It's just entertainment. Like any other thing, some people take it too far.

I watch VTubers but I wouldn't want to date one. Especially since my favorites are varying levels of crazy. So yeah there's some parasocial fans and even some VTubers that encourage that behavior but most people are just watching an anime character do streams, it's not that complicated.

I think the Live2D models usually look great, but it's the 3D ones that can sometimes get awkward when they're in motion.

The worst thing about them to me is the whole idol culture thing. I don't watch very many streamers, but I couldn't imagine their entire online persona being owned by a corporation, and they could just be "retired" at any moment if they don't meet some quota or have the smallest controversy. That's even worse than the Machinima shit youtubers dealt with. Sure, there are independents ones, but do people even give a crap about them?

There a bunch of popular indie ones. And the whole idol culture thing is overblown. As far as I can tell, it's mainly Hololive that has tried to emulate that, but Hololive has for the most part treated their talents very well.

Well, that's the contract. Are you aware of how much these girls get paid? Hololive pays each of their members a set salary. They also get money from merch+SCs and sorts. They're fucking loaded. But, Hololive doesn't want generic streamers. They want idols who sing and dance. It's an actual career. But, Hololive has a ton of people and of the idols how many have been fired? 2-3. All 3 where for shit that'd get you fired anywhere else. All 3 are doing well in alternate personas.

I don't get it either. I don't want to see weird anime girls "voicing" the (usually clearly male-sounding, which just makes it weirder) person playing the game; it's just a distraction on the screen from what I actually clicked on the video to see.

If you don't want to show your face on the internet, nobody's saying you have to. You're not obligated to show something else in its place. (Yes, I actually know people do this sort of thing because it actually does get them more views, for some weird reason. But for me, it'll usually just deter me from watching. I feel it detracts rather than adds to the video.)

2) The vast majority of people I hear speaking over their YT videos are male-sounding

when the vast majority of female vtubers sounds like females and the vast majority of males vtubers sound like males and there's no need to even trick the audience and the audience doesn't even care and gender doesn't matter for popularity, your claim that all female vtubers sound like males does come out as either trolling or you having a hearing problem or you not being able to tell males from females

if you don't then why you are claiming that they usually have a male voice? you would have to watch quite a number of them to form that conclusion and it only takes watching on video for youtube to recommend others similar to that one, especially if you click on more then one

It's just a weird disconnect between "nah man I don't watch vtubers at all" and "vtubers are usually male-sounding on female avatars". I feel one of these is more true to your experience and the other is obfuscating something for no good reason.

Either you watch Vtubers more than you're willing to admit, or you need to come around to the idea that what little you did happen upon are in fact a small sample size and not necessarily representative of the whole.

And even so, who cares if they're more masc-sounding on femme avatars. They could be gender nonconforming.

Maybe they think VRChat models are VTubers or something. VRChat models aren't VTubers but I do know a lot of people use female avatars with male voices. Other than the famous clip, I don't think I've seen a VTuber using a female model with a male voice.

i don't think regular streamers using anime avatars is all that weird, but the more corporate stuff with higher production values is kinda grody with how the companies are creating/managing these characters that exist solely to exploit lonely weebs and their wallets

it's extra-fucked when they have clearly childlike models or characters that are portrayed with childlike mannerisms to pull in the pedophile crowd

People thought I was weird for watching LPs so I can't really judge. It's not something i think I'll ever partake in though.
