Dafuq? Does nobody remember being a kid and how often you lied and hid shit from your parents? My parents were great, but they had no idea of half the shit I got into with my friends. Now I'm not a psycho, so the shit I hid from them didn't include beating people to death. But come on, these are teenagers. There's no chance the parents had any idea what they were up to if the kids didn't want them to.

Part of being a parent is trusting that when your kids are out of your sight, they're still being good kids. It's not always true, of course. But you do at some point have to trust your kid on his own. Micromanaging and hovering over them 24/7 is just as unhealthy and damaging to a kid's growth as ignoring them entirely. The situation sucks, the teens deserve to rot in prison, but locking up their parents too doesn't do anything to help anybody.

I... I didn't lie and hide stuff from parents - at least to say I did often, though that's just my experience. What do you know about these specific parents to say them facing punishment won't "help anybody"?

Lol agreed. I think I hid so many activities from my parents that the only time I ever managed to approach them with anything was to get permission for a tattoo since I still needed them to say it was OK.

Parents should only be facing civil charges as they are the guardians, aka, the ones responsible for the awful act these teens did.

Criminal charges, though, unless there's evidence the parents had an active involvement, is just trying to throw blind revenge anywhere, without caring about the concept of justice. Awful kids can still come from great, supportive parents.

Prison, regardless if you think its purpose is for revenge or rehabilitation, is a way to make sure people can't be a danger for a period of time to the general public. I don't see how this serves that.

Luckily in Nevada 13 is the minimum age to be tried as an adult and that was the youngest of the group.

I bet they're sitting in jail laughing about it thinking they'll get a slap on the wrist.

I don't know, that's why I was asking how Aristoph concluded there wasn't anything to punish them for.

Obviously I don't know these parents or any details.. but I can definitely see things a parents does falling into "they should be punished too for their intentional negligence/active support" like other parents encouraging violence of not securing guns etc. I'm asking how Aristoph knows *these* parents haven't done anything that would fall in that category.

Society wise, we lack discipline for our kids. Social promotion in schools and an inability to hold students accountable in school as well as an unwillingness to hold them accountable by parents is what is allowing them to happen.

They all deserve life in prison, they're all old enough to know right from wrong.

They shouldn't get to life the rest of their lives free and clear when the victim doesn't get to.

The AP participation rate at Rancho High School is 45%. The total minority enrollment is 93%, and 100% of students are economically disadvantaged. Rancho High School is 1 of 73 high schools in the Clark County School District.

https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/nevada/districts/clark-county-school-district/rancho-high-school-12233

From a census
Foreign born persons, percent, 2017-2021
20.8% in La as Vegas.

I believe this is worth mentioning because being foreign born makes it harder to tell your kid how to succeed socially.

And it didn't seem to take much for these kids.

Their lawyers may try, but you can't really argue that there was some "triggering event" to set off their murderous mob behavior.

I'm glad this was said. Obviously the parents should be looked into, but I feel like people forget what being a teen was like. You can do everything right as a parent and still end up with a fuck up.

https://www.cnn.com/jonathan-lewis-beating-death-ninth-suspect-arrested/index.html

Police have arrested a ninth suspect in the beating death of a 17-year-old Las Vegas high school student, they said in a news release.
Jonathan Lewis died after being beaten when a fight broke out November 1 over stolen items near the Rancho High School campus, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police have said.
The ninth suspect was arrested and booked into the Clark County Juvenile Hall for open murder, said the news release. The suspect was not identified.
Detectives still need help identifying one outstanding person of interest in this homicide, police said. The individual was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and khaki pants.
