I'm technically peak millenial, having been born in December 1990, but all the traits I've read about have me relating to gen X the most, especially in the workplace, and all the praise that my bosses have given me over the years is something I think is because of gen X work ethic values.
Most of my childhood was spent on Xbox Live and Gamefaqs hanging out with Gen Xers. Could it be that I'm more gen X than millenial?
@ParanoidObsessive you are gen X and were also here on potD with me in those days. Maybe you can help

What is a "gen x" work value? Why are you buying into the idea that other generations have low work "value?"

Like he's a literal millennial that he perceives has good work ethic and he's still attributing it to Gen X lol

It doesn't get much more Gen X than that.

That's neither born around 2000 or coming of age around 2000, I will never get this "millennial" moniker.

You don't think pre-teen ages are "coming of age?" How old do you think someone is when they're "coming of age?" That phrase is related to puberty.

I think you just have a misunderstanding of that phrase. That phrase means the transition from child to being more adult. The phrase arises from the process of puberty. When you're going through puberty, you're "coming of age." It doesn't have to do with when you turn 18 or when you're legally considered an adult.

Google says formally becoming an adult.

Legal Adult (18) to Mental Adult (~25) feels about right for that

Yeah I just pay attention to the legal age of a adult (18). Mentality is different for people regardless of age.

Okay, well you're not right and you are never open to learning.

This is what Google says. Not what you're saying. The phrase originated from puberty not legal age of majority.

Let's see:
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/coming-of-age

Someone's coming of age is the time when that person legally becomes an adult and is old enough to vote.

the time when someone matures emotionally, or in some other way

the time when something starts to become successful:
the coming of age of democracy in the country

So it turns out both are correct.

not sure this is worth being pedantic about considering the cited google summary says "shit varies based on society dude"

the nature of adulthood has changed massively over the past couple hundred years because kids used to be considered adult enough to consent to marriage at like 12-15, so yeah, puberty would fit there. but society and language evolve over time. both definitions can be fitting depending on the individual's personal growth and shift into independence

"Coming of age" means a few different things, but in the context of looking at the era in which you "came of age" as far as defining generations go, it's defined mostly on the basis of what you experienced in the years during which you were pinning down what it means to be an adult. That means adolescence, mostly, which for people born between the mid-80's and late 90's falls in the mid-late 2000's.

In practice, "millennial" doesn't have a particularly solid chronological definition. It's broadly used for pretty much anyone for whom the widespread use of the internet was a formative influence, but that mostly grew up before social media in the modern sense took off (particularly influencing being a viable career option).

Gen X work ethic is slacking cuz you don't care... millennials were more up-strung by ' i need to work or i'll die!!!' mentality.

In practice it is mostly an insult aimed at those with a certain work mindset (and avocado obsession), right?

Also true. "Millennial" as an insult is roughly equivalent to "I want to insult you but I can't actually articulate a reason for that, so I'm just going to blame your age," regardless of what the person's age actually is.

I'd rather identify as an early Zoomer to further distance myself from those useless inert mossy rocks. These days the younger you are the shittier the economy is and the harder you have to work to pay your bills, which makes you a more respectable person imo.

I worked for 16 hours one day, 8 hours the next only to do some yard work for money afterwards, and every waking hour I have I spend learning a marketable skill or dozing off in my chair from lack of sleep. I work out every day as well on top of that. I somehow had time to find to get lectured by a Gen X'er ass on how lazy I was irl, but I stayed reserved, because I'm not an ape, and those things can get violent with only eye contact. He goes on about every single thing I did to ruin his life, because he ingested too much lead paint as a kid, and his dad beat him good to teach him what was right.

Anyway all I'm saying is if you relate to them then I probably don't like you. Old people can't stand the reality that they're the ones who are lazy brats.

The experience you described was my experience with baby boomers.
When I got my first job at 16, my boomer bosses were all terrible people and I hated how grumpy they always were and nothing was ever good enough.
My gen X bosses were always more laid back and as long as you worked hard they would be nice. Those were the people I looked up to and learned from.
