Again, if I was a swing district republican, I would be calling literally every prominent GOP ex-House member (especially if they served in higher office after like the senate, cabinet, or as a governor) to try to fish for intetested parties to come out of retirement for one year, and phrase all of that as getting a temporary guy and letting the next congress choose a more permanent speaker in 2025.

He'll likely get them at this point. Democrats don't want this to get in the way of must-pass legislation. McHenry will be there long enough to do the work that has to be done, and then they'll go right back to being obstructionists with a new guy next year.

And if someone cant get the votes, we need to go onto the next person. But twisting and torturing the Constitution to empower a temporary speaker is having a speaker-lite.

Every day this keeps happening is great. That is, until a garbage speaker is elected or we really, really need the House to function (which isn't even guaranteed when we get a new speaker). This is like a great train ride that you know is going to crash.

LOL, Gaetz is not going to let Jordan squirm out of this.

Plus, the whole thing about empowering the temporary Speaker with this type of thing just comes off weird and highly suspect constitutional wise.

Reps. Ralph Norman of South Carolina and Chip Roy of Texas, two House Republican hard-liners, told CNN today they remain opposed to a proposed resolution to empower interim Speaker Patrick McHenry.
Were supposed to choose the speaker. Its in the Constitution. Theres a Senate pro tem. Theres not a speaker pro tem, Roy told CNN.
And Georgie Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said on X: "I'm not sharing our power with democrats, after our voters gave us the majority."
But Georgia Rep. Austin Scott indicated before a House GOP Conference meeting Thursday that he could be open to empowering McHenry if a majority of the conference supports it.
I support the Hastert rule if 50% of our conference plus one wants to do that, then the conference can have that discussion, he said.

It's the new republican attempt to spin their idiocy with repeated speaker votes. There have been 17 total votes for speaker this year and Hakeem Jeffries was a losing nominee in all of them. That's to be expected, though, since Democrats are in the minority. If Democrats were in the minority, it would take 1 round of voting. They're just being intentionally obtuse.

I wish some of these Republicans would get a clue and resign, knowing they and their party as a whole fucking sucks. Jordan, lacking the votes to become speaker, is poised to pivot strategy by backing a plan to expand the power of interim Speaker Patrick McHenry for the rest of the year, a move that is already triggering a backlash from some members of his party.
Reps. Andy Ogles of Tennessee and Mark Alford of Missouri told CNN theyre firmly opposed to the idea of empowering McHenry.
Asked if it was a tense meeting, Alford said, Look, were a family, and every family has squabbles. Ive been married 34 years, and Ive had my share. But I also know its worth it on the other end when you resolve those.

Theres a lot of hurt and pain in our conference things that have happened well before I got here, and I think as we go through this process, which is painful, I think healing will occur, he said.

When asked about the mood at the GOP conference meeting over supporting the interim speaker resolution, Alford said there was a lot of pressure.
It takes a lot of pressure to create a diamond. I think thats what were trying to mine in there. If its not going to be Jim Jordan, so be it. Right now, Im behind Jim Jordan. I think a lot of people are until he withdraws his name.
Ogles said he is a big fan of Patrick McHenry but opposes the resolution that would expand his powers regardless of who the interim speaker is.
Ogles predicted that if the interim speaker resolution is voted on this afternoon, it will fail. He said quite a few Republicans spoke out against the measure at the closed-door meeting.
Ogles said he has pushed for Republicans working through weekends to elect a speaker.
When members start losing weekends, theyll come to a resolution. Theyll figure out who they can vote for," the Tennessee lawmaker said.
