I would stash it somewhere and never use it till the day I die, hopefully of old age. Possibly looking for a more permanent destruction/burying solution along the way.
Meanwhile, bribing my shinigami w/ apples so he's hopefully cool with an uneventful long term vacation to Earth.

Partly b/c extra judiciously killing people is wrong, but to be honest...mostly for my own survival. If one such book exists, others probably do too, and between rival death note owners and the authorities, the less conspicuous I make myself, the better. Definitely would avoid posting my face to social media and using an alias whenever possible, too.
The mere existence of such a "tool" would terrify me more than anything. I care way more about not-dying than I do about killing "people who deserve it".

EDIT: The one thing I always wondered about the DN is...if you put your own name in there (or had someone else write it in, if you can't "off yourself") and intentionally set the date of your own death so ridiculously far in the future that it'd never occur before you die of natural causes... does that effectively "immunize" you to all death notes? Since your name and time/cause of death is already technically recorded in a death note?
A scheme like that to protect myself and maybe others from less scrupulous DN owners would be my only real interest in "using" it, and I'd still probably be too afraid to test that.

Yeah. I actually think this and killing Lind L. Tailor are the biggest mistakes Light made early on.

The former could maybe be forgiven by him not having much info on criminals outside of Japan (this was the mid-2000s after all, before international news was more widely available online), but the latter was purely his own ego fucking him over.

In the live-action movies, this is basically what L did. But IIRC, at least there, you could only set your death for up to 30 days into the future.

Interesting. Lame restriction, but yeah, definitely covers what I always considered the biggest plot hole "what if?" that was never explored in the original anime.

I believe you can, you just can't extend someone's original life span. So if you said your best friend dies in their sleep at 100, but it turns out they're going to die at 60, they don't get a bonus 40 years.

That's why I like the live-action J-drama they did a few years back.

In that adaptation, Light was basically just a normal guy who was brilliant, but lazy and had to grow into the Kira role. In that, they made it more explicit that Light was corrupted by the Death Note, rather than the anime and manga where it's clear he was always a psycho.

Oh yeah, I know that. Never expected to be able to write myself a 500 year lifespan or anything.
Just to immunize myself from Death Notes by being recorded in one already.

I doubt it. For me, it's much easier to say that I could end a bunch of politicians but the consequences that actually arise would be completely different.

Dunno if I have the heart to actually do it once the power is mine. I'd like to think I'm well off enough mentally to handle that but I'm not nearly that arrogant.

Absolute power and all.

No, there's a rule stating outright that the Death Note is limited to twenty-three days. You can't go further than that. The only exception is if you write disease as the cause of death; they will live long enough for the disease to plausibly progress to a fatal stage.

You are right that you can't extend someone's natural lifespan though. That takes precedence over the Death Note.

Basically, the series goes out of its way to make sure you can't loophole your way into making it a Life Note.

Light literally murdered a guy he thought was L in the very first episode, merely for mocking him and saying he'd be caught, because he was mad.

It took a few more episodes for him to off an entire FBI team sent to investigate Kira murders, that had done nothing wrong.

Light was NEVER doing shit for a good cause. He was always an egotistical monster from the very start, and the absolute definition of "High Intelligence, Dump Stat'd Wisdom".
