Second person to receive experimental pig heart transplant dies nearly six weeks after procedure

Lawrence Faucette, the second living person to receive a genetically modified pig heart in a transplant, has died six weeks after the experimental procedure. The University of Maryland Medical Center, where the experimental procedure had been performed, said the heart began to show signs of rejection in recent days.

Mr. Faucettes last wish was for us to make the most of what we have learned from our experience, so others may be guaranteed a chance for a new heart when a human organ is unavailable. He then told the team of doctors and nurses who gathered around him that he loved us. We will miss him tremendously, Dr. Bartley Griffith, clinical director of the Cardiac Xenotransplantation Program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said in a statement. Griffith had performed the experimental surgery.

Faucette, 58, was first admitted to UMMC on September 14 after experiencing symptoms of heart failure and underwent the experimental transplant six days later. His heart disease and pre-existing conditions made him ineligible for a traditional human heart transplant.

My only real hope left is to go with the pig heart, the xenotransplant, Faucette told the hospital in an internal interview several days before the surgery.

We have no expectations other than hoping for more time together, his wife, Ann Faucette, said at the time. That could be as simple as sitting on the front porch and having coffee together.

In the weeks that immediately followed the transplant, his doctors reported that he was making significant progress, including participating in physical therapy and spending time with this family.

One month after his surgery, his doctors said they believed his heart function was excellent and had withdrawn any drugs to support his heart function.

Doctors had treated Faucette with an experimental antibody treatment to further suppress the immune system and prevent rejection. However organ rejection is the most significant challenge with traditional transplants involving human organs as well, said UMMC in a statement.

In a statement regarding her husbands passing, Ann thanked those involved in her husbands care at UMMC.

Larry started this journey with an open mind and complete confidence in Dr. Griffith and his staff. He knew his time with us was short, and this was his last chance to do for others, she said.

According to the federal government, there are more than 113,000 people on the organ transplant list, including more than 3,300 people in need of a heart. The group Donate Life America says that 17 people die each day waiting for a donor organ.

In January 2022, the University of Maryland also performed the first such experimental surgery on 57-year-old David Bennett, who died two months following the surgery. While there were no signs of rejection in the initial weeks following the transplant, an autopsy concluded that Bennett ultimately died of heart failure from a complex array of factors, including Bennetts condition prior to the surgery. A case study published in the Lancet also noted there was evidence of pig virus that had not been identified previously.

Shame it didn't work for far longer.

These transplants are only given to the sickest of patients.

The first human heart recipient lived 18 days. Now there's a guy who has survived 35 years.

He wasn't particularly sick he just didn't qualify for a regular transplant. If he got one anyway, he'd have probably lasted much longer than 6 weeks. Basically his options boiled down to die now or die later and he chose later.

The sooner they iron out the kinks with pig heart transplants then the sooner the docs can move on to the real goal: baboon heart transplants! Then once we get baboob hearts we can finally reach the real medical advancement and start firing off Uber charges.

Religious bullshit tends to get in the way, but I wonder how much of that is actually tangible (politicians blocking things in exchange for funding from Christian groups) and not just the church voicing opposition (which is similarly ineffectual to the UN condemning war crimes).

Gives me hope that we'll be able to atleast semi perfect this until we can just 3d print peoples hearts.

Also, if nothing else, maybe it could be possible to keep people alive with these until a heart is found for them? (Assuming they qualify and if we don't perfect it to the point where that isn't necessary.)

Cloning would probably be more ideal, especially from stem cells, as the pigs have to be genetically spliced with human DNA to work in the first place

not much of a hero when he was ineligible for a normal heart transplant, getting a pig heart was a last resort and i'm not sure if he wouldn't have lived longer if he never had the heart transplant

The thing with people that need a transplanted heart is that it can go really fast.
My father went from being able to drive to stores and do grocery shopping to lying in a bed hooked up to an oxygen machine 24/7 and barely being able to go to the bathroom by himself in less than a month.
Im sure he had less than a week left alive when he got the call that they got a heart.

There's no need to discuss amazing stem cell technology because in America Republicans will always block it and never approve it, even though it would save many of their lives.

I think that would probably be impractical.

its progress, and considering these are people who are normally off the transplant list due to pre-existing conditions its helpful.

It's sad that he died after only 6 weeks, but this is still a huge medical feat for everyone involved.

On one hand this would be incredibly controversial. On the other we need to codify this sort of thing into law before we develop the technology rather than after. We made that mistake with AI.
