Most people agreed on the general ideas. The case does interesting things and people generally liked the Mason System (though, not everyone!). People disagreed on how to rate it. Some rated it high for what it does well, most rated it low for the damage it did to the series.

Summary:

Edgeworth returns to his office only to find it the scene of a murder! And not just any murder, the murder of a detective!

Main Characters: Miles Edgeworth, Dick Gumshoe
Other Characters: Maggey Byrde, Buddy Faith, Jacques Portsman

My Rating: 2/10. Wow, that is...a small cast. But it's fine. Edgeworth's office is a neat location and an okay introduction to the AAI mechanics...even though Little Thief is all the way in E1-3 for some reason. Portsman's a fun culprit; though, if you don't like him, I can see this being a 1/10 case. Edgeworth remaining cool with a gun to his back is a solid Edgeworth moment.

I kinda like this case! It doesn't have a lot to it, but Portsman's great, and the extended importance it has on the rest of the game is pretty neat.

I flip-flopped between 6 and 7 but I decided I really want to go to bat for this case because I think it's Actually Good and an overlooked gem in the franchise. The intro with Edgeworth confronting the mysterious figure is incredibly badass. Edgeworth's office is a super fun location to examine and solve a murder in. I like how small in scope it is and that it doesn't involve a bunch of characters - it's a very intimate little murder mystery. And some of the aspects of the murder are just extremely cool - I love the twist of there being two different gunmen who shot two different bullets and I love figuring out how that affected the crime scene. Really fun case that doesn't overstay its welcome imo - I wish I could say that about the rest of the game!

5.5/10

I like the things it does well. Portsman is a great starter villain, and the twist that there were two visitors was really cool (and that Portsman realized it before Edgeworth and used it for his alibi). This is also notable for being the only time we actually get to walk around freely in Edgeworth's office in either game.

But trying to frame both Gumshoe and Maggey in the same case feels cheap, and there's just not a lot else to the case besides Portsman (and the office). It's a good case overall though! There's just not enough to it for me to rate it higher.

I actually liked this case and it might be my favorite in the game. I think because it's shorter than the other cases. AAI1 to me is mostly not bad everything just drags on to the point where I start to lose interest.

wow i thought i was going to be one of the people carrying this one. this is just above average to me (and the lowest i would probably go, based on my track record so far holy shit i look on the bright side of things) which i guess is perfectly fine for a tutorial!

i like the setting, something ill be saying a lot with this game. its a tight little intimate scenario and the two gunmen was brilliant. it is a little boring to replay, unfortunately, having known the game, and unfortunately doesn't have the story highs of 3-1 and 4-1. but still a good promising start.

portsman good, i love how he's kind of a foil to edgeworth. how far has edgeworth come since pw:aa! i remember being sad about buddy dying because i thought his design was cute. you know what i still think that :I

also .... the brief payne cameo is absolutely hilarious.

I'll bump my score up from a 2/10 to a 4/10, mainly because I don't dislike anything about this case...I just don't really remember much about it at all.

Case 1s are always the most difficult to rate.

It's definitely not terrible, just... alright to a fault. Less of a slog than almost every case that would follow it, so I suppose I give it props for adequate pacing in a game that often fails in that regard. A bit disappointed this is all we got from Maggey given Gumshoe's ascension to a main, but it is what it is. Just wish we had seen her in a context that didn't have her accused of murder for once.

Not about this case, and sorry for rehashing AJ, but I was thinking about the various Like a Dragon games as I do on a daily basis. And it occurred to me that if they rewrote the plot to have Phoenix leave the courtroom as a self-inflicted punishment a la how RGG wrote Yagami, they really could have headed off a lot issues.

I really enjoyed Judgement and Yagami. I felt the same way; though, I don't know if you can exactly bring it to AA since they both are going for different tones.

I definitely think Takumi went with the conclusion of "I want AA to switch over to the jury system. How do I get there?" and then worked backwards from it to get...what we got in AJ.

This case is pretty alright but AAI is just rough. And I dislike, like, 80% of the character design. AAI2 is better in that regard.
