Not really. There have been like 10 people arrested for hate speech country-wide in the last three decades, and every single one of them had it coming. Hate speech laws are applied very sparingly; the whole "muh free speech!" thing is thoroughly overblown.

"Illegal protest" is more a matter violating laws as a core element of the protest, such as blockading critical infrastructure. It's nothing to do with the content of the protest.
You only need to apply then sparingly to chill free speech. And it's not just criticism of the government that is censored or even illegal. You can even be sued in Canada for leaving a bad review because you have no protection whatsoever.

As for the blockades, certain groups are allowed to have blockades, they are allowed to leave their trash everywhere, interrupt traffic, and be a general nuisance and get away with it. And we had a very sad example of protests. When they were toppling statues, the only person arrested was the person protesting to stop the protests. Proving it's okay to do illegal things, but don't you dare protest legally and protest to protect public property, public money and funds, and prevent violence. Only violent radicals or a certain group of people are allowed to protest in Canada.
