The models look okay, I guess. The animations are super awkward 99% of the time, though. They get their avatar in a fake room with other avatars and stand awkwardly around together staring into the camera.

It's so weirdly soulless.

Then there's the fact that a bunch of VTubers have accounts on "other sites" that sell adult material involving their VTuber avatar.

Has the world gone insane or am I the only one who doesn't get it?

Some Vtubers are like, pretty well-known for the amount of control they have over their models and how expressive they can be with them. Others are popular for other reasons, like their personalities and stuff, and the models are just something that's there.

It isn't really that hard to understand what people like about it even if it isn't for you or admire the talent it takes to run a successful vtube account. And this of course, is the running theme of your account.

I imagine sometimes the VTuber aspect is attractive to people who want to stream but are uncomfortable showing their own face. Streams generally do better if there is a "face" to associate with the streamer and a VTuber avatar helps with that.

That's just like, your opinion man.

And parasocial relationships exist with regular streamers, so that's also no different. Again, you're drastically overcomplicating things.

That part I do get. I know why it started, that makes sense. A person wants to stream, but doesn't want to face cam for any number of reasons. Some people use a still image to represent them, some people have a VTuber avatar.

The one part I don't fully get is the audience and their obsession with the avatar itself. Fan art is cool, I think that's great, but like... the models themselves are so... weird.

Just another form of parasocial relationships, which has always been a problem. VTuber avatars are even worse with it because it's considered a "character" rather than a real person so more people ignore boundaries.

They're like...3D model CGI facsimiles of anime characters rigged to motion controls and weighted to an awkward default stance.

Like, yeah, maybe there are some that are way nicer than that, but all the ones I've seen that are "serious" VTubers are just so bizarre. It's some uncanny valley shit, like it's trying to be human but just can't quite do it.

At this point it's definitely a tech issue. I get the whole concept of a streamer who wants to embody a character, a hand-picked/designed avatar that looks exactly how they want it to look. The streamer side of things I get 100%.

I think it's just the audience fervor that I don't get. Like, how they can watch this streamer (who is just a normal human being) and treat that streamer as if they actually are their character. The parasocial stuff just gets so meta at that point, like...there's some kind of serious disconnect between fantasy and reality when it comes to hardcore VTuber fans.

I get at least 85% of the concept, but the audience craziness is what I don't get lol

Most of the time people treating them as if they're actually their character is very tongue in cheek and done with a wink and a nod. Very few people actually think these people are their characters.

If you're looking for a big(ish) none VTuber streamer to watch, I mostly watch Ray Narvaez Jr. and he doesn't really engage in any of that stuff.

He's a variety streamer that pretty much plays whatever he wants. He also does somewhat regularly play with the VTuber Chibidoki.

Very few actually think it.

It's just playing along, or having a gimmick, or accepting that whatever film star is just portraying something on screen, without actually being who they play.

It's just a fun little thing and 95% of the time they are just the person behind the screen.

I can understand being camera shy and not wanting to show yourself.

What I don't understand is why people are so stupid that they treat these avatars like they're the person they're interacting with.

Also, every single vtuber or Twitch streamer with an virtual avatar that I've seen later got invited to stream on the GamesDoneQuick channel and showed their normal self, and they looked completely normal, or even on the attractive side, presented themselves normally, and in general had no reason to afraid of being on camera. Like, I'll be able to relate to seeing another person much more easily than a weird, animated avatar, and I've never seen bullying on Twitch that would even target these people. (I've seen occasional bullying or misconduct towards women, fat people, based on their opinions, based on race, etc., but the avatar would either not hide these, or they were not in a group that would be targeted to begin with. Point being, I'm not sure what it's actually for.)
