Light was doing shit from his own sense of justice. The problem was his sense of justice was juvenile and warped. He didn't understand crime as anything but a manifestation of a person's malevolence. So he believes that if everyone knows that you suddenly die when you commit a crime, it will scare the bad people straight.

And since he believed in his juvenile idea of justice, investigators trying to stop him were part of a corrupt system holding back the world. Not only that, but people intellectually beneath him challenging his idea of right and wrong was a sin to him. That doesn't preclude him being an egotistical narcissist because his narcissism is a core element of his sense of justice.

I'd probably use it on evil figures like Putin or whatever.
