Depends on what specifically makes it that way. If the battle system is boring, but the game around it is good it's tolerable. But if the battle system is slow, (Legend of Dragoon for example) I have to really like the game around it to trudge through it. If the battle system is nonsensical, (Disgaea for example), eventually it will grate on me and I'll have to really push through to finish. I dragged myself through to the end of the first game, and never touched it or the series again. I've been having serious problems with issue #3 when playing Unicorn Overlord. The damage/combat calculations are even more wildly variable than Disgaea. --- Never underestimate the power of stupidity in numbers. ~War13104 Never stoop to the level of idiots. Normally I will default to Normal in all games but, having played through the Kiryu saga of Yakuza in the last few months... Yakuza 0: Normal all the way through. Kiwami: Normal til about 50% of the way through then Easy to speed it up. Kiwami 2: Normal all the way through. Yakuza 3: Skipped game entirely. Yakuza 4: Started on easy to soldier through about 50% of the game then skipped the rest. Yakuza 5: Normal all the way through. Yakuza 6: Normal all the way. The combat in all except K2 and Y6 were pretty mediocre, but enjoyable enough in short bursts. 3 and 4 were a disaster, though. Had to "play" by just looking up what happened in the story on Youtube. History shows that when this happens I'll just get more aggressive with cheap tactics to get through stuff faster rather than lowering the difficulty but I don't have a lot of things that this actually applied to in my life Closest thing I can recall are like FFVIII (started just spamming limits all the time to end fights faster) and MGS3 (not really "combat" but I found the sneaking/camo system tiresome so I did the tail half of the game on my first playthrough just running through areas with splitter camo shotgunning enemies that saw me) and DMC2 (just started shooting everything cause it was faster) But yeah wouldn't ever lower the difficulty on any game. Might increase the difficulty if possible to see if it helps. Will say "mediocre" to me doesn't mean "bad." In the case of bad combat I'll just stop playing. --- No problem! Lopen posted... Might increase the difficulty if possible to see if it helps. This has helped me in some cases, especially in series I'm more familiar with. It doesn't fall into the category of games being 'mediocre' per se, but with Fire Emblem for example... at this point, I'm so experienced with the tactics and meta strategy of the series... if I play a game on Normal mode I tend to get extremely bored because it's not engaging my brain enough, but if I turn up the difficulty to Hard or even better Lunatic, I can have a lot more fun as I'm being genuinely challenged. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png ... I've also started turning the game to easy just depending on how much the game expects me to engage with side content. In Trails of Cold Steel III, I realized that I was dreading doing sidequests, as they have no voice acting and are frequently very dull story-wise, but I could also tell the game expects you to do them in order to get strong enough for the main bosses. So to compensate, I turned the difficulty down and skipped the dull sidequests. I knew it was the right decision when I still managed to die to one of the fights in the final dungeon. --- Come watch me on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/gameryogi azuarc beat me. ...
