WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR! It's one of the best games ever made!

I didn't play it until I got a DS. But I was poor back in the day and didn't get to play a lot of games, and also hadn't really gotten into RPG's yet.

I am not sure a current audience could handle the slow pace of chrono trigger.
A group a long long time ago did try to make a 3d remake of the game, but it was obviously shut down by lawyers. Japanese companies are especially stupid about these things and instead of hiring these people and buying and finishing their game and making it official, they destroyed it and sat on the IP.

Where is the best place to play it?

Well, if I learned from TV Tropes back in the day it's that nothing is popular or influential unless every man, woman, and child experienced it--if you think it was important, you're wrong and it's just your fan myopia.

The DS version is very good. It has the cutscenes from the PlayStation version, extra game content and bonus content like artwork and promotional material, and can be played entirely by either traditional or touch controls.

Kids these days have an attention span of a gnat... and it's not as easily accessible anyway I don't think.

Theres an official phone version for $10.

Some people (myself included) just don't remember who they liked best, so just went with that option.

I just have difficulty getting into JRPGs. Funnily enough, I own the PS1 version. I'll try to play it again sometime..

thats the worst version of the game, stay away from that one, the load times are really bad

Because it was true.

But it's also true today.

Studies have shown attention spans getting shorter for decades now.

Arguably, it started with the advent of TV and has been snowballing ever since as technology gives us more and more data streams constantly fighting for space in our brain. Each generation now seems to have slightly less attention span than the one before it, because each generation has so much more to pay attention to.

Honestly, it's pretty overrated. It's a great game, certainly, and I fully understand why it was such a big deal when it came out and the extent to which it has influenced the genre, but aside from the fact that it did it all 29 years ago it doesn't really do anything to make it stand out from other turn-based JRPGs. Well worth playing, but not "If you haven't played this you've never tasted true gaming greatness!" territory.

DS version is objectively the best. Fast load times, along with the new content and none of the graphical issues of the PC version. Also the most accessible probably.

load times in ps1 emulator were instant. Pretty sure that's objectively the best version. Also runs on pretty much all phones, mobile devices, PCs.

That's actually sad, they never got to experience this masterpiece.

it may not sound bad, but having to sit at a blank screen for an extra 3-4 seconds every time you want to open the menu in a JRPG is really fucking annoying

Actually, Im speaking from actually playing the PS1 discs. If its just a ps1 emulator it might not be as bad

Gotta admit the soundtrack is fire though.

The soundtrack is indeed top tier. But then that's just Mitsuda in general, and I'd still probably rank CT's soundtrack behind his contributions to the Xenoblade series (though a direct comparison isn't entirely fair with 20+ years between them).

I have to admit, the ones who do love it, love it incredibly :) its pretty personal. Im not as forceful about it as TC but I remember going insanely hard for it one year during the best game ever contest.

according to my son the top 5 snes rpgs are

1. secret of mana
2. chrono trigger
3. super mario rpg
4. final fantasy 4
5. illusion of gaia

It's a bit of a tricky one to deal with in the context of "best game ever." When it came out, it was indeed amazing, and since then it's had a pretty huge influence on JRPGs in general. 29 years is a long time, though, and because of the influence it's had a lot of what set it apart from the crowd in 1995 has now become fairly common and unremarkable. To that end, it deserves recognition for how good it was back in the day, but that doesn't necessarily translate to thinking it's a more enjoyable game to play compared to anything else available today.

That's part of why I tend to shy away from picking "favourite" games: It pretty much never actually means that my favourite games are ones I'd rather be playing over anything else in a given moment (given how variable tastes can be moment to moment), and if I'm instead basing it on what impact it's had on my life, that doesn't necessarily translate into a useful recommendation because a huge part of that depends on when I first experienced it.

In this particular case, I'm speaking as somebody who didn't play the game until it came out on the DS, nearly 15 years after it came out. At that point, I found it to be a great game, but nothing really outstanding compared to anything else I could play at the time. I had a good time, but I wouldn't even consider calling it one of my favourite games ever.

but it is not anywhere great anymore, yes, because so many different titles have come out that have drastically improved upon what made it so good.

it deserves recognition for that, absolutely, but retrospectively it is not actually very good.

look at cell phones. was the first one good?

fuck no it wasn't. and you can do that for everything. but actual good things that were good then and are good now, don't really apply to video games like it does, say, movies, or books.

and to completely contrast that, some things that were good back then and aren't that great these days are tools. my pair of pliers from like the 1980s could withstand being thrown into the fucking sun, whereas you buy a pair today and it just falls apart after the first use.

Nice troll reply. This proves 100% you are just dropping troll bait . I doubt you even play RPG's to be honest. You just said FF8, FF13, and FF15 the driving simulator are a better gameplay experience than Chrono Trigger. It's not even up to debate about Chrono Cross, everyone knows that game has the worst battle mechanics ever and it's an awful sequel that effectively killed the franchise.

People can have different opinions from you without trolling. If anything, demanding that people put genuine effort into defending their opinions that differ from yours is itself trolling, far more so than anything else that's happened in this topic.

Really? 8 Where you had to avoid using magic and GFs, and 9 where the battle was so slow you might have 8 attacks queued up?

I don't like jrpgs and never have so I doubt I would like it.

i think 9's mid personally but it's a much higher mid than CT

8's just really fucking fun because of triple triad junction minmaxing shenanigans. i havent even beat the game but it was really funny how fast i hit 9999hp
