That bully tactic already massively backfired.

Wish 5 GOP would step forward and make a deal with the Dems. Could be Faustian, though...their terms would likely be steep.
They have no leverage though.

They shit the bed.

They look like morons.

Dems are under no pressure to assist them in wiping up their whoopsies in any way.

Exactly. They don't want to govern, they want to rule. Power and money is everything to Republicans. They need to start thinking about the people, but that'll never happen.

Front runner for Republican candidate picked up his second gag order a few days ago.

Front runner for Speaker of the House has still not conceded the election was fair and had a hand in the sexual assault and cover up of hundreds of athletes.

Im against speaker-lite, Im against Bud Light. I believe it is a constitutional desecration to not elect a Speaker of the House. We need to stay here until we elect a speaker, said Rep. Matt Gaetz. And if someone cant get the votes, we need to go onto the next person. But twisting and torturing the Constitution to empower a temporary speaker is having a speaker-lite.

At least 5 of them must know that this clown show has already cost them their career so they may as well get an opportunity to get some money & corporate favors on their way out.
It'd have to be 5 with safe R districts, I imagine, so they can suffer any backlash from "working with the Dems."

Good news is, polls already show the people clearly are blaming the GOP for this, as they should. The bad news is, this is happening in October 2023, not October 2024. The GOP never seems to suffer real punishment of r this bullshit, or shutting down the government, because of goldfish voter memories (and a healthy dose of gerrymandering).

Oh, I agree. I meant that, the Dems could broker a deal to make Jefferies speaker, which means giving up something in return. Since normal motivators like "running the government" doesn't logically stimulate the toxic Republican fucks in Congress.

I'm an ex-Republican. My wife is an ex-Republican. We know multiple ex-Republicans. Plenty have left the party or are Republicans in name only voting Dem over the direction that the party has gone.

But the problem is that way, way, way, way more have stayed or joined the GOP as a result of it being MAGAfied. The modern right wants either lower taxes for the wealthiest, restrictions to abortion, or to just troll the libs, and the MAGA GOP has checked all three boxes.

Safe R districts are filled with wannabe congresscritters. There'd be no problem finding a far right alternative in basically any safe GOP district that'd get easy Fox News boosts.

That said, close to toss-up districts means GOP voters would likely stay home on election day, allowing the Dem challenger to win, knowing the GOP candidate is a "sell out." It would feel like safe R districts would have less to risk. Anyone in a competitive district would get primaried AND be signing their own death warrant.

Suffice to say however in those districts, the fact that the clown show is happening at all is putting the career at risk as moderate people will seek to vote out incompetence. I think the odds are better if they vote Jeffries. I think most people will understand that SotH is just a functional position to keep the government open and not a declaration of political allegiance.

Well some people value having a "marketplace of ideas" even if it leads to chaos and toxicity like this.

Like if you're a Democrat and you don't like Hakeem Jeffries you're pretty much fucked since everyone else supports him. If you're a Democrat and you want an insurgent outsider candidate you're fucked because Dems go for proven unifiers instead. The Democratic party is a lot more functional but it provides less avenues for deviation.

Some of the holdouts are still refusing to talk to Jordan.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/10/19/house-speaker-vote-live/

Jordan pledged to work the holdouts so the House could elect him as speaker. Its a meeting that is unlikely to produce a result, as some of the 22 holdouts are not entering the meeting in protest, and many of those against Jordans candidacy say they wont be swayed in his favor.

They're probably setting bad precedents here. As obnoxious as the Freedom Caucus is, even they didn't just outright refuse to talk to McCarthy forever. That the moderates are just going "lolno" to talking to the frontrunner for the Speakership (even considering the fact that it's a clown like Jim Jordan) is gonna provoke similar behavior from rivals and make it literally impossible for the party to choose a Speaker.

Because they can't find anyone with more Republican votes and they don't want Jeffries. It's just the political reality. Realistically if they just go with no Speaker forever and the government shuts down, that's what MAGA wanted anyway. They at least have the opportunity to wrangle concessions out of Jordan, like MAGA did to McCarthy, and could boot him with one motion if he failed to live up to them.

But basically the traditional GOP is so afraid of losing power to any other wing of the party they'd prefer nothing happens at all. It's amusing to see clashing egos lead to the complete failure of a political party.
