble. Given that the objective of the game is to go forward, this card which sends you back 4 spaces must be terrible, and yet it isn't! As long as you can keep one of your four game pieces at the Start line (OR after it gets moved back by someone else), you can play this card and end up just a couple spaces short of the finish line. Generally bad in scenarios where you've only got one or two pieces left that have advanced part of the way around the board though, which keeps it from being too good, though it does literally break one of the rules of the game. Queen of Spades (Hearts) - My family used to play Hearts pretty often when I was a kid. I actually think you probably want to have the Queen of Spades in your hand so you (probably) have control of when to play it. For those who don't know, this is a game of scoring the least points and while each Heart is worth 1 of the 26 possible scoring points, the Queen of Spades is worth a massive 13. Of course, you can end up with inevitable hands where you're forced to play it and win a hand of 3 lower cost spades. But generally, you'd rather have the opportunity to throw it down on another suit you've run out of, or on a higher spade, than to have it thrust upon you by someone else. Good Overroid - Okay, this game actually looks SO cool. Amazing nomination. I would love to play it if there was any way to procure an English copy. It's really straight up my alley as far as a simple game with so much depth of strategy. After looking at the other cards, my initial assumption would be that this card is good - and better than the 1. Innocence card - but not broken by any means. While it is of course an insta-win card if successful, there are so many counter cards for it that it really isn't going to be possible to win with it all that often. The biggest advantage to the player with this card is having a guaranteed 12 power card vs. a 1 power card on the other side. So long as you don't play this at the same time as the Innocence card and lose you the game on the spot, it's likely to get you a lot more value just by virtue of you having a 12 power card and them having a 1 power card, even when the effect gets nullified. King of Hearts Ashe (Final Fantasy) - Generally a card having 4 different effects means it's going to be pretty good, just because of the versatility. In this case, we can pick 2 abilities each turn between cycling a card, giving +1000 to water type characters, untapping a card, or silencing a low cost character (probably a blocker?). The first two are generic enough that they can be useful in any game state, and then you have the added flexibility to remove abilities when needed or to untap something so it can attack or perhaps use an ability a second time? I'd evaluate this as a solid utility card in a Water-type deck. I'm not sure if 4cost for 8000 power is a standard statline in this game, but if it's actually overstatted too it could be much higher. Storm of Steel Uno Reverse Claire Redfield Decent Gimmick (Chain of Memories) - As someone who has played all the mainline Kingdom Hearts games and the big spinoffs, this is a game I just can't get into. I made it maybe 2 hours into Re:COM and the game is just...not good. Having a deck of cards for combat actually detracts from the overall experience. Maybe it's better on GBA? Overall, this card seems great as it appears to have universally helpful effects in boss fights. However, it loses points for being part of a bad combat system. Yawgmoth's Will - In a vacuum, this is just okay as a late game card to recycle one of your earlier threats and perhaps a land that's been destroyed, either by your own effects or someone else's. I assume that this is in fact a combo piece, in which case it might be completely broken, depending on the other cards that synergize with it. For example, if there are cards that cost less when cast from the graveyard or have bonus effects when cast from the graveyard. You could intentionally put a bunch of those cards in your graveyard with various trashing effects, then bring them out all on one turn with this card. If that's the case, this is likely very good. But in a vacuum, like if you were just drafting random cards it would be pretty terrible. Slippery Bogle Jubilee Sevenstar Dust Ace of Spades (Crazy 8s) --- The Artist Formerly Known as Hannyabal ... ??? Walky/Mike - As much as it would be neat to rank a card from a game that I can't look up the rules to or see any other cards from, it's way too difficult to say how good it is. Assuming 4 in all of its stats is a solid midgame statline, I think this card is probably good. The card text implies that it's sort of a 'must block or counter in some way or it destroys your board' which could take resources away from your opponents and allow your other threats to get through. Mike's effect seems good too, though I don't know how one might go about flipping the card between the two characters! Funny but Not Good Disco Inferno Bad Imakuni? Terrible Splendid Hair - Unlocking all the music tracks is a great effect. Reading up on it however, reveals that the cost is leaving the "Shampoo" card and the game running for 336 hours, which is far too great a cost! --- The Artist Formerly Known as Hannyabal ... Rose with Teeth - This is definitely a terrifying creature. Looks like it could eat small creatures or potentially even humans. No idea what sort of game this is from though, so I have no clue how good it is! Sorry! Ultimate Baseball Kid - This seems like the worst yugioh card thus far. I do notice that there's no 'once per turn' clause on this card, though maybe it's implied. Even if you can send 16 FIRE type monsters to the graveyard and OTK your opponent, that has to be one of the most difficult OTKs to achieve compared to some of the Yugioh nonsense I've seen. I guess maybe the idea here is to have 4 fire monsters on the field and this becomes a 4500 attack monster, at a cheaper cost than usual? Still seems underwhelming to me