An impressive performance by Baldur's Gate 3. Even accounting for SMBW, I didn't think BG3 would keep up with TotK.

Strong start from BG3 considering trends.

BG3 starting to run away with it.

Lead change! BG3 won the board vote.

TotK with a big update to retake the lead again.

Regardless of what happens, this is a good case for a 1v1 poll tomorrow because of Mario Wonder here.

If there's no 1v1, I guess we can try to extrapolate through RE4make.

BG3 gained significantly on Pikmin during the night, so I imagine it takes the lead then and probably builds enough of a buffer to hold on for 24 hours.

Wouldn't come close to winning the 1 v 1 though. By the way, is RE4 disappointing or does GameFAQs just not respect remakes that much? FF7 Remake also did poorly despite winning its year.

Weird. I see nothing but love whenever people talk about it, but it doesn't seem to have had the same impact as the Resident Evil 2 Remake. Its user score on metacritic is also low, although that metric is dubious at best.

In general GameFAQs doesn't respect remakes. But, the RE remakes tend to have solid strength. RE2 Remake even won GotY:

This is damning more than anything else. A very well-received revival of our site's #2/#3 game could only get 56% on Ghosts of Tsushima.

I am surprised Mario Wonder is ahead of RE4 for third place here, even with a Zelda game in this poll. Pretty sure no one before today was predicting Mario Wonder to be our third strongest game of the year. If that midyear GotY poll is even somewhat reliable, then FFXVI would be ahead of Mario Wonder for third place in this poll if it didn't get snubbed.

I guess you can throw in Super Mario RPG as another snub as well.

The easiest way to avoid big name snubs is to simply increase the size of each seasonal poll to 10 games (instead of 8).

Compared to how Odyssey held up against BotW, Wonder isn't doing bad at all.

BG3 takes back the lead with a strong 5 minutes.

FF16 was screwed and it's a shame to miss SMRPGR making an appearance in yesterday's poll.

BG3 looks legit. Of course, Wonder is LFF'ing LoZ:TotK here, but BG3 is still more than doubling RE4 when FF16 wasn't close to doing that. It's a big year for games, and BG3 takes #2 to a well-received Zelda-game while taking GotY awards with lots of other places -- no shame in that.

Takes #2 unless you think Wonder beats BG3, anyway, but I'm not ready to subscribe to that.

TotK exits the Power Hour trailing by 12. The night will be long.

It's always amazing how the Power Hour really does seem to be pretty close to being exactly an hour.

Consider? 42+%. I can see BG3 getting 25+% of what's between RE4 and LFF'd Wonder with their current ~29.5% in the poll. That's enough to at least be close.

As of now, if Mario Wonder splits 75-25 in favor of TotK, BG3 still ekes out a victory. Assuming RE5 splits 50-50 for both.

With the lead at 228 right now, I'd say BG3 has today's poll in the bag. That lead is too high for TotK to overcome with these vote totals.

Still hoping for a 1v1 poll tomorrow to see what the result would be without Wonder involved.

Well XVI never would have made it because it would lose to BG3!

Also yeah Pikmin 4 is definitely this years Forgotten Land in terms of strength relative to previous entries. Actually that was a GotY poll snub wasnt it?

That's my thought too, I know FF16 wouldn't do well against Zelda or BG3 but let it compete, it's a mainline FF game. It's not like the game was trashed, it got a good MC score and sold millions of copies. I am sure FFXII was included in Game of The Year polls back in the day and that game was hated (unfortunately)

XII actually got a 92 Metascore even though the turn against it happened pretty quickly.

I was thinking and the only format where XVI makes it to the final poll is back when it was exclusives for each platform then a separate multiplatform poll. Then TotK would win the Switch poll, BG3 wins the multiplatform poll, XVI wins the Playstation poll, Hi-Fi Rush embarrasses Starfield to win the Xbox poll, Sea of Stars wins Indie and RE4 wins remakes. If its platform polls with multiplatform games, BG3 eliminates XVI, if its genre polls BG3 eliminates XVI, if its sequels/originals/remakes BG3 and TotK eliminate XVI, and with this years format or one exclusive poll and one multiplatform poll, TotK eliminates XVI.

With that said, XVI should still be in the polls as its a major release with great reviews and top 5 strongest of the year. It was never going to win or do all that well, but it should have been in the polls at least.

So how would we rank the (presumably?) 5 strongest games of the past decade? BotW, Witcher 3, Elden Ring, TotK and BG3.

You would need Ultimate in that discussion too then. I would be scared to pick some of those above FFVIIR in a standard contest setting though I would pick them all against it. Some of those games have clearly benefit from titles as Game of the Year and Game of the Decade. Ultimate clearly didn't but still had no trouble getting past what it needed to. I would expect FFVIIR to follow a similar pattern of lacking blowout power but getting the job done.

BotW is first for sure, rest gets harder.

If this is all TotK is worth then that Ganondorf boost speculation from last year is basically dead.

Also, nice to see that Baldur's Gate 3 has inherited Baldur's Gate 2's ridiculously lopsided trends.

I'd take Metroid Dread over FFVIIR before I'd take FFVIIR over any of Witcher 3, Elden Ring, Tears of the Kingdom, or Baldur's Gate 3.

TotK could also be facing the same issue as I just mentioned. These polls have a higher tendency of judging by greatest game for the industry or most game changing, stuff like that. TotK isn't all that, it's a sequel to something that was but that's not the same. Probably beats BG3 easily in a standard contest setting, gets a scare in Game of the Decade.

Yeah I would take FFVIIR over Dread but it would be a lot closer for Dread than FFVIIR would get against any of those big dogs. FFVIIR looked like a normal GotY winner not an all timer, and that about goes with the general reception. All of the rest of those are all-timers.

I wouldnt even take FFVIIR over Persona 5 at this point!
