Because they can't find anyone with more Republican votes and they don't want Jeffries.
So agree to vote for Pelosi. They loved it when she was Speaker because they campaigned on it.

Some of the holdouts are still refusing to talk to Jordan.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/10/19/house-speaker-vote-live/

They're probably setting bad precedents here. As obnoxious as the Freedom Caucus is, even they didn't just outright refuse to talk to McCarthy forever. That the moderates are just going "lolno" to talking to the frontrunner for the Speakership (even considering the fact that it's a clown like Jim Jordan) is gonna provoke similar behavior from rivals and make it literally impossible for the party to choose a Speaker.
This doesn't make much sense. Are you excusing the Republicans who ousted McCarthy in favor of Jordan?

Though of course, we're actively seeing otherwise at this point. Death threats are the last thing that would make someone comfortable with giving up their power. MAGA is extremely stupid, and as an extension of that Jordan/McCarthy/etc. were incredibly stupid for forcing a vote before they had the votes; they should've predicted that the alt-right would respond highly counterproductively to the holdouts. It's just bad politics all around.

They ousted McCarthy because he didn't follow the rules of the deal he agreed upon to get the votes. It's a cut and dry matter. And even Gaetz endorsed Scalise after Jordan lost the initial conference vote, so it's not like he was explictly demanding Jordan instead; he just wanted McCarthy gone.

Any future Speaker can also be voted out if they don't follow their agreements. I actually don't see any problem with the feature. Imagine if we could instantly boot dudes like Trump for lying to the people. It'd be amazing.

McCarthy made multiple conflicting promises to multiple people and this was the obvious result. Allowing one person to motion to vacate is a bad idea when you have multiple bad faith actors in the party.

Nice to see some of the vitriol the GOP has unleashed being turned back against them.

If the GOP had any decency they would realize that this sort of behavior has been directly enabled by them, it's just usually directed at the dems by GOP voters. This would of course change their behavior going forward. They aren't decent though.

Maybe Republicans, the ones who simply suck and aren't the stochastic terrorist types will actually try to do something about this cancer within the party.

The far more likely option, which many 'moderate' Republicans have taken, is to just quit and enter the private sector and make millions.

What rules did he not follow? Can I see these rules?

GOP Reps have claimed that McCarthy's deal to raise the debt ceiling violated a commitment to keeping it at 2022's level, and that he then punished GOP Reps who opposed the debt deal by not bringing their bills to the floor. The agreement's terms weren't made public so that can't be verified, but nobody's denied the claim.

While Dem. Reps say McCarthy backing out of a budget deal with Biden helped provoke their choice not to save him. So either way, the dude didn't live up to his promises.

Apparently Jordan made progress with NY Republicans, with Lee Zeldin's help, but would still not have the votes even if they backed him. Some moderates are saying the point of the meeting was to just to stress that Jordan had no path to the votes lol.

https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/house-speaker-vote-10-19-23/index.html

One attendee told CNN that the purpose of the meeting was to make it crystal clear that its over" and that Jordan should now know he has no path to become speaker.

It seems like he's doomed and they should probably find someone else to put forward. Now can these holdouts come up with anyone who won't get laughed out of the Republican conference?
