People are saying it might be one of the best games ever made. Everyone is saying that it's pretty much what DD could have been if it had the resources and dev time it needed.

Ngl I thought this year was gonna suck for games with how Sony and MS are really shitting the bed (and Nintendo basically digging the Switch's grave) but looks like it's gonna be pretty nice

There seems to be a lot of talk about people saying best game ever made these past few years. That isnt a bad thing. That means the quality of games have shot up depending where you look anyway. I need to keep my eye on it

What specifically are they saying? From the few videos I've seen it looks like the first game but more. What's making it the greatest game ever?

There's a preview on GI and IGN that are pretty positive. A lot of the comments are from gaming journalists on Twitter that went to the Capcom event and I'm on mobile so it's a pain in the ass to link all of them lol

But a lot of them are saying the last time they felt this way during a game preview was for Elden Ring, and before that BotW. So that's pretty high praise imo

Yeah I find the gaming doomerism very annoying. Gaming has been great lately, last year was fantastic.

This is great to hear, DD 1 was a great game that I put like 200 hours into. Capcom has been nailing it these past few years

Seems like you can just play 2. The MC in 2 starts the game out with amnesia so you'll learn of the lore with the character.

Also, from what I played of DD (3/4 of the game just about) there really isn't much going on in the story that couldn't be explained in a paragraph or two.

I've been hearing some pretty worrying stuff about performance. Uncapped FPS that averages below 30 on PS5 with no performance mode. All of that is bad news.

Can I ask what made the first game great? I played the first hour or so of Dark Arisen and then got kind of bored once I did the main few quests in the first castle/beach town.

I'm keen to give the 2nd game a fairer try but dont know why everyone thought the first game was great.

You could use other players big titty pawns and download them online and have them in your party, I think was the massive appeal of it.

Meh. Ill believe it when I see it. Dark Arisen was fun but the open world was laughably barren and the story was passable at best. Dont get me wrongI had fun, but its a far cry from being the most amazing game everrr!!!!1111 that people love to make it out to be.

I hope this does well but im not holding my breath, personally.

I hope Capcom makes it a big, self contained experience with expansions coming later to offer new gameplay content and not just cosmetics and shortcuts.

I mean... there's still hope they could be chasing some of that Tears of the Kingdom/ Elden Ring clout and actually make a game that isn't monetized to death on release... but I am probably going to be disappointed and end up playing it two years from now when it has a reasonably priced GOTY with all the content cut from the release edition put back in.

Can I ask what made the first game great?

Because it did so much stuff that was just plain fun.

Being able to jump onto the back of a manticore or giant ogre and crawl around on it looking for its weak spot while it's flailing around attacking your party members? Just plain fun, and it baffles me why this mechanic has never been taken up by other games.

The world is just fun to move around doing random things at your own pace. It's fun when you're playing it for the first time and everything is new, and it's still fun playing it for the 30th time when you know where everything is, because everything is just randomized enough and dangerous enough to keep you on your toes.

The day/night cycle is actually meaningful, the night is REALLY dark and can be dangerous and it's probably best to sleep through it, but you'll miss certain enemies and quests doing that.

The classes are for the most part a lot of fun, though some are really lame and some never really clicked with me. I gave up on other classes a long time ago and just play as strider because it's so great. Also the bow combat is the most fun I've ever seen in a game of this type, it's completely unrealistic and arcadey but it's so much fun.

Being able to damage enemy weak points isn't a big focus of the game, but it works really well. Other games have tried it like HZD and Monster Hunter but it never seems to work as well as it did in DD.

There are a lot of criticisms of the game but they are mostly pretty lazy or don't get the game. Does it have a lot of bargain basement MMO type quests like collect 5 macguffins from killing the macguffin lizards? Yeah, but you can either do them while doing other stuff or just completely ignore them. Does it look crappy? Kind of, but it's a ps3 game, and it has a pretty unique design scheme for a Japanese action RPG game. Is the world small? Yeah but it's a lot busier than most games of its type, and does a lot with a small map, especially in BBI.

My main complaint about the game is that without needing to grind for levels you will get insanely overpowered in the base game to the point where you can literally kill late-game bosses with one or two hits, but then you get to BBI and it instantly beats you up and you realize that you really should have grinded for levels after all.

What I like about it, and I rarely see to this day, is that it gave the player a lot of agency. You got to make your character and pawn look how you wanted, you got to engage with the class system at your own pace, you had to figure out some quests and not just go from marker to marker... it felt like a game, and for it's time and really even now it looked really nice and was fun to play.

That's the main thing, for people that crave more agency and less cut-scene heavy story fed down our throats, it's one of the rare gems out there... and that's why I'm not getting my hopes up now. They don't spend a huge amount of development time and resources on games to please a niche audience with content that might not be seen or individually purchased by every player.

Not gonna quote you, but very hard disagree that Dragon's Dogma does weak spots on enemies better than Monster Hunter. Monster Hunter is a lot better in that regard, and much less clunky.

Also saying half of the classes aren't good isn't a big compliment. I'm not a hater of the game, but half of what you said are negatives without you even realizing it sfc.

I've only played MHW which always felt like bashing the monsters with the same attack over and over again and hoping it would finally die, without any effect to body parts. DD doesn't have enough combat based around weak points, but you get enemies like manticores where you can kill the goat head to stop it using magic, or kill the snake tail to make it stop spraying poison everywhere. It makes you fight pretty creatively.

Warrior is really the only bad one because for some reason they gave it one set of three skills, instead of two sets of three like all the other classes. Fighter is just kind of meh. All the others are pretty great and appeal to different types of players.

Monster Hunter from now in 2024 or Monster Hunter in 2013 or when DD came out?

I think there's a good argument to make DD did it better at the time... and it's probably gone on to help Capcom improve MH.
