I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

Steel ties for the lowest votals thus far, which is a shame because it wasn't a blowout like some of the other low-scoring generations. Gen III (which is not a bad choice, mind you) managed to eke out the victory after being tied with the runner up late in the voting process. Gen VI, meanwhile, comes up short on winning a generation once again, but secures one of the stronger wild card spots to bump Rock out of the wild card process.

For today's contest, we finish the main set of polls with the biggest typing, really. Water has always been a major typing in Pokemon, so much so that I couldn't even put the word "Line" alongside some of the fully-evolved Pokemon listed. So if your NFE faves aren't included in the poll, I do apologize. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Note: I will not be considering things like Dialga/Palkia's form changes in Gen VIII, as those are still technically the same in the way Giratina's form change was back in Gen IV.

Overall it's probably Gen II but Gen I Water having my all-time favorite Pokemon (Squirtle) I feel obligated to vote that.

Gen 7 is probably the best here. Only one that sucks (Brionne), a couple mediocre ones (Bruxish and Fini) and the rest are great.

gen 7 is the most consistently good. the only overwhelming fully evolved dud is bruxish and at least its INTERESTING. an interesting disaster, but interesting nonetheless.

gen 1 has a lot of options and is solid across the board honestly
gen 2 has a lot of options but is definitely weaker across the board honestly
gen 3 is really good and also surskit is my favourite pokemon so uh
gen 4 is also really really good honestly, much love for many of its slept on options like lumineon and mantyke
gen 5 (lol 6) isn't all there sadly but some of them i'm a big fan of (eg. carracosta)
gen 6 (for real this time) ... it's not a good sign when i like volcanion the most of these options
gen 7 has the best starter line of the generation and surskit 2.0 but past that i'm not a fan
gen 8 is honestly really strong, besides the fossils and the OP bear i dig all of them
gen 9 has the best water starter final evo ever and some other solid options, but the paradox mons and wugtrio line weigh it down

My favorite type! It's close between gens 1 and 3 but 3 adds so many weirdo sea creatures that I have to give it the nod.

Gen 3 supremacy

Has the best water legendary (Kyogre) and one of my overall all time favorites (Wailord, whose sheer size makes it pretty unforgettable)

Huh, I really wasn't expecting this much diversity in votes. I fully expected a Gen I stomp, and I would've been on board for it.

Squirtle line, Starmie, Gyarados, Psyduck line, Horsea line, Seel, Tentacruel, Poliwhirl/wrath, Vaporeon, Cloyster, Slowpoke line, Krabby line, fossils, Lapras... literally every line except for Goldeen has at least one good member.

Like there's a plenty of good Water Pokemon throughout all generations, but none of them individually have nearly as many.

I > II > IX > VI > VII > III > VIII > V > IV

I feel like this is one of them where gen 1 is actually the strongest though!

Gen 3 is solid but I do not like the starting line at all and there are a couple of real duds on the list that hurt things.

It's also one of the biggest gens so if you value quantity at all it nearly always has an advantage.

True that. Case in point, I think gen 1 has it for water, but when a couple people voted gen 1 for steel that's basically shitposting lol

As someone who has played pretty extensively up through Gen VI and knows 7 and 8 well enough to at least properly judge them, nothing hits like 1 and 2 for me and I voted for those two gens in the vast majority of the polls despite knowing most of the other generations well enough to say "Yeah, most of these guys just don't do it for me." That being said I also apparently have wacky, unpopular opinions regarding generation quality. I'm in the apparent minority who loathes Gen V and that's just totally independent from anything I feel about prior generations. I'm just either neutral or negative on well over half of the Pokemon from that generation and didn't have fun playing the games. I'm also in the apparent minority who loves Gen VI. Even though I can't recall voting for it in any poll here, I just had (and still have) a lot of fun playing X/Y.

Gen VIII - Sobble is great but I don't like Inteleon. Cramorant is funny but the fossils really drag it down and I don't really like any of the other Pokemon.

Gen VII - Awful starter and a bunch of blah. Golisopod is the only Pokemon here I like at all.

Gen IV - Piplup is great but Empoleon is kinda disappointing. Floatzel and Gastrodon lines are solid enough to put it above the bottom two.

Gen VI - I'm a big fan of Froakie and all its evolutions, but I don't care for the megas, Clawitzer is only okay, and everything else is no good.

Gen V - Samurott line, Jellicent, and Swanna are great, the fossil turtles are good, and everything else ranges from bad (monkeys) to neutral (toads).

Gen II - Very strong lineup with Totodile (my favorite first form starter), Lanturn, Politoed, and Slowking. I wouldn't call any of these bad, either.

Gen IX - Could be higher with a better starter; actually, I like Quaxly a lot but Quaquaval is terrible. Palafin, Veluza, Dondozo, Wiglett line, and Iron Bundle are all fantastic.

Gen I - There's a lot of good here: Squirtle, Poliwhirl, Slowbro, Seadra, Starmie, Cloyster, Lapras, Vaporeon, Gyarados, and Kabutops are all good to great. There's also a lot of bloat, though. Dewgong, Seaking, Kingler, and Tentacruel I could live without. Still, the sheer volume of good Pokemon make it hard to leave Gen 1 out of the top two

Gen III - Spheal and Sharpedo are my top two water types, so I was always leaning Gen III, but Ludicolo, Corphish, Wailmer, and Whiscash are all amazing as well. I wouldn't be surprised if over half of my top 10 Water types came from this generation. I also like Pelipper a lot, even if it can be really annoying to fight, and Kyogre is one of the better legendaries. The starter isn't great (Mudkip is good though) and the Clamperl evolutions suck but not enough to drop this from the top spot imo

II and III give it the old college try, but this is one time where it's appropriate to be a Genwunner. It really does have the classic lineup with no filler or fluff, a lot of strong contenders and nothing really offensive. II has more of my all-time favorites and III has my second favorite starter line from basic to final evolution, but they both also have entire lines I just don't care for to hold them back. I has no such detriment so it's gotta be Gen I. As a side note I feel bad for V here. It has Dewott and it doesn't even get a real spot in the poll. ;(
