Rules:

  1. Rate each character on a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. Anything above 10 gets rounded down to a 10, and anything below a 1 gets rounded up to a 1.
  2. Anything beyond one decimal point will be rounded accordingly: .04 and below will be rounded down, .05 and up will be rounded up.
  3. You may grade on any criteria you like.
  4. Consider the character's appearances throughout the entire Ace Attorney series.
  5. You can rate characters from previous topics if you miss a topic.
  6. On a day with multiple characters, clearly label which rating applies to which characters.
  7. On a day with multiple characters, you may skip a character to rate.
  8. Pretty much every character from Ace Attorney will be rated. The schedule will go in chronological game order in the West (with AAI2 being right after AAI just for consistency). When a character debuts and gets a major speaking role, they will show up (so Trucy appearing for a moment in 4-1 doesn't count as a 4-1 character). Major characters get their own day and minor characters are all ranked at once. All extremely minor characters (background, animals, mascots, and jury) will be rated on the final day.
  9. The "roles" listed are: Defense, Rival, Assistant, Detective, Judge, Victim, Defendant, Culprit, Witness, Background, Animal, Mascot, and Jury. Sorry, I'm not pointing out accomplices.

Previous Results:

Phoenix Wright - 9.7 (27 votes)
The Judge - 9.4 (19 votes)
Mia Fey - 7.7 (23 votes)
Larry Butz - 5.6 (19 votes)

Mostly everyone agreed that the Judge is a core part to the Ace Attorney style and that he's a welcome presence. Some wanted him to just judge, some wanted more of him, but he's universally well-liked.

Name: Winston Payne
Game Appearances: AA, JFA, T&T, AJ
Roles: Rival
Profile (Debut): [1-1] The prosecutor for the first case. Lacks presence. Generally bad at getting his points across.
Profile (Conclusion): [4-1] The prosecuting attorney. For all his experience, he lacks a certain presence...

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/e/e5fdf3c5.png
Name: Cindy Stone
Game Appearances: AA
Roles: Victim
Profile: The victim in 1-1. A model, she lived in an apartment by herself.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/5/5b5dbea4.png
Name: Frank Sahwit
Game Appearances: AA, AAI2
Roles: Culprit, Witness
Profile (Debut): [1-1] Discovered Ms. Stone's body. Newspaper salesman who saw Larry flee the scene.
Profile (Conclusion): [E2-2] Training to become a pet groomer. Discovered the body. His bracelet is broken.

My Rating:

Payne: 7/10.
Stone: 2/10.
Sahwit: 5/10.

Payne's probably a 4/10 but his 3-1 appearance is so good that it boosts him a lot. They make good use of him such as him beating Tigre in 3-1 and his cameos in the Investigation games.

Stone's a victim. She's not the worst victim. I like that she's not entirely innocent, but not entirely awful.

Sahwit's nothing important, but similar to my thoughts on 1-1, he does a really good job of giving you a taste of what AA could be. He has a really memorable breakdown and it was nostalgic seeing him in E2-2.

Easy Vote Form:

Payne:
Stone:
Sahwit:

Winston Payne - 6.5/10

Most of his score comes from 3-1, where he's great, as well as the bonkers 3-3 intro where he appears to beat Phoenix. He's a pretty big nothing in the rest of his appearances, but that's also the point.

Cindy Stone - 2.5/10

Entirely for the Cinder Block joke.

Frank Sahwit - 5/10

He's basically the Glass Joe of the series. He's memorable for the toupee toss and not much else...until he shows back up in E2-2, where he's actually one of the most charming parts of the case.

You should include an easy vote form for these.

Payne: 6
Cindy: 5
Frank: 5

I dont know if we should include actual non-characters who are just corpses.

Great suggestion! Added.

There's definitely some interesting victims, even the one-off ones. Stone's not one of them, but Meraktis is one of the better parts of 4-2, for instance!

Payne: 7/10

Mostly for rookie killer Payne. He's kinda whatever in his other appearances but he's a show-stealer in 3-1, and I love that for him.

Sahwit: 5/10

He's kind of iconic, I guess! His appearance in E2-2 is a lot more fun.

I'm not going to bother rating Cindy Stone because I don't really know how to, but I think it's interesting to think about her. If you really meditate on her existence in this series long enough it becomes weird. She's THE first character to appear in the entire series (technically you see Sahwit's hand first but eh), and she gets the honor of being the first victim ever! And she's just a random person who was Larry's girlfriend once. Larry doesn't grow from this experience at all and never mentions her ever again, nor does she appear or is made reference to ever again, which is kind of amazing because damn well every character or random thing in the first game has been made reference to again at some point. She's simultaneously one of the least important characters in the AA franchise, while also occupying this space of the high honor of being one of its first characters. I don't know, it's just super weird.

Payne: 6/10. A staple, I like him, but he's not actually especially good.
Stone: N/A. Not really a character?
Sahwit: 5/10. Fine villain.

Payne: 5/10 It's kinda fun kicking his ass at the beginning of each game but he himself is kinda whatever
Stone: 2/10 Seems like she kinda took advantage of Larry and other men and otherwise we know basically nothing about her
Sahwit: 5/10 Another fairly whatever character to me. I'm honestly probably being easy on him for nostalgia's sake.

Payne - 7
Stone - 3
Sawhit - 6

Sawhit and Payne are bumped heavily by later appearances. Payne is a real star in T&T and I love the almost unexpected return of Sawhit in E2-2. Just something inherently funny about being literally surrounded by dangerous criminals and out pops ..... the first antagonist of the franchise. Peak.

Ranking victims can be hard, but I'm determined. I wouldn't say she's not a character, barely a character, yes, but the games are neat in that they usually give us insight on the character who died ... That being said, it does feel weird to put an underdeveloped character below someone who actively squicks me like Ben .... Anyway she's ok I guess. Perfectly fine choice for a first victim.

I've been playing Ace Attorney in Spanish to improve my Spanish speaking skills. Unfortunately, everyone keeps their English name (though, "Cinder Block" is changed to Cindy Nero!)

It's funny that Sahwit's first testimony is 10 lines long. That might be the longest testimony outside of Atmey's purposefully long testimony in 3-2.