compared to other cards. Curse of the Tower - This card seems really bad in a co-op game. Maybe I'm missing that there's a whole subset of self-damage oriented buff cards that give you a reason to want to take damage in the first place. I also assume there's other cards that allow you to manipulate your rolls to give you a better chance at rolling the good effect (4-6) and not the bad effect (1-3). But if that's the case, why not just manipulate the roll to not take damage in the first place, and take that opportunity to replace this card with a different, better, and more consistent card in your build? Pyrofighter Magnus - After a quick look at the rules and a single starter deck, I think this card is bad. Even in a basic starterdeck, I already saw 3 cost 4000 blockers which both stay on the field and destroy this card. The only place for this card is in an aggro deck, but returning it to your hand at the end of your turn (assuming that that effect can't occur in the graveyard) is anti-tempo which an aggro deck doesn't want at all. I think at 1 cost 1000 power this is playable, but 3 is way too expensive if there's not a cheap way to give it unblockable somehow. Your opponent will just outvalue you by playing bigger cards that stick on the board. Inferno - This is another card I think is too expensive for the deck it probably goes in. When I think Red I think aggro, and this card does too many things for too high a cost for aggro to want it. In a traditional aggro deck, the only way I see to play this card is as a finisher, though there are surely more efficient ways to deal 6 to your opponent directly. This is also a symmetrical effect, so you'll destroy your entire board and then allow your opponent to play out whatever they want with the 7 mana you just spent destroying your own board. Maybe it could be the top end card (probably one copy, 2 copies MAX) in a full burn deck that plays very few creatures, but even then I think it's too expensive. If you're playing mixed colors, I assume every other class has access to better board clear than this. Varsword - Very very loosely familiar with MMBN as a concept but is this not just completely broken? Is there a downside other than a more challenging physical execution of the buttons to activate the attacks? Because having the choice between like 6 different attacks that pretty much covers whatever set of squares you need it to looks completely busted. Chapel - Well, unfortunately the wiki entry spoils that this card is extremely good in like, the 2nd sentence. But it's clear from the rulebook as to why - learning that the 'trash' effect removes those cards from the game entirely, thereby allowing you to thin your deck out by FOUR cards every time it's played, both removing cards you don't need and ensuring you'll see the best cards in your deck more often. Corvid Planners - I have no idea why it was so difficult for me to understand Root's rules. I've played it several times and won at least once (albeit not in several years). I think this card is decent, allowing you to move your units around the board without worrying if someone has controlled a particular area you need access too, or shoring up your units before a big fight for a particular territory. It might be slightly expensive for what it does, so I think you'd only pay the cost to craft it situationally, when you really need the ability to move to a particular clearing. Barber Pole - Okay, this game's ruleset is unbelievably convoluted, my god! I assumed the card did nothing and the ruleset didn't help to clarify that at all! So I had to go searching and found this: https://www.trekcc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3803 That companion card isn't bad, but in any game where you don't draw that card and do draw this one, you've effectively wasted a turn. Bah! General Store - I've heard of this game but never played. I think this card is pretty good though, though it may depend on the order of the players seats. Generally though, you're going to get to draw or deny the best card of the lot, and you know exactly what every other player gets - so even if someone else gets something good, you can at least play around it. Good specifically because you get to pick the best card for yourself. Half-Breed - I've never played Munchkin, but I don't even need to read the rules to know that this is broken. Simply put, it gives you the choice to either combine two races (which could have upsides and downsides), or become a strictly better version of a single race. As such - at worst - it's just a strictly better version of whatever the best existing race card is, but also gives you flexibility to test out other fun combinations. I think at 1 cost 1000 power this is playable, but 3 is way too expensive if there's not a cheap way to give it unblockable somehow. Your opponent will just outvalue you by playing bigger cards that stick on the board. I'm sure everyone here cares about the competitive intricacies of a game that died in English 17 years ago (/s) but this one is wrong. (At least assuming TCG format which only has the 12 sets that were released in English.) Haste on a 3 mana creature is already good in this game, and it returning to your hand is often a positive since it makes it harder for control decks to hit it with removal. It's true that it's bad against big blockers, but most good decks aren't running huge amounts of them because they need to run cards that pro-actively advance their own gameplan. Also in the most aggressive decks this is actually the top of their mana curve, so they don't really mind the tempo loss either since they have little else to do anyways. (though that isn't the only deck this is playable in) Anyway my nomination (from the same game): https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/duelmasters/images/5/56/Soulswap.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20211020010807 --- I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways. ...
