Rules:

  1. Rate each case on a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. Anything above 10 gets rounded down to a 10, and anything below a 1 gets rounded up to a 1.
  2. Anything beyond one decimal point will be rounded accordingly: .04 and below will be rounded down, .05 and up will be rounded up.
  3. You may grade on any criteria you like.
  4. You can rate cases from previous topics if you miss a topic.

Previous Results:

The First Turnabout (1-1) - 4.8 (21 votes)

1-1 almost gets the exact middle, which seems appropriate. It was praised for being a pretty clean tutorial case and a solid way to get someone prepared for the rest of AA.

There was discussion about how to rate these. I decided to keep it open-ended. I'll continue to vote relative to the AA series. Since LS rated on two different criteria, I counted their 7/10 vote since they seem to prefer absolute voting over relative voting.

My rating: 4.5/10. It's Takumi's first designed AA case and it shows. It has really lofty ambitions, but the execution is lacking. This might be the most simple murder in the series. Mia's death is a shocker and all the mainstays are introduced well. I used to really dislike Mia's takedown of White for partially being easily solvable (the receipt) and also not solvable at all (the list of names), but I have really grown to appreciate it. I see it as more of Phoenix's arc. In the beginning, he's still a novice and is unable to pin the crime down. By the end, he doesn't even need help and is instead mentoring others.

Always felt like this case gets too much hate. Mia's death is a great shocker right out of the gate, and Redd White is this odd combo of threatening and ridiculous (ridiculosity, some might call it) that the series manages to pull off so well.

The ending is an anticlimax, sure, but it felt right for Mia to take him down beyond the grave. Plus, I love the quick pan after White's confession from the Judge's shocked look, to Edgeworth bent over his desk in exasperation, to Phoenix's embarrassed grin, unable to believe he just won.

It's a weird case. Mia's death is an awesome, shocking hook for the series to start off with, and the series in general starts to find its groove here in terms of writing. I really like the development of Phoenix and Maya's relationship. But the murder mystery is deeply lame, Redd White is such a lame villain for the position he has, and the ending to the case sucks, not because Mia comes back (that seemed dumb at the time but no longer does) but because Redd White giving up because of a list of names is silly and feels unearned.

As far as rating on a 1-10 scale goes, you take whatever people decide to give you, whatever their criteria is. It's gonna be subjective, that's just how it is

I'm not actually sure it's better than the tutorial case even ignoring the bonus that I give the tutorial case for being a great tutorial case. It's a bit more interesting but it takes a lot more time to play out and I'm not sure it's worth it.

It doesn't offend me but there are a lot better cases out there.

7/10.

The villain is kind of lame, but it does introduce you to Edgeworth, Gumshoe, and Maya!

I think there's unique value in 1-2 because it's the only time you truly get to see "dirty" Edgeworth (because E1-4 screwed it up).

I give both 1-1 and 1-2 a lot of leeway because they're still doing a bunch of game building. Yeah the ending and the culprit suck, but I feel if you went straight from 1-1 into an actual unknown mystery it could have been disorienting. The gameplay build in going from "extremely obvious" to "extremely obvious with an investigation section" to "not obvious at all with an investigation section" is important.

Edgeworth wasn't dirty in 3-4?

Does a lot of cool things, but it's just not a case I ever look forward to replaying. April May and the bellboy both feel like the early blueprints of what the quintessential witness would be; that kind of unique Ace Attorney wackiness that makes every character so memorable even when you don't particularly like them. Redd White was too ambitious a villain for such an early case imo, and the actual mystery is kind of blah, but he is very entertaining.

I kinda forgot Grossberg was here too. He mostly exists to hype Redd White's power and tight control even more, which didn't really pay off at all.

Oh right, forgot about 3-4.

I think 1-2 gives you a better look at it because it's a full case. 3-4 Edgeworth doesn't pull anything like the "updated" autopsy report...!

The First Turnabout: 5
Turnabout Sisters: 6.5

April May and Redd White are fun, as well as the mainstay supporting cast. The case itself is okay and I think it's a good enough escalation from the first case.

I have always found it really funny that for as much reputation as Edgeworth has for the 'updated autopsy report', that's literally a thing he only ever does once. 1-2 is the only time we see Edgeworth's darker side in real time - he gets so immediately cut down to size by the witnesses in 1-3 that we never really see it again. It's kind of a shame - one of the things 1-2 does incredibly well is just how QUICKLY it establishes Edgeworth as a character, that by the end of the case everyone who plays it is like, "he's objecting again? That's classic Edgeworth!"

That's what makes 1-1 and 1-2 so difficult for me to rate. They're weak, by comparison to the amazing heights that this series reaches pretty consistently starting immediately after this case, but they're undeniably effective at establishing the series.

I had played part of JFA first so what happened to Mia wasn't a surprise. Alright case overall, I suppose.

7/10. I'm giving it a lot of points for being the introduction to Maya, Gumshoe, and Edgeworth, but the case-exclusive characters aren't the best and the ending is anticlimactic.

I do think it's kind of odd that Grossberg selling out Mia's mom never comes up in 3-1 or 3-4. I know it's not the focus of the cases, but a side comment from Mia or something would've been nice.
