Not just fine with him stealing, but fine with him remaining a cop.

A bit how we come back to how Canada has no free speech or free speech laws. Protest can be censored and you can be arrested for what you say.

Not really. There have been like 10 people arrested for hate speech country-wide in the last three decades, and every single one of them had it coming. Hate speech laws are applied very sparingly; the whole "muh free speech!" thing is thoroughly overblown.

"Illegal protest" is more a matter violating laws as a core element of the protest, such as blockading critical infrastructure. It's nothing to do with the content of the protest.

You only need to apply then sparingly to chill free speech. And it's not just criticism of the government that is censored or even illegal. You can even be sued in Canada for leaving a bad review because you have no protection whatsoever.

As for the blockades, certain groups are allowed to have blockades, they are allowed to leave their trash everywhere, interrupt traffic, and be a general nuisance and get away with it. And we had a very sad example of protests. When they were toppling statues, the only person arrested was the person protesting to stop the protests. Proving it's okay to do illegal things, but don't you dare protest legally and protest to protect public property, public money and funds, and prevent violence. Only violent radicals or a certain group of people are allowed to protest in Canada.

The problem is that Canada is basically too far crazy in the opposite direction.

If you could fusion dance Canada with Trump's side of America, you'd probably wind up with a fairly well-adjusted personality somewhere in the middle.

Lol what

The exact same Trump style far right conspiracy theory nonsense has thoroughly swept every corner of Canada. The federal Conservative Party leader repeatedly has spread conspiracies about the WEF, George Soros, mask/vaccine mandates, and "the Great Reset".

The current premier of Alberta believes scientists are part of a vast conspiracy to falsify data regarding climate change, and denies both that it's happening and that it's human caused. She also believes smoking is good for you and that stage 4 cancer is your own fault for not getting treatment sooner.

Show me how exactly we're too crazy "in the other direction". From where I'm sitting, it's looking like a lot of Canadians are falling for the same (almost certainly foreign funded and malevolent) moronic conspiracies that Americans have fallen for.

I disagree, Canada is still grossly right-wing... it just has a thin veneer of progressiveness.

Huh, that's weird... I'm almost certain Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a thing that exists.

In any given federal election, anywhere from 60-80% of Canada's voters vote for the Liberal Party, the NDP, or the Bloc Quebecois, all of which are further left than America's Democrats.

"Progressive" is relative, and we're not as left-wing as some parts of Europe, but overall we are still one of the more progressive nations on the planet.

Yes, freedom of expression is guaranteed by our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but theres a pretty big loophole nobody mentions. The preamble to the Charter explicitly mentions that this freedom is subject to reasonable limits.
Theres also the other part of the Charter where provincial governments can steamroll any freedom they want, provided they publicly announce that theyre doing so.
This is all very different from the US, where you just have the First Amendment.
But in Canada, it means that you can get fined or even go to jail based on something you say. Say something on Twitter that wilfully promotes hatred and you could go to jail for two years.

yes, we want more left but aren't getting them. Just being the 'most left option available' doesn't mean they're actually left

You read "A dude fabricated a bunch of evidence to deliberately damage a company's reputation and was successfully sued for defamation" and got "you can be sued for leaving a bad review" out of it? Defamation is illegal in most countries and virtually never protected by free speech laws. That's not in any way representative of the claims you're making.

Yeah this is a really weird situation. Canada is usually pretty weak in these situations. But this does seem to be shaping up differently.

Seems like a pretty clear-cut case of defamation.

Why exactly are you suggesting this is a quirk of Canadian law? Dude would have been just as liable in the US or anywhere else, considering his actions. You are not allowed to make false, defamatory statements about people or businesses and use it to harm their livelihood. If you do, you are liable for the resulting damages.

...which is literally the same in any developed country, the US included.

You cannot threaten, slander, or blackmail someone, for instance, despite the fact that those are all just speech. You cannot lie under oath or deceive someone to whom you have a duty of care. Speech everywhere is subject to "reasonable limits"; free speech isn't absolute anywhere and never has been.
