it's happening less these days but when websites or businesses force users to download an app kind of grinds my gears. Want to redeem your reward points? Use the app. Want a discount on our shitty overpriced fast food? Use the app. Want to not deal with the worst UI in history on our website? Use the app.

I'm surprised GameFAQs didn't go the way of the app yet, but I guess that's because SBAllen clings on to the "old" style of internet

With an app, you are essentially selling your privacy. In return for reduced prices, the company gets your demographic info, marketing info, preferences, insights into your habits (How often do you browse their menu? Do you do it just before bed? Do you sit on a cheap option for an above-average number of seconds before adding a more expensive option?). But that's not necessarily a bad thing, if you understand it going in. In fact, maybe you really want your "voice" to be heard so more products are tuned for your interests.

But at the same time, every app you install reduces your security and degrades the overall experience of using your device.

Yeah, I hate it too. I got some TV light bar and the "instructions" was just a single square with a QR code that said "if you want to install and operate this, install the app". Fuck no, how about you just put a remote in there instead?

They were talking about doing "Happy Hour" pricing at certain times just like many restaurants do. The point the person being interviewed was trying to make is that the new digital signs they are getting could be updated to reflect that pricing at the time rather than how "Happy Hour" is handled at places like Taco Bell where there's just a sign on the window that says "Happy Hour 2-5 PM drink specials" or whatever it says on it. Their main mistake was trying to be fancy and call it "dynamic pricing" which is something most people would not understand and allowed for all of the outrage clickbait articles because many thought that meant they would increase prices. If they had just said "Happy Hour" from the beginning, it would have been much easier for people to understand and harder to spin as something bad. It doesn't matter now because I think they aren't even going to do it anymore after the controversy.

i've been seeing QR codes popping up more, that link to apps. Like really?

I just stayed at a resort where to get service you either had to download the app, or pick up the phone, dial 0, ask to be redirected by the operator who may or may not be busy, to get sent to the correct place and try to communicate what you wanted, which they might not understand because of the language barrier as they speak spanish. Never staying there again.

On a similar note it grinds my gears everything requires an account with them. Wanna apply for this job make an account

Like I literally can't apply for one company anymore because I did one time and now I can't get into my account. Try another email and it says something like this person already has an account. How am I supposed to keep up with passwords to accounts I haven't logged into in years

I actually did have the McD app for a while, until it deleted all my points. They were useless anyway, I guess, but it still annoyed me.

Honestly, the most annoying thing about the McD app is the insistence on it. You go through the drive thru and the first thing you hear is "will you be using the app today"

I dunno why that frustrates me so much but it does.

I hate it if it's something likely to be a one time thing as said like applying for a job. If I leave a company it's unlikely I wanna go back

Hard Agree when it comes to most restaurants/bars.

No, downloading an app and going through a 6-step ordering process and adding my bank details is not easier than asking the bartender for a beer, ffs.

It's to make more money.

They track your every move, show every ad guaranteed, and development is much simpler on an app vs a website.

I hate the Kroger digital coupons and thus the app. You have to grab the app, link it to your already existing discount card, then clip the coupon in the app to get a discount when you use your discount card at the register. Why so many steps for a discount that is still tied to the damn discount card you have to swipe at the register anyway? Not to mention the digital coupons are often "use up to 5 times" but they don't say that is has to be in that specific transaction or you can't use it again. Garbage app, garbage usage.

I had to buy a router today because by old one died. Closest place was Walmart. Checked the price, figured it would be quicker to just go in and get it. No sale or coupon listed.

"That's the app price" they say, as I stare at the router, $60 more than the Internet says it is.

Fuck all that noise.
